How to Get Wings in Terraria — All Types & Progression

Updated July 20268 min readBy the HowToPlayHub team

Wings are the most important mobility accessory in Terraria, unlocking true flight and completely changing how you explore and fight. Most wings are Hardmode-only, requiring Souls of Flight from Wyverns, but one pair can be found before Hardmode ever begins. This guide covers every tier — from your first feathery pair to endgame Lunar Wings.

01The Only Pre-Hardmode Wings: Fledgling Wings

The Fledgling Wings are the sole exception to the Hardmode rule. They can be obtained before defeating the Wall of Flesh, making them valuable for early exploration and fall-damage prevention — even with modest stats (short flight time and 18 tiles of reach).

To find Floating Islands, build or mine upward past the cloud layer and look for stone platforms and Skyware furniture. Sky and Azure Crates from Hardmode sky fishing are another route to Fledgling Wings.

02The Foundation: Souls of Flight and Wyverns

Almost every craftable wing set uses Souls of Flight as its primary ingredient. These drop exclusively from Wyverns — long serpentine enemies that patrol the Space layer high above your world.

Wyverns only spawn in Hardmode, and only at high altitude (roughly the top portion of the map on the depth meter):

All craftable wings are made at a Mythril or Orichalcum Anvil.

03Early Hardmode Wings: Your First Pair

As soon as you can farm Wyverns, several options open up. The two easiest to craft are the Angel Wings and Demon Wings — identical in stats but themed to different evil biomes.

These early wings give roughly 1.67 seconds of flight. Two no-craft alternatives skip the Wyvern grind: the Witch Doctor sells Leaf Wings at night for 1 Platinum (after Queen Bee), and the Steampunker sells the Jetpack. Both are excellent early picks.

04Mid-Hardmode Wings: Mechanical Boss Tier

After the three mechanical bosses and Plantera, wings with longer flight times and unique effects open up:

  1. Frozen Wings — 20 Souls of Flight + 1 Ice Feather (from Ice Golems during a Blizzard).
  2. Bone Wings — 20 Souls of Flight + 5 Bone Feathers (from Necromancers in the post-Plantera Dungeon); about 2.17 s flight.
  3. Mothron Wings — from a Broken Bat Wing dropped by Mothron during a Solar Eclipse; about 2.50 s flight, no Souls of Flight required.
  4. Spooky Wings — 20 Souls of Flight + 20 Spooky Twig (Pumpkin Moon); about 2.50 s flight.

05Late-Game and Endgame Wings

Post-Golem and post-Lunatic Cultist, the best wings in the game become available, offering up to 3 seconds of flight and the highest speeds:

For pure endgame power, Solar and Stardust Wings share the top horizontal speed. Fishron Wings remain the best pre-Lunar option, especially for aquatic fights.

06Wing Progression Summary

The fastest logical path to flight at every milestone:

  1. Pre-Hardmode: search Floating Islands for Fledgling Wings.
  2. Early Hardmode: build a sky platform, farm Wyverns, and craft Angel, Demon, or Fairy Wings — or buy Leaf Wings from the Witch Doctor to skip the grind.
  3. Post-Plantera: farm Mothron during Solar Eclipses for Mothron Wings, or Pumpkin Moon for Spooky Wings.
  4. Post-Golem: challenge Duke Fishron for Fishron Wings — the single best upgrade before endgame.
  5. Post-Lunatic Cultist: collect Lunar fragments and craft your chosen Lunar Wing set at the Ancient Manipulator.

Wings occupy the dedicated wings accessory slot and do not replace your other slots. Combine them with mobility accessories like the Terraspark Boots and Master Ninja Gear for a complete build.

FAQ

Can you get wings before Hardmode in Terraria?

Yes — Fledgling Wings are the only pre-Hardmode wings. They have a small chance to appear in Skyware Chests and Living Wood Chests on Floating Islands, as well as Sky Crates and Azure Crates. Journey Mode characters always start with a pair. Their flight time is short, but any flight is useful before the Wall of Flesh.

What do Wyverns drop and where do they spawn?

Wyverns drop 5–20 Souls of Flight, the core crafting material for most Hardmode wings. They spawn in the Space layer at high altitude exclusively in Hardmode. The exact threshold depends on world size, and they will not spawn near town NPCs or inside Corruption/Crimson zones.

What are the best wings in Terraria?

The best pre-Lunar wings are Fishron Wings (3-second flight, liquid movement bonus, from Duke Fishron). Among endgame Lunar Wings, Solar Wings and Stardust Wings tie for the highest horizontal speed with full 3-second flight. The choice between Lunar wing types is largely personal — all four are very close in performance.

Do all wings require Souls of Flight to craft?

Most craftable wings do, but there are important exceptions. Leaf Wings are bought from the Witch Doctor at night, Mothron Wings drop from Mothron during Solar Eclipses with no crafting, and all four Lunar Wing sets use Luminite Bars and Lunar Fragments instead of Souls of Flight.
