Trial Chambers & The Mace — Complete 1.21 Guide
Trial Chambers are the combat dungeon added in Minecraft 1.21 (Tricky Trials) — a sprawling underground arena of tuff and copper, packed with wave-spawning enemies and loot locked behind Trial Keys. Clear them on Normal difficulty and you walk away with useful gear; trigger Ominous mode and you can claim the Heavy Core, the only ingredient needed to craft the Mace, the most powerful melee weapon in the game.
01What Are Trial Chambers (and Why Bother)?
Trial Chambers are procedurally generated underground structures built from tuff, copper blocks and chiseled tuff. Each chamber is a network of combat rooms, corridors, and decorated halls sitting between Y=-40 and Y=-20 in any Overworld biome — except the Deep Dark. They were introduced in Java 1.21 and Bedrock 1.21.0 on June 13, 2024.
Why bother? Three reasons: unique loot (armor trims, enchanted books, rare materials), the Heavy Core (exclusive to Ominous Vaults — the only way to craft the Mace), and the Breeze Rod dropped by the Breeze mob (also needed for the Mace and for crafting Wind Charges).
Each chamber is unique — the rooms are picked and assembled from a pool of templates, so no two Trial Chambers look identical.
02How to Find a Trial Chamber
Trial Chambers leave no surface signs — there are no ruins, sinkholes or unusual terrain above them. Your options are:
- /locate structure trial_chambers — the fastest method in creative or a world with cheats enabled. Run the command and it returns coordinates; then /tp or dig straight down from above.
- Cave and deep-slate exploration — chambers sit in the deep-slate layer (Y=-40 to Y=-20). While caving at that depth, listen for the crackling hum of Trial Spawners and watch for the distinctive orange-brown tuff brick walls that stand out against natural stone.
- Third-party seed maps (e.g. Chunkbase) — paste your world seed and the map marks every Trial Chamber. Useful in survival when you do not want cheats.
Chambers follow a roughly 34×34 chunk grid pattern, so in any reasonably large world there will be several within a few thousand blocks of spawn. They only generate in chunks created on 1.21 or later — older pre-1.21 terrain will not have them.
03Trial Spawners — How They Work
The heart of each room is a Trial Spawner — a lantern-like block that activates the moment a player enters the room. Unlike normal spawners it scales with player count:
- Solo: spawns up to 6 mobs total per wave, with a maximum of 2 alive at the same time.
- Each additional player in the room raises both limits — more players means harder but also more rewarding waves.
- Once all mobs in a wave are defeated, the spawner ejects a Trial Key and goes into a cooldown. It will not activate again for the same player — each spawner gives its key only once per player per world.
Spawner types vary by room: melee spawners (zombies, spiders), ranged spawners (skeletons, strays), small melee spawners (slimes, silverfish), and Breeze spawners (marked by chiseled tuff surrounding them). The Breeze spawner is the most dangerous and most rewarding.
Use the Trial Keys you earn to open the Vault — a chest-like block in the room that dispenses loot. Each Vault can be opened once per player, making it worth running chambers in a group.
04Ominous Mode — Harder Runs, Better Loot
Normal Trial Chambers give good loot. Ominous Trial Chambers give great loot — including the Heavy Core needed for the Mace.
To trigger Ominous mode, enter a Trial Chamber while you have the Bad Omen effect. Bad Omen is applied when you drink an Ominous Bottle (found in Vaults) or when you kill a raid captain in a Pillager outpost patrol while already carrying the effect. The moment you step into a chamber with Bad Omen active, it converts into the Trial Omen effect and all Trial Spawners in the structure flip to their Ominous variants.
- Ominous Trial Spawners hurl additional projectiles at you mid-fight — potions, arrows of slowness, and other nasties — on top of the normal mob waves.
- Ominous Vaults appear alongside normal Vaults and require a special Ominous Trial Key to open. Ominous Keys drop from Ominous Spawners the same way normal Keys drop from normal Spawners.
- The Ominous Vault loot pool includes Heavy Core (7.5% chance), Ominous armor trims, enchanted golden apples, high-level enchanted books, and more.
Because the Heavy Core has only a 7.5% drop rate, expect to clear multiple Ominous runs before one appears. Having Looting on your weapon does not affect Vault drops — only the number of ominous runs does.
05Surviving the Breeze
The Breeze is a floating wind elemental exclusive to Trial Chambers and easily the most dangerous mob you will face there. It has 30 HP (15 hearts) and fights very differently from anything else in the game:
- Wind charges: Its ranged attack fires projectiles that deal 1–1.5 HP and knock you back hard — they also open doors and activate buttons on impact, making rooms unpredictable.
- Leaping: The Breeze jumps constantly — up to 15 blocks horizontally and 5 blocks vertically — making it hard to pin down with melee attacks.
- Projectile immunity: Arrows, tridents and most ranged attacks are deflected back at you. Only wind charges (and your melee weapon) work on it.
- Fall damage immunity: No fall-damage cheese.
The best strategy is to close the gap with melee and stay aggressive — the Breeze cannot fire at point-blank range as effectively. A shield blocks the wind-charge knockback. Kill it with a sword or axe; save the Mace for after you have one. Each Breeze drops 1–2 Breeze Rods (up to 4–8 with Looting III).
06Crafting the Mace
Once you have a Heavy Core from an Ominous Vault and at least one Breeze Rod from a killed Breeze, the Mace recipe is simple — no Smithing Table needed, just a regular crafting grid:
- Open any crafting grid (2×2 in your inventory or a crafting table).
- Place the Heavy Core in the middle slot of the top row.
- Place the Breeze Rod directly below it in the center slot.
- Collect the Mace.
The Mace has a base attack of 6 HP (3 hearts) on a normal swing — slower than a sword (0.6 attacks/second vs 1.6). Its power comes entirely from the smash attack.
07Mastering the Smash Attack
The Mace's defining ability triggers automatically whenever you land a hit while falling at least 1.5 blocks. The bonus damage stacks with fall distance:
- +4 HP per block for each of the first 3 blocks fallen
- +2 HP per block for the next 5 blocks fallen
- +1 HP per block for every additional block after that
A smash attack also cancels all of your fall damage and resets your vertical momentum, so you land safely no matter how far you fell. The practical combo is: jump or get launched upward → fall onto the enemy → massive burst damage.
The Mace takes three exclusive enchantments that all interact with the smash:
- Density (max V): adds +0.5 HP of bonus damage per block fallen per level — at Density V you get +2.5 HP extra per block, dramatically inflating smash damage.
- Breach (max IV): reduces the target's armor effectiveness by 15% per level — at Breach IV the target's armor is reduced by 60%, letting the Mace punch through heavily armored enemies.
- Wind Burst (max III): after a successful smash, launches you upward by 8 blocks per level. Wind Burst III flings you 24 blocks into the air, letting you chain smash after smash without touching the ground.
A fully enchanted Mace with Density V, Breach IV and Wind Burst III can one-shot most mobs in the game from sufficient height, and chains of smashes delete even the Wither and the Ender Dragon quickly.
08Tips for a Safe Chamber Run
Trial Chambers are not forgiving at low gear levels. Go in prepared:
- Bring a shield. A shield blocks wind-charge knockback from the Breeze and projectiles from Ominous Spawners. This is the single most impactful item.
- Enchant your armor. Protection IV on each piece makes the difference between surviving an ambush and dying to it.
- Bring golden apples or Regeneration potions — the wave format means you cannot rest between encounters as easily as in other dungeons.
- Watch the floor. Chambers contain pressure-plate traps that trigger arrows, dispensers and other hazards. Step carefully in new rooms.
- Clear rooms methodically. Finish one room completely (claim the Vault key) before moving on — Trial Spawners that are still active can catch you from behind.
- Bring a Looting III sword for the Breeze rooms specifically — it triples the Breeze Rod yield and speeds up getting Mace materials.
- For Ominous runs: drink your Ominous Bottle just before entering, not inside. Once you are in, all spawners flip — you want to be ready before the first wave activates.
FAQ
How do I find a Trial Chamber in survival without cheats?
The most reliable method in survival is deep-slate caving at Y=-40 to Y=-20 while listening for the humming of Trial Spawners and watching for tuff-brick walls that stand out from natural stone. You can also use a third-party seed map like Chunkbase — paste your world seed and it marks every Trial Chamber. If your world allows cheats, /locate structure trial_chambers returns coordinates instantly.
What is the Ominous Trial and how do I start it?
The Ominous Trial is a harder version of a Trial Chamber that gives access to Ominous Vaults — the only source of Heavy Core. To start it, enter a Trial Chamber while you have the Bad Omen effect. Drink an Ominous Bottle (found in normal Vaults) or kill a Pillager raid captain to get Bad Omen, then walk into any Trial Chamber. All Trial Spawners in the structure will become Ominous and the run begins.
How do I get a Heavy Core?
Heavy Core only drops from Ominous Vaults at a 7.5% chance. To open an Ominous Vault you need an Ominous Trial Key, which drops from Ominous Trial Spawners the same way normal Trial Keys drop from normal Spawners. Run the chamber on Ominous mode, defeat the waves, collect the Ominous Key, then open the Ominous Vault and hope the 7.5% lands. Expect to run several chambers before one appears.
How do I craft the Mace?
Place one Heavy Core in the top-center slot of any crafting grid and one Breeze Rod directly below it in the center slot. No Smithing Table is needed. The Heavy Core comes from Ominous Vaults in Trial Chambers; the Breeze Rod is dropped by the Breeze mob (1–2 rods per kill, up to 4–8 with Looting III).
What are the best enchantments for the Mace?
The Mace has three exclusive enchantments: Density (max V) adds extra damage per block fallen per level, making smash attacks hit much harder; Breach (max IV) reduces target armor effectiveness by 15% per level, letting the Mace bypass heavily armored foes; and Wind Burst (max III) launches you 8 blocks upward per level after a successful smash, letting you chain repeated smash attacks in the air without touching the ground.
