Complete Terraria Boss Order from Pre-Hardmode to Endgame

Updated July 20269 min readBy the HowToPlayHub team

Terraria throws dozens of bosses at you across two major phases of play, and fighting them in the right order is the difference between smooth progression and hitting a wall. This guide maps every key boss — required and optional — from King Slime all the way to Moon Lord, explaining what each one unlocks and why the sequence matters.

01How Terraria Progression Works

Terraria splits into two distinct eras separated by a single fight. Pre-Hardmode is the opening phase where you build gear, explore biomes, and defeat a sequence of increasingly tough bosses. Every pre-Hardmode run ends the same way: killing the Wall of Flesh in the Underworld, which permanently transforms your world into Hardmode — spawning stronger enemies, new ores, and an entirely new boss roster.

Within each phase, some bosses are required (they gate content you cannot access otherwise) and some are optional (they offer strong loot but skipping them is possible). The guide marks each clearly. In general, follow the order below and you will always be appropriately geared for the next challenge.

02Pre-Hardmode Boss Order

The pre-Hardmode bosses should be tackled roughly in this sequence. Gear up between each fight — each boss drops materials or accessories that make the next encounter easier.

  1. King Slime (optional) — The easiest boss in the game. Spawn him with a Slime Crown or wait for a Slime Rain event. He drops the Ninja set and useful accessories. A good confidence-builder but not required.
  2. Eye of Cthulhu (recommended) — Often the first real boss. Drops Demonite or Crimtane ore depending on your world evil. He can also spawn randomly once you have 200 HP and at least 10 Defense.
  3. Eater of Worlds or Brain of Cthulhu (recommended for best pre-HM armor) — Your world has either Corruption (Eater of Worlds) or Crimson (Brain of Cthulhu). Defeating them yields Shadow Scales or Tissue Samples needed for Shadow/Crimson armor.
  4. Queen Bee (optional but strongly recommended) — Found in the Underground Jungle inside Bee Hives. She drops the Hive Pack, Honey Comb, and Bee Gun, and her defeat moves the Witch Doctor NPC in, who sells early Hardmode wings.
  5. Deerclops (optional) — A crossover boss that spawns during blizzards in the Snow biome (or via a Deer Thing). Solid loot but entirely skippable.
  6. Skeletron (required) — Guards the Dungeon entrance and must be defeated to safely enter and collect powerful loot. Fight him at night by talking to the Old Man at the Dungeon entrance.
  7. Wall of Flesh (required — triggers Hardmode) — Summoned in the Underworld by throwing a Guide Voodoo Doll into lava. Defeating it permanently activates Hardmode. There is no going back — be prepared before this fight.

03Hardmode Boss Order: Mechanical Bosses First

Once Hardmode begins, the first goal is to defeat all three Mechanical Bosses. They can be fought in any order, but all three must fall before Plantera becomes accessible. After the third one dies, Plantera's Bulbs begin spawning in the Underground Jungle, signaled by 'The jungle grows restless...'

Queen Slime is an optional Hardmode boss found in the Hallow (summon with a Gelatin Crystal), roughly equal in difficulty to the Mechanical Bosses.

04Plantera, Golem, and the Late-Hardmode Sequence

This is where the progression locks become critical. Two bosses gate the rest of the game:

05Endgame: Lunatic Cultist, Pillars, and Moon Lord

The final stretch is a three-step sequence that cannot be reordered. Make sure your gear is as strong as possible before starting it.

  1. Lunatic Cultist (required) — Four Cultists appear at the Dungeon entrance after Golem. Kill them to trigger the Lunatic Cultist boss, a fast teleporting spellcaster. His defeat begins the Lunar Events.
  2. Four Celestial Pillars (required) — The Solar, Vortex, Nebula, and Stardust Pillars appear across the world. Each shield drops after you kill 100 of its enemies. Destroy all four to gather Luminite Fragments — the material for the best gear in the game — and to summon Moon Lord.
  3. Moon Lord (final boss) — Summoned automatically 60 seconds after the last Pillar falls, or via a Celestial Sigil. Drops Luminite and end-tier weapons like the Meowmere, Terrarian, and Last Prism.

There is no mandatory order for the four Pillars, but many players tackle the Vortex Pillar first because its drops power up ranged builds, making the rest easier.

FAQ

Do I need to beat all three Mechanical Bosses to fight Plantera?

Yes. The Destroyer, The Twins, and Skeletron Prime must all be defeated before Plantera's Bulbs begin spawning in the Underground Jungle. The order does not matter, but all three are mandatory. After the third falls, the message 'The jungle grows restless...' confirms Bulbs have started appearing.

Can I fight Duke Fishron before Golem?

Technically yes — Duke Fishron only needs Hardmode and a Truffle Worm. However, he is far tougher than the Mechanical Bosses and Plantera, so most players wait until after Golem when their gear is strong enough. Veterans sometimes challenge him early for his powerful drops, but it is not recommended for a first run.

Is Queen Bee actually required for progression?

No, but she is among the most rewarding optional bosses. Defeating her unlocks the Witch Doctor NPC, who sells the Leaf Wings and other rare items, making early Hardmode mobility much easier. Her Honey Comb and Hive Pack accessories stay useful well into Hardmode.

What happens if I kill Moon Lord — does the game end?

No. After Moon Lord dies he drops Luminite and powerful endgame weapons, and the world continues normally. You can keep playing, farm rare drops, or attempt a new world or higher difficulty. Moon Lord can be resummoned with a Celestial Sigil at any time after the Lunatic Cultist is defeated.
