Minecraft Copper Golem Build, Sorting & Oxidation

The copper golem arrived in the Copper Age drop (Java 1.21.9) and it is not a fighter — it is a tiny item courier. Build it, feed a copper chest, and it carries items to matching chests. Here is how to summon it, what it will and will not sort, and how to stop it turning into a statue.

01How to Build a Copper Golem

Place a block of copper (any oxidation stage works), then put a carved pumpkin or jack o'lantern on top. The pumpkin must go on last — by you, a dispenser or an enderman. The copper block turns into a copper chest and the golem appears.

02The Copper Chest

The chest the golem leaves behind is its input point. Sources say you can craft more with a chest surrounded by 8 copper ingots. Put items in a copper chest and a golem with empty hands will come to collect them.

03How the Sorting Works

• The golem takes up to 16 items from a copper chest.
• It stops for about 3 seconds at each copper chest to look through it.
• It delivers to a chest (including trapped chests) that is empty or already holds the same item type.
• It remembers up to 9 copper chests it has visited.
• It ignores durability, enchantments and the contents of shulker boxes and bundles when matching.

Sources give different search ranges, so we do not quote a number; keep your chests within a few blocks of the golem and test the setup.

If no chest matches, the item stays with the golem until a suitable chest turns up, so keep an overflow chest ready.

04Practical Storage Setup

1. Place the copper chest where your farms output items.
2. Put one wooden chest per item type nearby and seed each with a single example item.
3. Leave at least one empty chest for overflow so items are not stuck.
4. Wax the golem if the sorter must stay in place for long.

05Health and Drops

A copper golem has 12 HP (6 hearts), is passive, runs around in a panic if attacked and takes no fall damage. Killing it drops 1–3 copper ingots, so do not attack your sorter.

06Oxidation Stages

Like copper blocks, the golem goes through four stages: unoxidized, exposed, weathered and oxidized, each taking roughly 7 hours to 7 hours 40 minutes (420–460 minutes) per the wiki. You can slow this in two ways:

• Honeycomb waxes it and stops oxidation.
• An axe scrapes one stage at a time, or removes wax.

07Copper Golem Statues

A fully oxidized, unwaxed golem standing in open air has a small chance each tick to become a copper golem statue, on average after about 8.6 seconds. The statue has four poses: standing, sitting, running and star, changed by interacting with it. A redstone comparator reads the pose as signal strength 1 to 4 in that order.

08Keeping Your Sorter Alive

Wax the golem with honeycomb straight after building it. If it has already oxidized, scrape it with an axe first and wax it after. Cross-check the wiki for your version because the Java and Bedrock numbers can differ.
