How to Tame and Ride a Horse in Minecraft

Horses are the fastest reliable way to cross the Overworld on land, and taming one takes nothing more than patience and an empty hand. You climb on repeatedly until the horse stops bucking you off and shows hearts, then fit a saddle to take control. Bring a little food and a saddle and you can have a personal mount within a couple of minutes.

01Where to Find Horses

Wild horses spawn in herds of two to six in Plains (including Sunflower Plains) and Savanna biomes (including Savanna Plateau and Windswept Savanna), plus in the stables and animal pens generated inside Villages. They come in seven base coat colours (white, creamy, chestnut, brown, black, grey, dark brown) with different markings — these are purely cosmetic and have no effect on stats.

You will often see donkeys in the same Plains and Savanna areas too. They are tamed exactly the same way as horses, are slightly slower, but can be fitted with a chest to carry items — making them a moving storage unit for long trips.

02How to Tame a Horse (Step by Step)

Taming a horse does not use any item — you simply mount it over and over until it accepts you. Here is the reliable method:

1. Make sure your hand is empty (or holding a non-food item). Holding food will make you feed the horse instead of mounting it.
2. Approach the horse and press use (right-click / left trigger / tap) to climb on.
3. The horse will usually buck you off, shown by a puff of smoke and grey hearts. Get back on immediately and repeat.
4. After a few attempts, red hearts appear around the horse — it is now tamed and will let you stay on its back.

Feeding the horse before and during taming raises its temper, which means it accepts you in fewer attempts. Sugar, wheat, and especially golden apples or golden carrots speed the process up noticeably.

03Saddle Up — You Need a Saddle to Steer

A tamed horse will carry you, but you cannot control its direction until it is wearing a saddle. Importantly, saddles cannot be crafted in Minecraft — you have to find one.

Common ways to get a saddle:

• Chest loot — dungeons, desert and jungle temples, Nether fortresses, bastion remnants, and village chests frequently contain saddles.
• Fishing — saddles are part of the rare "treasure" fishing loot table.
• Villager trades — master-level Leatherworker villagers, and the Wandering Trader, sometimes sell saddles for emeralds.

Once you have one, mount the horse and press the inventory key (E on PC) to open the horse's equipment screen, then drag the saddle into the saddle slot. You can now steer with the movement keys and jump with the jump button.

04Feeding and Healing Your Horse

Horses eat a range of foods, each with a different use — taming temper, healing, growth, and breeding:

• Sugar / Wheat — small temper and minor healing; cheap and easy early on.
• Apple — moderate healing and temper.
• Hay Bale — the best healing item and great for raising temper quickly.
• Golden Carrot / Golden Apple — the strongest temper boost, speed up a foal's growth, and are the only foods that put two horses into breeding mode.

To feed, hold the food and press use on the horse. A horse will only eat when the food would actually benefit it (for example, it will not eat to heal if already at full health).

05Horse Armor and Protection

Horses can wear horse armor in their second equipment slot to reduce the damage they take. There are five tiers — leather (dyeable), iron, gold, diamond, and netherite. Only leather (7 leather at a crafting table) and netherite horse armor can be crafted; iron, gold, and diamond horse armor are not craftable — you can only find them in chest loot.

Open the horse's inventory the same way you fit the saddle and drop the armor into the armor slot. Note that only true horses can wear armor — donkeys and mules cannot, though they make up for it with their chest-carrying ability.

06Stats, Breeding, Donkeys and Mules

Every horse rolls random values for three hidden stats: movement speed, jump height, and maximum health. That is why two identical-looking horses can feel very different to ride. Top-tier horses move at roughly 14 blocks per second — much faster than sprinting.

To get a better mount, breed two tamed horses: feed each one a golden apple or golden carrot and they will produce a foal whose stats are an average of the parents' plus a small random roll. Breed your two best horses repeatedly to push speed and jump higher.

A few extra tips for managing horses:

• Use a lead and a fence post to tie a horse in place, or build a fenced stable so it cannot wander off.
• Breed a horse with a donkey to get a mule — mules can carry a chest like donkeys but are sterile (they cannot be bred further).
• Foals take about 20 minutes to grow into adults; feed them to speed this up.
