How to Make Potions in Terraria — Complete Alchemy Guide
Potions are one of the highest-impact things a Terraria player can invest time in — a well-stocked potion bar can be the difference between surviving a boss fight and losing your loot. This guide covers every crafting station, all seven herbs, the most essential buff potions, and how to squeeze extra value out of the Alchemy Table.
01Crafting Stations: Placed Bottle vs Alchemy Table
Every potion is crafted at a Placed Bottle or the Alchemy Table. Both share the same recipe list, but the Alchemy Table adds a powerful bonus.
A Placed Bottle is available from day one — just place any bottle (Glass Bottle, Mug, etc.) on flat furniture like a table or workbench.
The Alchemy Table is found in the Dungeon (post-Skeletron). Its key advantage: each ingredient has a 1-in-3 (33%) chance of not being consumed per craft, checked per ingredient. Over hundreds of potions this saves a massive amount of materials — upgrading to it should be a priority after Skeletron.
- Placed Bottle — available immediately; place any bottle on flat furniture.
- Alchemy Table — from the Dungeon; 33% chance per ingredient not consumed.
- Both share the same recipes; the Alchemy Table is strictly superior.
02Bottled Water: The Foundation of Most Potions
Most buff potions require Bottled Water. To make it, stand near any water source — a pond, the Ocean, or a single placed bucket of water — with Glass Bottles in your inventory, then craft a Glass Bottle + Water into Bottled Water.
Glass Bottles are bought from the Merchant or crafted from 2 Glass at a Furnace. A quick trick: place a Water Bucket inside your base next to your Placed Bottle so you can fill bottles without travelling. A few potions (like the Restoration Potion) skip Bottled Water, but assume it until you check a recipe.
03All Seven Herbs and How to Farm Them
Herbs are the backbone of alchemy. There are seven herbs, each found in a different biome and blooming under specific conditions. Grow them in Clay Pots or Planter Boxes (any seed grows in any box — the names are cosmetic), and harvest with a Staff of Regrowth for extra seeds.
- Daybloom — blooms during the day; Forest surface.
- Moonglow — blooms at night; Jungle.
- Blinkroot — blooms randomly; Underground/Caverns.
- Deathweed — blooms during a Blood Moon or Full Moon; Corruption/Crimson.
- Waterleaf — blooms during Rain; Desert.
- Fireblossom — blooms at dusk or in lava; the Underworld.
- Shiverthorn — blooms when fully grown (no time restriction); Snow biome.
Build a compact indoor herb farm next to your alchemy station and plan mass-harvests of Deathweed and Waterleaf around Blood Moons and rain respectively.
04Essential Buff Potions and Their Recipes
The most important buff potions to keep stocked (all use Bottled Water as a base unless noted):
- Healing Potion — restores HP; pre-Hardmode uses Bottled Water + Lesser Healing ingredients, upgraded to Greater Healing in Hardmode.
- Ironskin Potion — +8 defense for 5 min; Bottled Water + Daybloom + Iron Ore. One of the most cost-effective potions.
- Regeneration Potion — boosts health regen for 5 min; Bottled Water + Daybloom + Mushroom.
- Swiftness Potion — +25% movement speed for 8 min; Bottled Water + Cactus + Blinkroot.
- Endurance Potion — −10% damage taken for 4 min; Bottled Water + Blinkroot + Armored Cavefish.
- Lifeforce Potion — +20% max HP for several min (Hardmode); the best single survivability potion.
- Wrath / Rage Potion — +10% damage / +10% crit for 4 min (Corruption/Crimson fish respectively).
- Ammo Reservation / Summoning / Mana Potion — class-specific essentials.
05Flask Buffs from the Imbuing Station
Flasks are crafted at the Imbuing Station (bought from the Witch Doctor) and imbue your melee weapons and whips with an on-hit debuff. Each lasts 20 minutes, and only one flask buff can be active at a time:
- Flask of Fire — On Fire! debuff; Bottled Water + Hellstone (pre-Hardmode).
- Flask of Poison — Poisoned; Bottled Water + Stinger (pre-Hardmode).
- Flask of Ichor — reduces enemy defense by 15; Bottled Water + Ichor (Hardmode, Crimson).
- Flask of Cursed Flames — unquenchable fire (Hardmode, Corruption).
- Flask of Gold — extra coin drops; great for money farming.
Summoners benefit too: a whip hit procs the flask debuff and spreads it via minion tags. Flask of Ichor is usually the strongest Hardmode choice.
06Buff Station Setup and Stacking Tips
Potions stack additively as long as they grant different buff types. A typical pre-boss routine: Ironskin + Regeneration + Endurance + Lifeforce for defense, Wrath/Rage + Swiftness for offense and mobility, plus a class-specific potion.
Place a Campfire, Heart Lantern, and Sunflower near your alchemy station — they add passive regen that stacks with the Regeneration Potion.
- All different buff types stack — layer as many compatible potions as you can before big fights.
- Upgrade to the Alchemy Table ASAP after Skeletron for the ~33% ingredient savings.
- A Staff of Regrowth on herb farms yields extra plants and seeds and only harvests blooming plants.
- After death, the Potion Sickness debuff blocks Healing Potions for 60 seconds — keep Restoration Potions for early-game emergencies.
FAQ
What is the difference between a Placed Bottle and an Alchemy Table?
Both craft the same recipes, so anything available at one is available at the other. The Alchemy Table — found in the Dungeon after defeating Skeletron — gives each ingredient a 1-in-3 (33%) chance of not being consumed per craft, saving a lot of herbs and materials over time. The Placed Bottle is available from day one and is the starting point for all alchemy.
How do you get Bottled Water to make potions?
Stand near any water source — a pond, the Ocean, or even a single placed Water Bucket — with Glass Bottles in your inventory, and the crafting menu shows Bottled Water. Glass Bottles are bought from the Merchant or crafted from 2 Glass at a Furnace. Placing a Water Bucket next to your Placed Bottle lets you refill without leaving your crafting area.
What are the best potions to use before a boss fight?
The strongest survivability combination is Ironskin (+8 defense), Regeneration, Endurance (−10% damage taken), and Lifeforce (+20% max HP). Add Wrath or Rage for offense, plus class potions like Summoning, Ammo Reservation, or Mana Potion. In Hardmode, equip a Flask from the Imbuing Station for a persistent on-hit debuff.
Can herbs grow in any Planter Box?
Yes — any herb seed grows in any Planter Box regardless of its name or appearance; the biome-matching is purely cosmetic. What matters is each herb's bloom condition: Daybloom needs daylight, Moonglow nighttime, Waterleaf rain, Deathweed a Blood Moon or Full Moon, and so on. Meeting that condition is required for harvest, not the box type.
