Subnautica 2 entered Steam Early Access on 14 May 2026. You can buy and play it now on PC via Steam, but as an Early Access title it is still being developed — new biomes, creatures, craftables, and story content are added with each update. The full 1.0 release date has not been announced yet.
Yes. Subnautica 2 supports optional online co-op for up to four players. You can still play the entire game solo in single-player mode if you prefer — the co-op is strictly optional, not required. Multiplayer sessions are hosted by one player and friends can join or leave freely.
Subnautica 2 is a standalone sequel set on an all-new alien ocean planet, developed by Unknown Worlds. You do not need to have played the original Subnautica or Below Zero to enjoy it — the story and setting are independent. However, fans of the first game will find familiar mechanics and a similar tone of underwater exploration and survival.
Absolutely. Subnautica 2 is designed first and foremost as a single-player experience. Co-op is an optional layer you can choose to use with up to three friends, but the game is fully playable — and fully designed — for solo play. You are not locked out of any content by playing alone.
