Minecraft Creaking & Creaking Heart Find It, Follow the Resin, Beat It

Updated October 20266 min readBy

You cannot kill the Creaking by hitting it. It is linked to a Creaking Heart hidden in a pale oak tree in the Pale Garden, and the way to deal with it is to find and break that heart. This guide covers where Creakings spawn, why they freeze when you look at them, how the resin trail leads you to the heart, and what you get for it. The mob came in with Java snapshot 24w40a (1.21.2) and stopped being experimental in 1.21.4. Bedrock got it in 1.21.50.

01What the Creaking Is

The Creaking is a tree-like monster that lives in the Pale Garden, a rare variant of the dark forest biome made of pale oaks, pale moss, eyeblossoms and hanging moss. It comes out at night, and it behaves like a Weeping Angel: it cannot move while you are looking at it, then closes in fast when you turn your back.

It becomes alert when you stare at it from within about 12 blocks. It is tied to a Creaking Heart and cannot be killed by normal means, so swinging a sword at it is the wrong approach. It does not drop items or XP either.

02How Creakings Spawn

Creakings do not spawn like normal mobs. A Creaking Heart sets them up, and the heart only works when it sits between two pale oak logs (or stripped logs, wood or stripped wood) facing the same way. At night the heart is awake and spawns a Creaking near it; in daytime it is dormant, and Creakings despawn in daylight.

Natural hearts generate hidden in the trunks of pale oaks in the Pale Garden: each pale oak trunk has about a 10% chance of hiding one. They are always completely covered by other pale oak logs, so you will not see one from outside. Saplings you grow yourself do not generate a heart.

03How to Find the Creaking Heart

You cannot see the heart from outside, so use the Creaking itself as a compass:

  1. Go to a Pale Garden at night and wait for a Creaking to show up near the trees.
  2. Hit the Creaking. Each hit does nothing to its health, but it makes its linked heart grow orange resin on the pale oak logs around it.
  3. Follow the resin to the tree with the heart. The resin collects on the connected pale oak logs and shows you which trunk it is.
  4. Dig into the trunk until you reach the glowing heart block.

04How to Beat the Creaking: Break the Heart

The reliable method is to break the heart. When the linked heart is destroyed, the Creakings it spawned die. Mechanics can change between versions, so check the Minecraft Wiki if you are on a much newer snapshot.

A few traps in older advice:

05Safe Approach, Step by Step

This is my own routine, built on the mechanics above:

  1. Bring a good axe (the heart is slow to break), food, blocks to pillar or wall yourself in, and a way to see in the dark.
  2. Come at dusk, spot one Creaking and keep it in view. Hit it once to start the resin trail, then trace the trail with the Creaking still in sight.
  3. Break into the trunk, protect your back with blocks, and break the heart as soon as you reach it.
  4. If a Creaking gets close while you work, turn and look at it. It freezes, and you can finish the job.

06What You Get From a Creaking Heart

Mining a heart without Silk Touch drops 1-3 resin clumps, and Fortune raises the maximum by one clump per level, up to 6 with Fortune III. Nine clumps craft into a block of resin, and clumps also smelt directly into resin bricks, which make a whole brick family of slabs, stairs, walls and chiseled variants. With Silk Touch you get the heart itself, which can be placed between pale oak logs elsewhere to make your own Creaking source, for example for resin.

Hitting a Creaking at night also makes its heart grow more resin on nearby pale oak, so a heart you leave alone can be turned into a repeatable resin supply.

FAQ

How do you kill the Creaking in Minecraft?

You do not kill it directly. Find and break the Creaking Heart it is linked to; when the heart is destroyed, the Creakings it spawned die.

How do you find the Creaking Heart?

Go to a Pale Garden at night, hit a Creaking to make orange resin appear on the pale oak logs around its heart, then follow the resin to the trunk and dig in.

Why does the Creaking freeze?

It cannot move while a Survival or Adventure player is looking at it. When you look away it moves quickly.

Does a carved pumpkin stop the Creaking from freezing?

No. Wearing a carved pumpkin lets Creakings within your first-person view keep moving. Old snapshot advice is out of date.

Where do Creakings spawn?

Only in the Pale Garden, near a Creaking Heart hidden in a pale oak tree, and at night.

What does a Creaking Heart drop?

1-3 resin clumps without Silk Touch (up to 6 with Fortune III), or the heart block itself with Silk Touch.

Which version added the Creaking?

Java Edition snapshot 24w40a (1.21.2), non-experimental since 1.21.4. Bedrock Edition received it in 1.21.50.
