How to Beat Golem in Terraria — Temple Arena & Best Loadouts

Updated September 20268 min readBy

Golem guards the heart of the Lihzahrd Temple, and unlike most Hardmode bosses he fights you on his terrain — a cramped stone chamber you cannot freely rebuild. That makes this fight less about a fancy arena and more about target priority: which of his four attackable parts to burst down first, and in what order. This guide covers unlocking the Temple, prepping the altar room, breaking down Golem's head, body, and two fists, and the best weapons per class to get through both phases cleanly.

01Prerequisites — Unlocking the Lihzahrd Temple

Golem is only reachable after you have defeated Plantera, whose 100% guaranteed drop is the Temple Key. That key opens the locked door of the Lihzahrd Temple, a maze-like stone structure found in the Jungle biome (look for a distinctive brick pattern breaking up the jungle terrain, often guarded by Lihzahrd traps and dart shooters).

Inside the Temple, explore carefully — Lihzahrd Guardians hit hard and the traps (spike balls, flame traps, dart trenches) can shred low-defense characters. Along the way you'll collect Lihzahrd Power Cells from Lihzahrd Chests and enemy drops; you only need one to summon Golem, but grabbing extras lets you refight him without re-exploring.

02Summoning Golem and Prepping the Room

At the end of the Temple is the Lihzahrd Altar — a large stone platform in an open chamber. Place a Lihzahrd Power Cell into the altar to summon Golem immediately.

Unlike Plantera or the Mechanical Bosses, you cannot freely rebuild this arena — Temple blocks (Lihzahrd Brick) are far tougher to mine and the chamber layout is fixed. Work with what the room gives you instead of trying to flatten it:

Because room to maneuver is limited, prioritize mobility accessories (wings, boots) over pure damage accessories for this fight specifically.

03Golem's Stats and Attack Patterns

Golem has four attackable parts, but you only ever need to destroy three: the two fists and the head — the body cannot be targeted directly until the head is gone in phase 2.

Phase 1 — Golem's head and both fists are active simultaneously. The fists punch at range on chains, and the head lobs fireballs. Once a fist's HP hits 0, it detaches permanently and can no longer attack — destroying both fists removes most of the incoming damage before you even touch the head.

Phase 2 — Triggers once the head's HP reaches 0: the head detaches, becomes invincible, and floats independently while continuing to fire (lasers become frequent here), and the body starts jumping more aggressively on its own without fist support. Focus the body to end the fight, since the floating head can no longer be damaged.

Enraged state: if Golem or any of its parts leave the Temple's Underground Jungle area, it enrages — jumping faster and firing eye lasers more often. Keep the fight inside the Temple room.

04Best Strategy: Target Priority

The fight is won or lost on target order. Recommended sequence for most loadouts:

  1. Destroy both fists first. They have the lowest combined threat-to-HP ratio, and removing them eliminates the ranged punch attacks that do the most consistent chip damage in phase 1.
  2. Focus the head next. With fists gone, you can safely stand still and burst the head — watch for the laser attacks that ramp up below 50% head HP.
  3. Finish the body in phase 2. Once the head detaches, dodge its lasers while burning down the body, which is now the only damageable, non-invincible target.

Piercing and multi-hit weapons are strong throughout because Golem's parts are often clustered close together, letting a single attack tag two parts at once.

05Best Loadout by Class

Across all classes, the Piranha Gun is a notable niche pick: it locks onto and disables one fist's attacks while you deal with the other side, letting you fight both fists somewhat one at a time even in phase 1.

06Rewards and What Golem Unlocks

Golem's guaranteed drops include the Beetle Husk (100%, several per kill — used for Beetle armor, one of the best late-Hardmode melee sets) and a chance at the Picksaw (25%), the pickaxe needed to mine Chlorophyte and any remaining Hardmode ores you haven't accessed yet.

He also drops exactly one of seven class-specific weapons at 14.29% each: Possessed Hatchet, Sun Stone or Eye of the Golem (accessory-type drops), Heat Ray, Staff of Earth, Stynger, and Golem Fist.

Defeating Golem for the first time causes four Cultists to begin spawning at the Dungeon entrance. Killing all four triggers the Lunatic Cultist fight — the gateway to the Celestial Pillars and Moon Lord, the final steps of Terraria's boss progression.

FAQ

What do I need to summon Golem?

You need to have defeated Plantera (her guaranteed drop, the Temple Key, opens the Lihzahrd Temple) and collected at least one Lihzahrd Power Cell from inside the Temple. Place the Power Cell into the Lihzahrd Altar at the end of the Temple to summon Golem immediately.

Which part of Golem should I destroy first?

Destroy both fists first — they deal consistent ranged punch damage in phase 1 and have less combined HP than the head or body. Once the fists are gone, focus the head; when the head detaches at 0 HP (starting phase 2), switch to the body, which is the only damageable target left.

Why can't I damage Golem's head in phase 2?

Once the head's HP reaches zero, it detaches from the body and becomes invincible while it floats around firing lasers. It cannot be killed at that point — you need to defeat the body instead to end the fight.

What happens if Golem leaves the Temple area?

Golem enrages if it or any of its parts move outside the Underground Jungle around the Temple — it jumps faster and fires eye lasers more frequently. Keep the entire fight inside the Temple's altar room to avoid this.

What does beating Golem unlock?

Golem's first defeat causes four Cultists to start spawning at the Dungeon entrance. Killing all four cultists triggers the Lunatic Cultist boss fight, which begins the Lunar Events — the final content gate before the four Celestial Pillars and Moon Lord.
