Iron is the backbone of Minecraft — tools, armour, hoppers, rails, anvils, buckets and every other mid-game build eats it by the stack. An iron golem farm fixes that permanently: a handful of scared villagers, a trapped zombie and a lava pit combine to produce iron ingots continuously while you do anything else. This guide explains why golems spawn, how to build a beginner-friendly three-villager zombie-panic farm from scratch, and how to diagnose the most common faults when production stops.
01Why Iron Runs Out — and Why a Farm Fixes It
A diamond pickaxe costs 3 diamonds but the tools and armour around it need iron by the dozen: 24 ingots for a full iron armour set, 3 per iron pickaxe, 5 per hopper, 6 per rail segment, and so on. Strip-mining keeps up for a while, but once you start building mob farms, storage systems and beacon bases the demand outpaces manual mining quickly.
An iron golem farm works because Minecraft spawns iron golems to protect villagers who feel threatened. Each golem drops 3–5 iron ingots when killed, regardless of how it dies. Route golems into a lava pit, funnel the ingots into a hopper, and you have a passive iron source that fills a chest in the background.

02How Iron Golems Spawn — the Zombie-Panic Mechanic
Iron golems spawn naturally inside large villages, but the mechanism most farms exploit is the zombie-panic response. When a villager sees or hears a zombie within roughly 8 blocks, it enters a frightened state and begins broadcasting distress gossip. If at least three villagers in close proximity are all in that frightened state at the same time, Minecraft attempts to spawn an iron golem nearby to protect them.
Spawn conditions:
- At least 3 villagers in close proximity must be simultaneously frightened.
- Each villager must have a linked bed — a bed it slept in and considers its own.
- The golem spawn location must have a solid block below, with 3 non-full blocks of clearance above — the spawn point itself plus the 2 blocks directly above it must all be non-solid air. If no valid spawn point exists within range, the spawn attempt fails.
- There is a cooldown of roughly 30 seconds between successful spawns.
The farm exploits these rules deliberately: villagers are housed above a spawn platform, a zombie in a boat keeps them permanently frightened without ever reaching them, and the only valid solid ground within range is the spot above your kill zone — so every golem walks straight into the lava.
Iron golems do not despawn naturally. Any golem that is not channelled into the kill zone will wander around your farm and eventually block future spawns — which is why the design must leave the golem nowhere else to land.
03What You Need Before You Build
You will need the following materials. Most are cheap; the hardest part is capturing villagers and a zombie.
- 3 villagers (ideally already linked to professions; any type works)
- 3 beds — one per villager, any colour
- 3 workstations (any: smoker, lectern, barrel, cartography table, etc.) — to keep villagers employed and stationary
- 1 zombie — the farm's permanent threat source
- 1 boat — traps the zombie so it cannot wander or despawn (boats are the cleanest trap in both Java and Bedrock)
- Glass blocks — separate the zombie from the villagers so it cannot damage them, while still letting them see it
- Building blocks (cobblestone, deepslate, any solid block) — platform, walls, drop shaft
- 1 lava bucket — the kill mechanism
- 4–6 hoppers and 1 chest — item collection
- Minecart and rails (optional) — an alternative zombie trap if you cannot get a boat in position easily
Capturing a zombie is the trickiest step. Dig a 2×1 pit near a zombie at night, wait for it to fall in, then place a boat on top of it — the zombie will board the boat and become immobile. The boat prevents natural despawn on its own, so a name tag is optional. However, zombies still burn in direct sunlight regardless of being in a boat, so always enclose the cage before dawn or capture the zombie in a spot that will be covered by your glass cage.
04Step-by-Step: Building the Farm
This design places everything on a raised platform so golems spawn above your kill zone and fall straight in. Build it anywhere — it does not need to connect to a natural village.
- Build the platform. Lay a 9×5 solid platform 10–12 blocks above the ground (or above wherever you want your collection chest). Leave a 2×2 hole in the centre of the platform — this is the golem drop shaft.
- Add walls and a roof. Enclose the platform with walls 3 blocks high and a solid roof. The enclosure stops golems spawning outside the platform and keeps them walking toward the centre. Leave the 2×2 hole in the floor open.
- Place beds and workstations. Inside the enclosure, place 3 beds against one wall and 3 workstations nearby. Let villagers link to them (they need to sleep at least one night cycle to complete the link).
- Import three villagers. Use a boat or minecart rail to carry villagers to the platform. Once inside, they will quickly discover and link to the beds.
- Add the zombie cage. Build a small 1×1×2 glass box against the outside of one wall, at the same height as the villagers. Place the zombie (already in a boat) inside the glass cage. The villagers inside must have line of sight through the glass. The zombie cannot reach them — but they can see it and will enter a frightened state.
- Build the drop shaft. Below the 2×2 platform hole, construct a 2×2 vertical shaft down 8–10 blocks. Wall it in on all sides.
- Add the kill chamber. At the base of the shaft, create a small chamber. Place lava in the centre — one bucket is enough. Golems that fall will land in or adjacent to the lava and die within seconds.
- Place hoppers and a chest. Below or beside the lava chamber, place hoppers pointing into a chest. Test that the hoppers can reach the drop zone where iron ingots will land after the golem dies. A hopper placed directly below the kill platform collects reliably.
- Test the farm. After a night cycle (so villagers have slept and are linked), stand within 128 blocks. Within a minute or two of the zombie being in view, an iron golem should spawn on the platform, walk toward the centre hole, and fall into the lava. Check the chest for iron ingots.

06Troubleshooting: Why Your Farm Has Stopped
Iron golem farms have a few failure modes that are easy to overlook:
- Golems not spawning at all. The most common reason is that no valid spawn surface exists inside the villager chamber. Golems need a solid block with 2 clear air blocks above it. If your ceiling is too low (under 3 blocks) or the floor is fully blocked, the spawn attempt fails every time. Also check that all three villagers have slept in their linked beds at least once — unlinked villagers do not contribute to panic-spawning.
- Villagers not frightened. The zombie must have line of sight through the glass to at least one villager. Rotate the glass cage so the zombie faces inward. Note: if your zombie converted to a drowned (head submerged in water for 30 seconds), the farm can technically still work — drowned trigger villager panic with the same 8-block range as zombies. However, drowned navigate differently and can be less reliable as a stationary threat; replacing it with a fresh zombie and keeping the cage dry is the simpler fix.
- Golem not falling into the hole. Iron golems are large (1.4×2.7 blocks) and will walk toward the nearest edge rather than a specific hole. If your platform is too large, some golems wander to the outer walls instead. Make the platform smaller (5×5 maximum) or add a small lip of blocks around all edges except the central hole to funnel them in.
- No iron in the chest. Verify that every hopper is pointing toward the next hopper or into the chest. A hopper placed flat collects items from above and pushes to the block it is pointing at. Use Shift+right-click a chest or hopper to attach a new hopper in the correct direction. One hopper placed directly under the lava pit (not in the lava) is the simplest setup.
- Zombie despawning. A zombie sitting inside a boat does not despawn — the boat itself prevents natural despawn without needing a name tag. A name tag is useful insurance in case the zombie somehow exits the boat during setup or is swapped out, but it is not required once the zombie is boated. If you are using a minecart trap instead of a boat, a name tag is then required.
- Farm only works while nearby. This is expected behaviour — Minecraft only loads and simulates chunks within 128 blocks (Java) or a similar distance (Bedrock) of the player. The farm produces iron while you are close enough; it stops when you are too far away. AFK platforms near the farm are a common solution.
07Scaling Up: More Villagers, More Iron
The three-villager design is a reliable starter farm. To increase output, add more villager cells — each group of three villagers with their own beds and line of sight to a zombie chamber adds another independent golem-spawning node on the same cooldown timer. Many Minecraft players run 10–20 villager clusters in a single multi-cell farm for significantly higher iron yields.
The most important rule when scaling is to keep each cell's spawn platform as the only valid spawn surface. A golem that spawns in an unintended location wanders, eventually gets stuck, and breaks the next spawn attempt. Before adding cells, verify the current cell is working cleanly by listening for the thud of a golem landing and checking the chest regularly.
If you want higher iron without the complexity, the other reliable upgrade is a raids farm (requires completing a bad omen raid above the farm) — but that is a significantly more advanced project. The zombie-panic design here is the easiest path to consistent, renewable iron from mid-game onward.
08Java vs Bedrock: What Is Different
The core zombie-panic mechanic works in both editions, but there are small practical differences:
- Spawn rates may differ slightly between editions due to differences in village-golem spawning logic. Both produce golems from the zombie-panic design; Bedrock is sometimes reported to spawn golems slightly less frequently per cell.
- Zombie in a boat behaviour is identical — immobile, does not despawn (the boat prevents despawn without needing a name tag), line of sight works through glass. A name tag is optional extra insurance in both editions.
- Lava mechanics are identical in both — golems die in lava, items float to the surface and are collected by hoppers.
- Chunk loading distance on console and mobile Bedrock editions can be lower than on PC Java. If the farm stops while you are supposedly nearby, check your render distance settings and ensure it is high enough to keep the farm chunks loaded.
