01The Answer: Y=-59
Since the Caves & Cliffs Part II update expanded the world downward to Y=-64 and reworked ore generation, diamond ore follows a triangular distribution across the range Y=16 down to Y=-63: sparse near the top of that range, and increasingly dense the deeper you dig, peaking at Y=-59. That's the level with the highest average diamond ore per chunk of any Y-coordinate in the game.
Two details matter in practice. First, roughly all diamond ore below Y=0 generates as its deepslate variant rather than regular diamond ore — deepslate is visually darker and takes about 50% longer to mine, so bring a pickaxe with Efficiency if you have one. Second, bedrock itself starts generating irregularly around Y=-60, meaning a few ore veins that close to the floor get interrupted or blocked entirely — which is why Y=-59 (a few blocks above the messiest bedrock layer) outperforms mining right at the very bottom of the world.
02Why Y=-59 and Not the Very Bottom of the World?
The underlying math helps explain the odd-looking number. Minecraft's ore generator models diamond ore with a triangular probability curve whose true center sits below the playable world (around Y=-144), which means within the actual reachable range (Y=16 to Y=-64) the curve is still climbing the entire way down — it just gets clipped by the world's bedrock floor before it can fall back off the other side. That's why density keeps increasing as you approach Y=-64, but bedrock itself starts appearing unevenly from about Y=-60 downward, occasionally eating into ore veins that would otherwise generate there. Y=-59 sits right at the point of maximum density before that interference becomes a real cost.
03Branch Mining vs Cave Mining at Y=-59
Two viable approaches, with a real tradeoff between consistency and speed:
- Branch mining — dig a main tunnel at Y=-59, then branch perpendicular tunnels every 2 blocks (2-block spacing exposes every possible ore vein without wasted digging, since diamond veins are small). This is slow but statistically reliable and works on any seed — you're not depending on the world having generated large open caves near you.
- Cave mining / spelunking — explore existing cave systems and ravines that pass through the Y=-54 to -59 band. Naturally generated caves expose far more surface area per minute of digging than branch mining does, so a good cave can out-produce branch mining significantly — but it's higher-variance: a bad cave with no exposed ore wastes just as much time.
In practice, most efficient players do both: branch mine as a fallback while exploring any caves or ravines they pass through at the right depth. An iron, diamond, or netherite pickaxe is required either way — stone and below cannot mine diamond ore at all, only knock it without dropping anything.
04Fortune and Silk Touch: What Enchantment to Bring
Diamond ore drops a single raw diamond per block with an unenchanted pickaxe. Fortune increases that yield: Fortune III gives a chance of dropping 2, 3, or 4 diamonds per block (with a small chance of the base 1), averaging out to roughly 2.2 diamonds per ore block over a full mining session — more than double the unenchanted rate.
Silk Touch is the alternative: it makes the ore block itself drop instead of raw diamonds, which is only useful if you want to move or decoratively place diamond ore blocks — for actually collecting diamonds to use, Fortune III is strictly better and is what you should enchant your mining pickaxe with before heading down to Y=-59.
05Safety at Y=-59
This depth sits well within lava country. Lava lakes and pockets are common from roughly Y=-54 down to the bottom of the world, so keep a water bucket or Fire Resistance potion on hand, and mine carefully into unexplored blocks rather than sprinting through darkness. If you'd rather trade a small amount of density for extra safety, staying a few levels higher (around Y=-53 to Y=-50) reduces how often you run into lava while still being well within the high-density band.
