Minecraft Enchantment Calculator — Interactive Picker for Every Item
Not sure which enchantments go on which item — or which option to pick when two are mutually exclusive? This interactive calculator covers all 16 enchantable item types for Java 26.x. Select an item and the full recommended build appears instantly, with a one-line reason behind every enchantment and toggle groups for the choices you actually have to make (Sharpness vs. Smite, Fortune vs. Silk Touch, Infinity vs. Mending, and more). For the full ranked breakdown of the most powerful enchantments overall, see the Best Minecraft Enchantments guide; for how the enchanting table itself works (bookshelves, lapis, prior-work penalty), see the Enchanting Guide.
01How These Builds Are Designed — and Why Exclusives Matter
The builds shown are designed for a fully geared survival player: Netherite or diamond gear, an enchanting table with 15 bookshelves, at least one Librarian villager, and an XP source. Every build includes Unbreaking III and Mending where possible — those two together eliminate the durability problem entirely and let you focus on everything else. This calculator tells you which enchantments go on which item; if you want to know how to get them (bookshelf placement, anvil-combining order, prior-work penalty), the companion Enchanting Guide has that covered.
Several enchantments are mutually exclusive — Minecraft prevents them from coexisting on the same item at all. The pairs most likely to trip you up:
- Sharpness / Smite / Bane of Arthropods — pick one damage bonus per weapon. Sharpness V wins for general play; Smite V is stronger for the Wither and Nether.
- Fortune III / Silk Touch — Fortune gives more resource drops; Silk Touch picks up blocks intact. Many players keep two pickaxes (or two shovels) for exactly this.
- Protection / Fire Protection / Blast Protection / Projectile Protection — only one protection type per armour piece. Protection IV is the best all-round choice; specialised variants double the bonus but only against that damage type.
- Infinity / Mending (bow) — Infinity makes one arrow last forever; Mending self-repairs but needs a steady arrow supply. They cannot coexist.
- Depth Strider / Frost Walker (boots) — two ways to handle water movement; pick one per pair of boots.
- Loyalty + Channeling / Riptide (trident) — the throw mode is either traditional with auto-return and lightning, or self-propulsion through water.
- Multishot / Piercing (crossbow) — wide spread or deep penetration, not both.
The picker below handles all of these automatically. Toggle your preferred option in any mutually exclusive group and the build list updates immediately.

03How to Actually Get These Enchantments
Getting the right enchantments reliably means using all three sources together — the enchanting table for cheap randomness, villager trades for specific high-level books, and loot chests as a windfall. See the Minecraft Enchanting Guide for the full bookshelf setup and anvil-combining order; this section focuses on where each source is strongest.
- Enchanting table for early-game bulk. Set up 15 bookshelves, enchant books at the level-30 slot, and bank anything useful. Enchanting a throwaway book rerolls the offers — use this to reshuffle the table when the three options are bad. The 1-level slot costs almost nothing per roll.
- Librarian villagers for guaranteed specifics. Each Librarian locks in one enchanted book trade. Break and replace the lectern before trading to reroll the offer until you get the enchantment you need. Set up a dedicated Librarian hall with one villager per enchantment you want to reliably farm. This is the only way to reliably get specific high-level books like Sharpness V or Efficiency V.
- Fishing for treasure enchantments. Mending, Frost Walker, Soul Speed, Swift Sneak, and Curse of Binding are all treasure enchantments that never appear at the enchanting table. Fishing with Luck of the Sea III is the fastest renewable source of Mending books. A good XP farm running alongside an AFK fish farm covers the full collection over time.
- Trial Chambers for Wind Burst. Wind Burst III (mace-exclusive) only drops from Ominous Vaults — it cannot be fished, traded, or found in a dungeon chest. See the Trial Chambers and Mace Guide for the full Ominous run strategy and what to bring.
On the anvil, pyramid-combine books before applying them to gear: two Sharpness I books make Sharpness II, two Sharpness II make Sharpness III, and so on. This keeps the item's prior-work penalty low and avoids the dreaded Too Expensive wall showing up before your god build is finished.
04Enchantments Worth Skipping
Not every enchantment earns a slot in a final build. Some are actively harmful; others are simply outclassed by better options:
- Curse of Vanishing — the item disappears on death. Never put this on gear intentionally. It cannot be removed by a grindstone; if you find it on a valuable item, strip all enchantments on a grindstone and start fresh.
- Curse of Binding — locks the item in its armour slot until the piece breaks or you die. Only useful in trolly multiplayer scenarios.
- Smite / Bane of Arthropods as a main-weapon enchantment — both outperform Sharpness V against their specific targets, but add zero damage against everything else. Build a dedicated undead-slayer sword if you want Smite; keep Sharpness V on your main weapon for general use.
- Thorns stacked across all four armour pieces — Thorns III on one piece is strong, especially on the chestplate. Stacking it on all four pieces accelerates armour degradation significantly, burning through Mending upkeep fast. One piece is enough.
- Power I–IV on a bow — low-level Power enchantments are strictly weaker than Power V. If you are using the enchanting table directly for your bow, keep rerolling until Power V appears rather than accepting a lower-level roll.
FAQ
What is the best enchantment for a sword in Minecraft?
Sharpness V is the best general sword enchantment — it deals extra damage against all mob types. Pair it with Looting III for better drops, Fire Aspect II to cook kills automatically, Sweeping Edge III (Java Edition only) for crowd clearing, and Mending so the sword never wears out. For an undead-focused build — Wither farms, Nether fortress runs — Smite V outperforms Sharpness V because it gives a larger bonus exclusively against zombies, skeletons, and wither-type mobs.
Can you have Mending and Infinity on the same bow?
No. Mending and Infinity are mutually exclusive — Minecraft blocks them from being on the same bow. Infinity is usually the better pick: one arrow in your inventory lasts forever. Mending is only worth choosing over Infinity if you already have a skeleton XP farm that provides unlimited arrows, since then you want the bow to auto-repair from XP rather than worry about arrow supply.
Does Fortune work with Silk Touch in Minecraft?
No. Fortune and Silk Touch are mutually exclusive and cannot appear on the same tool, and they cannot be combined on an anvil either. Most experienced players keep two pickaxes: one with Fortune III for mining diamonds, emeralds, gold, coal, and nether quartz, and a second with Silk Touch for collecting spawners, ore blocks, grass, mycelium, and bee nests without triggering their drops.
What enchantments go on a Mace?
The Mace has three exclusive enchantments unique to it: Density (max V, adds extra smash damage per block fallen per level), Breach (max IV, reduces the target's effective armour by up to 60%), and Wind Burst (max III, launches you upward after each successful smash for chained aerial attacks). On top of those, the Mace also accepts Smite V or Bane of Arthropods V as creature-specific bonuses, Fire Aspect II, Knockback II, Unbreaking III, and Mending. Wind Burst can only be obtained from Ominous Vaults in Trial Chambers.
Can Loyalty and Channeling be on the same trident?
Yes — Loyalty and Channeling are fully compatible with each other and make a strong combined build. Loyalty (max III) makes the trident return after throwing; Channeling (max I) summons lightning on the hit target during a thunderstorm. The incompatible enchantment is Riptide: Riptide cannot coexist with either Loyalty or Channeling. Riptide replaces the trident's normal throwing with a self-propulsion mechanic that only activates in water or rain.
