Java Edition runs on Windows, macOS and Linux only and is the original version, known for its rich modding scene, third-party server ecosystem and distinct combat mechanics. Bedrock Edition runs on Xbox, PlayStation 4/5, Nintendo Switch, Android, iOS and Windows, supports cross-play between all those platforms, and offers curated marketplace add-ons instead of traditional mods. As of 2022, Microsoft sells both editions as a single bundle for PC (currently $29.99), and both are available through Xbox Game Pass for PC. Most practical differences come down to mod support, which platforms your friends play on, and performance — Bedrock is written in C++ and generally runs more smoothly on lower-end hardware.
Diamonds generate in the lower levels of the world, with the highest concentration found around Y level -58 in Java Edition (and similarly deep in Bedrock). Strip mining — digging long horizontal tunnels at that depth — is the most reliable method. Bring plenty of iron pickaxes or better, since only iron-tier tools and above can actually mine diamond ore.
Hostile mobs spawn in darkness, so lighting up your base with torches, lanterns or other light sources is the most effective deterrent. Mobs cannot spawn on slabs placed in the lower half of a block, which makes them a handy floor choice. If you are playing on Normal or Hard difficulty, you also need to close off any openings larger than a single block that lead underground or outside.
Spend the first few minutes of daylight punching trees to collect wood, then craft a crafting table, wooden pickaxe and a basic shelter before dark — even a small dirt box with a door will keep hostile mobs out. If you have time, dig into a hill or hillside to make a quick cave shelter with a crafting table and furnace inside. Never stand still outside once night falls; mobs spawn quickly and a skeleton or zombie can overwhelm an unprepared new player.
