Terraria NPC Happiness Calculator Price Modifier & Pylon Status (1.4.5)

Updated July 20267 min readBy the HowToPlayHub team

Pick any town NPC, choose their biome, and toggle neighbors to instantly see the exact shop price modifier — plus whether they sell a Pylon. All 26 town NPC preferences are verified against terraria.wiki.gg for version 1.4.5. Key 1.4.5 change: pylons no longer require a happiness threshold — any vendor NPC (except the Tavernkeep) sells their biome's Pylon as long as at least one other NPC lives nearby.

02How the Happiness System Works

Every town NPC has a preferred biome and opinions about their neighbors. These preferences combine multiplicatively into a price modifier: a 94% modifier means items cost 6% less; an 88% modifier means 12% off; a hated biome or neighbor can push prices above 100%.

All modifiers multiply together. The result is hard-capped at a minimum of 75% (maximum discount possible) and a maximum of 150% (maximum surcharge). The Princess is a special case: she has no biome preference, is liked (×0.94) by most NPCs — Santa Claus uniquely loves her (×0.88) — and she dynamically loves up to three of the nearest NPCs around her.

03Pylon Changes in 1.4.5

Version 1.4.5 removed the happiness threshold for pylon sales entirely. Before this patch, an NPC needed a price modifier at or below 90% to stock their biome's Pylon. Now any vendor NPC sells the Pylon for their current biome as long as at least one other NPC lives nearby:

04Best NPC Pairings for Maximum Discount

The best combinations stack a loved or liked biome with a loved neighbor, keeping the cluster to 2 NPCs to preserve the solitude bonus (×0.95). Space each cluster at least 120 tiles from the next to maintain the outer-ring condition:

  1. Zoologist + Witch Doctor in Forest — Zoologist loves Forest (×0.88) and loves Witch Doctor (×0.88): 0.88 × 0.88 × 0.95 = 73.6%, floored at 75%.
  2. Arms Dealer + Nurse in Desert — Desert is liked (×0.94), Nurse is loved (×0.88): 0.94 × 0.88 × 0.95 ≈ 79%.
  3. Mechanic + Goblin Tinkerer in Snow — Snow is liked (×0.94), Goblin Tinkerer is loved (×0.88): 79%.
  4. Goblin Tinkerer + Mechanic in Underground / Cavern — Underground is liked (×0.94), Mechanic is loved (×0.88): 79%.
  5. Santa Claus + Princess in Snow — Santa loves Snow (×0.88) and loves Princess (×0.88): floored at 75% (December only — Santa Claus disappears after the holiday event ends).

FAQ

Does NPC happiness still affect pylon availability in Terraria 1.4.5?

No. As of version 1.4.5.0, the happiness threshold for pylon sales was removed entirely. Any vendor NPC (except the Tavernkeep and non-town merchants) will sell their biome's Pylon as long as at least one other NPC lives nearby. Happiness still affects shop prices — a happier NPC sells items cheaper — but pylons are no longer gated behind a discount threshold.

What is the maximum discount in Terraria NPC happiness?

The hard minimum price is 75% of base — even with stacked loved bonuses the game does not go below that. The theoretical best without the cap is a loved biome (×0.88) plus a loved neighbor (×0.88) plus the solitude bonus (×0.95) = 73.6%, which gets floored to 75%. You cannot achieve a discount deeper than 25% off through happiness alone.

How many NPCs can live within 25 tiles before crowding applies?

Three NPCs total — the NPC itself plus two others within 25 tiles — avoids crowding and still qualifies for the solitude bonus (if the 25–120 tile ring also holds at most three others). A fourth NPC in the inner ring adds a ×1.05 penalty per head. Town Pets (Cat, Dog, Bunny) count toward crowding just like regular NPCs.

What biomes make NPCs unhappy in Terraria?

The Corruption/Crimson and Dungeon biomes apply unhappiness penalties for most NPCs who prefer surface or cave biomes. For example, the Truffle hates evil biomes and the Dungeon (×1.12 each), the Party Girl and Steampunker also hate these areas. Always verify on terraria.wiki.gg for your patch version, as NPC preferences can shift across updates.

Which NPCs don't sell Pylons in Terraria 1.4.5?

Three NPC types cannot sell Pylons: the Tavernkeep (removed in patch 1.4.5.4 because his shop is full after Golem), the Skeleton Merchant (not a permanent town NPC), and the Traveling Merchant (not a town NPC). Every other vendor can sell the Pylon corresponding to their current biome when at least one other NPC lives nearby — no happiness threshold required.

What are the two new Pylons added in Terraria 1.4.5?

Terraria 1.4.5 added the Underworld Pylon and the Aether Pylon. The Underworld Pylon is obtained from any vendor NPC (except the Tavernkeep) housed in The Underworld biome. The Aether Pylon requires housing an NPC in the Aether biome (the Shimmer liquid area, typically found in the Cavern layer near the center of the world). Both follow the same rule as other Pylons: no happiness threshold, just a neighbor NPC nearby.
