How to Summon and Defeat the Wither in Minecraft

The Wither is Minecraft's most explosive optional boss — and the only source of the Nether Star needed to craft a beacon. Summoning it safely and surviving both phases requires preparation, the right gear, and a clear understanding of how the fight changes between Java and Bedrock Edition. This guide covers everything from skull farming to the final blow.

01Collecting Wither Skeleton Skulls

Wither Skeleton Skulls are the hardest resource to gather. Wither Skeletons spawn exclusively inside Nether Fortresses and have a base drop rate of only 2.5% per kill — meaning you will kill dozens before you have three skulls. Plan for a long farming session.

The single most effective way to speed this up is the Looting enchantment on your sword. In Java Edition, Looting III raises the drop chance to 5.5%. In Bedrock Edition the bonus is larger: Looting III brings the chance to 8.5%. There is also a guaranteed shortcut — if a Charged Creeper kills a Wither Skeleton, a skull always drops. This is situational but worth knowing.

Tips for efficient skull farming:

• Sword with Looting III — equip it before every kill, even if you normally use an axe.
• Fire Aspect II — adds burning damage but does not interfere with skull drops, so it is safe to combine with Looting.
• Light up the fortress — place torches throughout to stop other mobs from occupying Wither Skeleton spawn spots, which increases Wither Skeleton density.
• Block off side passages — funneling skeletons into a single corridor makes kills faster and safer.
• A Smite V weapon is a solid choice since all Nether fortress mobs are undead.

02How to Summon the Wither

The Wither is summoned with a specific structure built from 4 blocks of Soul Sand or Soul Soil and 3 Wither Skeleton Skulls. The two materials are fully interchangeable — you can mix and match.

Build the T-shaped structure like this:

1. Place 3 Soul Sand/Soil blocks in a horizontal row at waist height.
2. Place a 4th Soul Sand/Soil block directly below the center block of that row to form the base of the T.
3. Place one Wither Skeleton Skull on top of each of the three horizontal blocks. The Wither spawns the moment the third skull is placed.
4. The space on both sides of the base block must be air (or non-solid blocks). Solid blocks flanking the base prevent spawning entirely.

Where you summon matters enormously. The Wither creates a massive explosion at the start of the fight and will destroy surrounding terrain. Never summon it near your base, your storage, or anything you want to keep. Choose your arena deliberately before placing that third skull — once placed, you cannot cancel the spawn.

03Gear and Enchantments to Bring

The Wither hits hard, inflicts the Wither effect (a damage-over-time that turns your health bar black), and in Bedrock Edition becomes dramatically more dangerous in its second phase. Go in properly equipped or you will die quickly.

Recommended loadout:

• Netherite armor with Protection IV on every piece — the single biggest damage reduction you can get.
• Netherite sword with Sharpness V (or Smite V — the Wither is undead, so Smite deals more damage per hit).
• Bow with Power V, Infinity, and Punch II — useful for the first phase before the Wither gains armor.
• Golden Apples or Enchanted Golden Apples — the Absorption hearts absorb Wither effect damage, making them critical for sustain.
• Milk Buckets (2-3) — drinking milk removes the Wither status effect instantly. Time this carefully since it also removes other active potion effects.
• Strength II potions — dramatically increases melee damage output, shortening the fight.
• Regeneration II potions — helps offset the Wither effect between milk uses.
• Full hunger bar before the fight — natural regeneration only works at full hunger, and you need it.

04Phase One and Phase Two: What to Expect

Phase One begins the moment the Wither finishes charging (about 10 seconds after summoning — the health bar appears and it explodes). During this phase the Wither flies freely, fires explosive Wither Skulls in three directions, and can be damaged by both melee and ranged attacks. Use your bow here to deal damage from distance.

Phase Two starts when the Wither drops to 50% health. At this point it gains Wither Armor — a shield that makes it completely immune to arrows and thrown tridents. From this point onward, every hit must be melee. The Wither also regenerates health faster in this phase, so sustained sword pressure is essential.

Java Edition and Bedrock Edition diverge significantly at Phase Two:

• Java Edition: The Wither stays airborne but tracks the player more aggressively. Wither Armor blocks projectiles. Melee only from here — get close and swing.
• Bedrock Edition: At half health the Wither crashes into the ground with a massive explosion, spawns 3 Wither Skeletons (on Normal/Hard), gains Wither Armor, and then repeatedly dashes through terrain destroying blocks in its path. Its blue skulls can destroy obsidian, removing the standard Java defense of hiding behind it. The Bedrock Wither also has up to 600 health on Hard difficulty (vs. 300 in Java regardless of difficulty), making it far more demanding.

05Best Strategies for Each Edition

The optimal strategy differs significantly between editions. Choose the right approach before you summon.

Java Edition — Bedrock Ceiling Method: This is the easiest reliable strategy. In the Nether, the bedrock ceiling at Y=127 has natural gaps. Find a 3×3 bedrock field with an air pocket above the center block. Go two blocks below and place an obsidian block. Build the Wither T-structure sideways so the Wither spawns with its heads pressed into the bedrock ceiling. It becomes stuck and cannot fly, while you freely attack from below with a sword. No potions required, though Golden Apples and Strength II still speed things up considerably.

Java Edition — Enclosed Room Method: Build a small room (around 5×5×3) underground, ideally from obsidian. Summon the Wither inside. The tight space prevents it from flying away and keeps it within melee range. Keep your back to a wall and focus on sustained sword damage through Phase Two.

Bedrock Edition: The bedrock ceiling trick does not work in Bedrock due to the Wither's dash behavior. Instead, summon the Wither in a deep obsidian box underground — but remember blue skulls can crack obsidian, so the room needs to be large enough that misses do not destroy the walls near you. Bring a full potion kit: Strength II, Regeneration II, and multiple milk buckets. Enchanted Golden Apples are highly recommended on Hard difficulty. Kill the 3 spawned Wither Skeletons quickly at Phase Two before refocusing on the boss. Some players summon it in the End dimension, where the open terrain makes it easier to keep moving.

06The Nether Star and Your Beacon

Defeating the Wither always drops exactly one Nether Star, along with 50 experience points. The Nether Star is the only ingredient that cannot be crafted or obtained any other way — it exists solely as a boss reward.

Craft a Beacon using: 1 Nether Star + 5 Glass blocks + 3 Obsidian (arranged with glass on top, Nether Star in the middle row center, obsidian on the bottom). Place the beacon on a pyramid built from iron, gold, emerald, diamond, or netherite blocks. The mineral type is cosmetic — any combination works. Pyramid tier (1–4 layers) determines the beacon's effect range and which secondary powers unlock. A full 4-layer pyramid grants effects out to 50 blocks in every direction and unlocks secondary effects like Regeneration.

Common beacon setups for progression:

• Haste II — drastically speeds up mining, the most popular single-effect choice.
• Speed II — useful for large bases where you cover a lot of ground.
• Strength II — ideal near a combat or mob farm area.
• Regeneration (secondary) — available only on a full 4-layer pyramid, pairs with any primary effect.
