How to Breed Animals in Minecraft

Breeding animals gives you a renewable supply of food, wool, leather and more — no more wandering the map hunting cows. The method is the same for almost every mob: feed two adult animals of the same species their preferred food, they enter love mode (hearts), and a baby appears. The only thing that changes is which food each animal wants. Here is the full list and exactly how it works.

01How Breeding Works

Breeding follows the same four steps for nearly every animal in the game:

1. Get two adult animals of the same species close together (within a few blocks). Babies cannot breed.
2. Hold that animal's preferred food and press use on each one to feed it.
3. Both enter love mode — red hearts float above them and they move toward each other.
4. A baby spawns between them, and you earn a little XP.

After breeding, each animal goes on a five-minute cooldown before it can breed again. Babies take about 20 minutes of real time to grow into adults (baby Sniffers — snifflets — are the one exception, taking 40 minutes), and you can speed that up by feeding the baby its food: each feed shaves roughly 10% off however much growing time is left.

Each animal is won over by a specific food. Here is what to carry:

• Cows, Mooshrooms, Sheep, Goats — Wheat
• Pigs — Carrot, Potato or Beetroot
• Chickens — Any seeds (wheat, beetroot, melon, pumpkin)
• Rabbits — Carrot, Golden Carrot or Dandelion
• Horses and Donkeys — Golden Apple or Golden Carrot
• Llamas — Hay Bale
• Wolves (tamed) — Any meat (raw or cooked)
• Cats and Ocelots — Raw Cod or Raw Salmon
• Foxes — Sweet Berries or Glow Berries
• Pandas — Bamboo (with bamboo growing nearby)
• Bees — Any flower
• Turtles — Seagrass
• Axolotls — Bucket of Tropical Fish
• Frogs — Slimeball
• Striders — Warped Fungus
• Hoglins — Crimson Fungus
• Sniffers — Torchflower Seeds

03Animals With Special Rules

A handful of mobs have extra conditions before they will breed:

• Pandas need bamboo growing nearby before two fed pandas will produce a cub. On Bedrock that means at least eight bamboo plants within a five-block radius; on Java the requirement is looser — just one bamboo plant somewhere in the area around them.
• Turtles breed with seagrass, but the female then walks back to the sandy beach it spawned on (its "home") to dig and lay eggs — the eggs hatch into baby turtles.
• Wolves and cats must be tamed first (bones for wolves, fish for cats) before they can be bred.
• Foxes bred in captivity produce a kit that trusts you; lead the parents away with a lead so the kit does not follow them off.

04Building a Simple Animal Farm

A basic pen turns breeding into a steady supply line. Build it like this:

1. Fence off a square area with a fence gate. Animals cannot jump fences (which are 1.5 blocks tall to mobs).
2. Hold the animal's food and walk it into the pen — most animals follow a player holding their food within about 10 blocks.
3. Close the gate, then feed two of them to start breeding.
4. Keep a small breeding stock and harvest the rest for food, wool or leather.

Avoid massively overcrowding a single pen — too many entities in one spot causes lag and can push animals through walls. Spread large farms across several pens instead.

05Why Breeding Is Worth It

A self-sustaining farm pays off fast. The most useful payoffs:

• Cows — beef (your best early food) plus leather for books, item frames and armor.
• Sheep — wool for beds and building; shear them instead of killing and the wool regrows as they eat grass.
• Chickens — eggs, plus feathers for arrows.
• Pigs and rabbits — extra food sources, with rabbits also dropping hide and rare rabbit's foot.

Because every breed also grants XP, a large farm doubles as a slow but safe experience source for enchanting.
