Ancient City & Warden — Survive the Deep Dark
The Ancient City is Minecraft's most dangerous loot destination — a colossal deepslate ruin buried at Y=-51 in the Deep Dark biome, guarded by sculk shriekers and the Warden, a blind titan with 250 hearts that can kill a fully-armored Netherite player in two hits. The good news: you never have to fight it. This guide covers how to find the city, how the sculk warning system works, how to sneak and loot safely, which items to prioritize, and what to do when things go wrong.
01What Is the Deep Dark and the Ancient City?
The Deep Dark is a cave biome that generates deep underground, almost always below Y=0. Its floors and walls are blanketed in sculk — a dark block with glowing blue veins that reacts to nearby vibrations. Unlike every other cave biome, the Deep Dark has no ambient mob spawning at all. The only hostile mob here is the Warden, and it only appears when you trigger it.
Nestled inside most Deep Dark biomes is an Ancient City — a sprawling structure of deepslate bricks, chiseled deepslate and gray wool corridors stretching roughly 220 blocks across, centered at Y=-51. It was introduced in Java Edition 1.19 and Bedrock 1.19.0 as part of The Wild Update (June 2022).
The centerpiece of every Ancient City is a portal-like frame of reinforced deepslate — the rarest block in the game and unobtainable in Survival mode. Beneath that frame is a hidden basement with naturally-generated redstone circuitry. The rest of the city is a maze of ruined towers, corridors and staircases riddled with sculk sensors, sculk shriekers and roughly 24–27 loot chests.
02How to Find an Ancient City
Ancient Cities generate exclusively in the Deep Dark biome, which itself appears only in very deep cave systems — typically beneath mountain ranges or terrain with low erosion values. There are no surface markers whatsoever; you cannot see, hear or detect the city from above.
- /locate structure ancient_city — the fastest method in any world with cheats or in Creative mode. Returns exact coordinates; then use /tp or dig straight down.
- Deep cave exploration at Y=-51 — while spelunking in the deepslate layer, watch for sculk-covered floors. The city's gray wool corridors and deepslate brick towers stand out sharply against natural stone once you find the edge. Ancient Cities tend to generate under mountains, so biomes like Jagged Peaks and Frozen Peaks are good starting points.
- Third-party seed maps (Chunkbase) — paste your world seed into the Ancient City finder and every city in your world is marked on a zoomable map. No in-world cheats required.
- F3 debug screen (Java) — watch the biome readout as you descend. When it reads
minecraft:deep_dark, you are in the right biome. Explore horizontally to find the city structure.
03The Warning System — Sculk Sensors and Shriekers
The sculk network is what makes the Ancient City genuinely dangerous. Understanding it precisely is the difference between looting safely and triggering a Warden.
Sculk Sensors detect vibrations within an 8-block radius. They react to almost any player action: footsteps, jumping, placing or breaking blocks, opening containers, projectile impacts, and splashing in water. When triggered, they send a Redstone signal and alert nearby Sculk Shriekers.
Sculk Shriekers are the real threat. Each activation raises your personal warning level by one:
- Level 1 — eerie audio cue ('warden approaches'); nothing happens yet.
- Level 2 — louder shriek ('warden advances').
- Level 3 — even louder ('warden draws close'); this is your final warning.
- Level 4 — a Warden emerges from the ground within 24 blocks of your position.
Your warning level drops by 1 every 10 real-world minutes without triggering a shrieker. A spawned Warden also despawns after 60 seconds without detecting any vibrations, which resets the local danger. One important nuance: only naturally-generated sculk shriekers (those tagged can_summon:true) spawn Wardens. Shriekers you craft or place yourself do not.
Ancient Cities have a much higher density of shriekers than the surrounding Deep Dark biome — this is intentional. Clearing shriekers proactively before looting is often the safest approach.
04Meet the Warden — Stats, Attacks and Behavior
If a Warden does spawn, knowing its mechanics is the only thing standing between you and a respawn screen.
Health: 500 HP (250 hearts) — more than the Ender Dragon and Wither individually. Do not try to kill it unless you have a compelling reason.
It has two attacks:
- Melee attack: 16 HP on Easy, 30 HP on Normal, 45 HP on Hard (22.5 hearts). Full Netherite armor with Protection IV dies in two hits on Hard. Melee also disables your shield for 5 seconds, so shields offer no protection.
- Sonic boom: Charges for 1.7 seconds, then fires a burst dealing 6 / 10 / 15 HP on Easy / Normal / Hard. The sonic boom passes through all blocks, bypasses armor and enchantments, and even ignores shields. Only the Resistance status effect reduces this damage. Its vertical range is approximately 30 blocks — pillaring up does not save you from it.
Additionally, the Warden pulses the Darkness effect every 6 seconds, affecting all players within a 20-block radius for 13 seconds each pulse. Darkness drastically reduces your visible range, making navigation and escape much harder.
The Warden is completely blind. It uses two detection methods:
- Vibration sensing (15-block radius): Reacts to any sound — footsteps (if not crouching), block interactions, projectiles. Crouching eliminates footstep noise completely.
- Sniffing (6 blocks horizontal, 20 blocks vertical): Periodically sniffs the air to locate players by scent regardless of noise level. Holding still very close to a Warden will eventually get you detected even if you are silent.
The Warden's aggression operates on an anger scale of 0–150. It roars and charges at anger 80. Anger decays at 1 per second when it cannot detect you. After 60 seconds of detecting nothing, the Warden burrows back underground and despawns.
What the Warden drops: One sculk catalyst and 5 XP. Nothing from the Ancient City's loot pool. This is why fighting it is almost never the right call — you risk everything and gain almost nothing.
05Sneaking Through Safely — The Wool Trick and Core Rules
The Ancient City is a stealth challenge, not a combat one. Every safety rule flows from one fact: sculk sensors cannot detect sneaking players' footsteps.
- Crouch constantly. Hold Shift from the moment you enter the Deep Dark until you leave. Sneaking suppresses all footstep vibrations — sensors ignore you as you move. This is the single most important rule. You can move diagonally while crouching (press two direction keys) to reach roughly 1.8 m/s instead of the standard 1.3 m/s.
- Bring wool — a lot of it. Wool blocks and wool carpets completely absorb vibrations. Place wool between yourself and any sculk sensor before opening a nearby chest, breaking a shrieker, or doing anything else that makes noise. The sensor cannot detect what happens on the other side of a wool block. A stack or two is a minimum; bring more.
- Prioritize destroying shriekers. Before looting an area, identify all shriekers and break them with a hoe (fastest tool for sculk blocks). Place wool between you and any nearby sensor first. Without shriekers, sensors are completely harmless — they emit a Redstone signal to nothing. Clear shriekers first, then loot freely.
- No projectiles near sensors. Projectile impacts trigger sensors. However, you can use this deliberately: throw a snowball or egg at a spot 5+ blocks from the Warden to distract it — the Warden investigates the impact, giving you time to reposition. Keep distraction throws at least 5 seconds apart.
- Use Night Vision potions, not torches. In Java Edition, placing a torch near a sculk sensor triggers it. Carry Night Vision potions to see clearly without generating light-source vibrations.
06Loot Priorities — What to Grab First
An Ancient City holds roughly 24–27 chests scattered across its towers, side corridors and central structure. The outer-path chests are the safest targets — fewer shriekers and more escape room. Work inward only after you have cleared the perimeter shriekers.
- Echo Shards (found in about 30% of chests, 1–3 per chest): The most strategically important drop. Collect 8 Echo Shards and combine them with a regular Compass in a crafting grid (Shards fill the 8 surrounding slots, Compass in the center) to craft a Recovery Compass. This compass points to where you last died — essential for recovering lost gear after a Warden encounter. Echo Shards are exclusive to Ancient Cities.
- Swift Sneak enchanted books (exclusive to Ancient Cities): Swift Sneak increases movement speed while crouching. At Level III, sneaking becomes nearly as fast as walking — this transforms the Ancient City from a tedious crawl into a workable dungeon and makes every other sneaking situation in the game far more comfortable. It can only be applied to leggings and is unavailable from enchanting tables or librarian trades.
- Disc Fragments (~30% of chests, 1–3 per chest): Collect 9 Disc Fragments and arrange them in a 3×3 crafting grid to assemble Music Disc "5" — one of the rarest and most unsettling music discs in the game. Disc fragments are exclusive to Ancient Cities.
- Ward and Silence Armor Trims: The rarest cosmetic drops in the city. Both trims are unique to the Ancient City and used at a Smithing Table to apply patterns to your armor. Silence trim in particular is among the hardest cosmetics to obtain in the whole game.
- Enchanted Golden Apples: Standard but always valuable — found occasionally alongside enchanted books and other useful gear.
07Emergency Protocol — When the Warden Spawns
Even with perfect preparation, mistakes happen. Here is what to do when you hear the ground cracking open:
- During the 7-second emergence animation, sprint away. The Warden is still underground and cannot attack. Use every second to create distance. Sprint in a straight line toward the city's edge or a prepared escape route.
- Once it is above ground, sneak immediately. Stop generating vibrations. If you can reach 40+ blocks of distance without making noise, the Warden will gradually lose interest as its anger decays (1 per second). Hold still and wait.
- If it starts sniffing: It is about to locate you by smell even through your silence. Quietly reposition to increase distance, or throw a distraction (snowball, egg) at least 5 blocks away from the Warden — not closer, or it just aggros harder on you.
- Do not rely solely on pillaring up. The Warden cannot melee you above 5 blocks, but its sonic boom carries 30 blocks vertically and bypasses walls. Pillaring buys a brief window but not safety.
- Death is not final. Your items stay on the ground for 5 minutes. After 60 seconds without detecting anything, the Warden despawns. Wait out the despawn timer from a safe distance, sneak back in, and recover your gear. A Recovery Compass makes finding your death point trivial.
The single most important prep habit: before you enter any new area of the city, plan your escape route. Know which direction leads to an open cave where you can run. The Warden is fastest in narrow corridors — open space is your friend.
FAQ
How do I find an Ancient City in Minecraft without cheats?
Ancient Cities generate exclusively in the Deep Dark biome at around Y=-51, usually under mountain ranges. In survival without cheats, the most reliable approach is deep cave exploration: descend into the deepslate layer and watch for sculk-covered floors — when your F3 screen (Java) shows the biome as 'deep_dark', explore horizontally until you see the city's gray wool corridors and deepslate brick towers. You can also use a third-party seed map like Chunkbase — paste your world seed and it marks every Ancient City without requiring any in-game cheats.
How do I stop the Warden from spawning?
The Warden spawns only after you trigger 4 naturally-generated sculk shriekers within 10 minutes. To prevent this: crouch constantly so sensors ignore your footsteps, place wool between yourself and sensors before performing any noisy action near them, and destroy shriekers proactively with a hoe before looting each area. Warning levels also decay by 1 every 10 minutes — stepping back for a while between sections of the city lets the timer tick down.
What is Swift Sneak and why is it so valuable?
Swift Sneak is a leggings enchantment found exclusively in Ancient City chests that increases your movement speed while crouching. At Level III, sneaking speed is dramatically faster — making both Ancient City runs and other stealth situations much more practical. It cannot be found at an enchanting table, from villagers, or anywhere else in the game. If you enter an Ancient City for just one reason, finding a Swift Sneak III book is the best one.
Do I need to fight the Warden to get the Ancient City loot?
No — and fighting it is almost always a mistake. The Warden has 250 hearts, hits for up to 22.5 hearts per swing on Hard mode even through Netherite armor, and its sonic boom bypasses all armor and shields. It drops only a sculk catalyst and 5 XP — none of the city's exclusive loot. The entire intended gameplay is to sneak past it, loot the chests, and leave. Every resource you spend fighting the Warden is a resource you could have used for the actual loot run.
What are Echo Shards used for in Minecraft?
Echo Shards are an Ancient City exclusive used to craft a Recovery Compass. Place 8 Echo Shards in the surrounding 8 slots of a crafting grid with a regular Compass in the center — the result is a Recovery Compass that points toward the location where you last died. This makes recovering dropped items after a Warden encounter far easier, since you only have 5 minutes before items despawn. The Recovery Compass only works in the same dimension where you died.
What does the wool trick actually do in the Deep Dark?
Wool blocks and wool carpets completely absorb vibrations — no sound passes through them to a sculk sensor. If you place a wool block between yourself and a sculk sensor, you can open chests, break blocks or make noise right next to the sensor and it will not detect a thing. Walking on wool carpet while crouching generates zero vibrations. Bringing multiple stacks of wool to the Ancient City lets you create quiet safe zones around sensors before you loot nearby chests or destroy shriekers.
