How to Beat the Ender Dragon in Minecraft

Updated September 20269 min readBy

The Ender Dragon is Minecraft's final boss — a 200-HP behemoth that circles the obsidian pillars of The End while ten healing crystals keep topping her back up. To win, you need to destroy all the crystals first, then hammer the dragon during her perch on the central portal. Do that, and you'll pocket 12,000 XP, a dragon egg, and access to the outer End islands and Elytra.

Quick answer

The Ender Dragon has 200 HP and is healed by ten End Crystals on the obsidian pillars around the exit portal — destroy every crystal first (two are caged in iron bars) or you'll never out-damage her regen. Once the crystals are down, shoot her head while she circles, then switch to a sword during her perch phase when she ignores arrows. A first kill awards 12,000 XP and drops a dragon egg; re-summoning her with four fresh End Crystals only awards 500 XP per repeat kill.

01Find the Stronghold and Activate the End Portal

Before you can reach the Ender Dragon, you need to locate a Stronghold hidden deep underground and activate its End portal. The tool for the job is the Eye of Ender: craft one by combining an Ender Pearl with Blaze Powder in any crafting grid. Gather at least 12 Eyes of Ender — up to 12 are needed to fill the portal frame, and you'll use extras for navigation, since some are lost when they shatter mid-flight.

To navigate to the Stronghold, throw an Eye of Ender. It floats in the direction of the nearest Stronghold, leaving a trail of purple particles, then either floats back down for you to pick up or shatters. Keep throwing and following until the eyes start dropping straight down — that means the Stronghold is directly below you. Dig down and explore its corridors until you find the End portal room.

02Gear Up Before You Jump In

The End offers no natural resources and puts you among a large population of Endermen. Going in under-equipped is a fast way to lose your best gear.

If you don't have Infinity yet, carry at least two stacks of arrows. A Flame enchantment on the bow is optional but does set the dragon on fire during strafing runs for a small bonus.

03Destroy All Ten End Crystals First

This is the most important step of the whole fight. Ten End Crystals sit on the obsidian pillars surrounding the central island, and while any of them survive, they beam light at the dragon and heal her at a rate of 1 HP every half-second. Fighting the dragon with multiple crystals still active is a losing battle — she heals faster than most players can damage her.

Hitting or shooting a crystal destroys it instantly in an explosion, so stand well clear before it pops. Most of the ten crystals sit exposed at the top of their pillars and can be sniped from the ground with a single arrow. Two of them are encased in iron bars and need to be exposed first — pillar up or throw an Ender Pearl onto the platform, then break the bars with your pickaxe before hitting the crystal. TNT works too: placed on the cage and ignited, it destroys the bars and crystal together, though the blast radius is large.

One extra detail worth planning around: destroying a crystal while it's actively beaming health into the dragon deals an extra 10 HP of damage to her on top of the explosion. Save one of the exposed crystals for a moment when the dragon is perched and actively healing from it, if you can.

Watch out for Endermen — the central island is packed with them, and stray eye contact triggers aggression. A carved pumpkin on your head prevents Endermen from aggroing at the cost of some visibility; a quick splash of water also scatters anyone pursuing you.

04Damage the Dragon: Circling, Charging and the Perch Phase

Once all ten crystals are down, the dragon can't heal and the fight becomes a straightforward damage race. She cycles through a few behaviours, and each calls for a different response.

Circling / strafing: the dragon glides around the outer edge of the arena and occasionally fires a fireball that leaves a pool of lingering dragon's breath on the ground — standing in it deals damage over time, so keep moving. Use your bow to land shots on her head; headshots deal noticeably more damage than hits to the body or wings.

Charge: occasionally the dragon swoops directly at the player. Sidestep it — landing an arrow to the head during a direct charge is one of the cleanest damage windows in the fight.

Perch phase — your biggest damage window: periodically the dragon lands on the exit portal fountain, lowers her head, and breathes a stream of dragon's breath. During this phase she ignores arrows entirely, so switch to your sword and land as many head hits as possible. Approach from the side rather than walking over the portal itself, since stepping on it while she perches will pull you into the End Portal and send you back to the Overworld.

05Bed Explosions (Advanced, Use With Caution)

Beds explode when used in dimensions without a day-night cycle, including The End. Some players exploit this by placing a bed next to the central portal while the dragon perches over it, taking cover behind a solid block, and right-clicking the bed to detonate it. A well-placed explosion can strip roughly a fifth of the dragon's remaining health in one hit, and it works fastest when the dragon's head is directly above the bed.

The risk is real: standing too close when the bed detonates can kill you outright, since most of the explosion damage is applied at your feet. If you attempt it, wear Blast Protection, crouch behind cover, and only trigger it when you're confident about positioning. This is a shortcut for players comfortable with precise timing, not a requirement — the sword-and-bow perch rotation above is enough to win the fight on its own.

06Rewards: Dragon Egg, XP and What Comes Next

When the dragon's health reaches zero, she dissolves in beams of light and several things happen at once:

The exit portal opens permanently afterward, letting you return to the Overworld whenever you like. To fight the dragon again, craft four End Crystals and place one on each of the four cardinal sides of the exit portal — she respawns along with fresh healing crystals on all ten pillars, though repeat kills award only 500 XP instead of the full 12,000.

FAQ

How many End Crystals are there in the Ender Dragon fight?

Ten. One sits on top of each obsidian pillar surrounding the exit portal, and two of them are encased in iron bar cages that need to be broken open before you can destroy those crystals.

How much XP does the Ender Dragon give?

Defeating the Ender Dragon for the first time awards 12,000 XP. Re-summoned dragon kills after that award only 500 XP each.

Can you fight the Ender Dragon again after defeating it?

Yes. Craft four End Crystals and place one on each of the four cardinal edges of the exit portal in The End. The dragon respawns along with fresh healing crystals on the pillars.

What is the bed trick for the Ender Dragon?

Beds explode when used in The End. Some players place a bed near the exit portal while the dragon perches, take cover behind a block, then trigger the bed to deal a large burst of damage — roughly a fifth of her health per well-placed explosion. It's risky without precise positioning, so it's optional rather than required.
