Terraria NPC Happiness and Pylons Guide

Updated July 20268 min readBy the HowToPlayHub team

Since Journey's End (1.4), every town NPC has a preferred biome and a set of neighbors they like or dislike. Keep them happy and shop prices drop — and any vendor NPC will sell you a Pylon to fast-travel as long as a neighbor lives nearby (as of 1.4.5, no happiness threshold required). This guide covers every mechanic and gives practical colony layouts to get all ten Pylons as efficiently as possible.

01How the Happiness System Works

Each NPC's happiness is expressed as a price modifier, defaulting to 100%. Three factors push it up or down: the biome the NPC is housed in, the neighbors near them, and overcrowding. The factors multiply together, so a good biome plus a liked neighbor stacks better than either alone.

As of version 1.4.5, Pylons no longer require a happiness threshold. Any vendor NPC (except the Tavernkeep) sells their biome's Pylon as long as at least one other NPC lives nearby — regardless of price modifier. Maximising happiness still lowers shop prices, but it is no longer a prerequisite for the Pylon network.

02Overcrowding: The Hidden Penalty

Overcrowding is the most misunderstood part of the system. Two distance rings matter:

The takeaway: build small pods of 2–3 NPCs and space each pod well away from others. A single mega-city crammed with all your NPCs is the worst possible layout — everyone becomes unhappy and no one sells Pylons.

03Pylon Types and How to Use Them

There are ten biome Pylons (including two added in 1.4.5) plus a Universal option. Each must be placed inside its matching biome and needs at least 2 housed NPCs nearby to stay active. Once two Pylons are placed, they form the Pylon Network — interact with any Pylon to teleport to any other active one.

As of 1.4.5, most Pylon usage restrictions during boss fights and events have been lifted — Pylons can now be used in most situations. Only a handful of specific scenarios still prevent teleportation.

04Biome Preferences Quick Reference

Every NPC has one liked (or loved) biome and one disliked biome. Common groupings (always cross-check the wiki, since patches adjust preferences):

05Recommended Colony Pairings

These pairings combine biome match and mutual neighbor bonuses to push both NPCs below 85%. Limit each location to 2–3 NPCs:

  1. Forest — Zoologist + Golfer (add the Merchant as a third for the Forest Pylon).
  2. Snow — Mechanic + Tax Collector (the Princess works as a flexible third).
  3. Desert — Arms Dealer + Steampunker.
  4. Jungle — Witch Doctor + Dryad.
  5. Cavern — Demolitionist + Goblin Tinkerer.
  6. Mushroom — Truffle + a second NPC who likes the biome.
  7. Hallow — Wizard + Nurse (add the Princess post-Moon Lord).
  8. Ocean — Angler + Pirate.

06Building Your Pylon Network Step by Step

A logical build order that follows natural progression:

  1. Early pre-Hardmode: prioritise the Forest Pylon — least effort, a home-base anchor.
  2. Before the Wall of Flesh: establish the Jungle Pylon (fast herb runs) and the Snow Pylon.
  3. Post-Wall of Flesh: build the Desert and Cavern Pylons.
  4. Once Hallow spreads: relocate the Wizard and Nurse into a Hallow colony.
  5. Ocean: place the Angler and Pirate at one shore — one world, one Pylon.
  6. Mushroom (late game): grow a surface Glowing Mushroom biome and move Truffle in.
  7. Underworld (1.4.5): house any NPC in The Underworld for easy lava-layer access.
  8. Aether (1.4.5): house any NPC near the Shimmer lake (Aether biome, Cavern layer) — great for late-game shimmer use.
  9. Final unlock: the Universal Pylon from a completed Bestiary.

Space each colony at least 120 tiles from the next to preserve the solitude bonus, and connect surface Pylons to underground colonies with ropes or a hellevator.

FAQ

What is the minimum happiness needed to buy a Pylon?

An NPC must be selling at 85% or less of base price before their Pylon appears. A single liked biome (×0.94) plus a single liked neighbor (×0.94) multiplies to roughly 88% — close but not quite enough on its own. Adding a second liked neighbor, a loved biome, or removing a disliked companion is usually enough to cross the threshold.

Can a Pylon stay active if the NPCs move away or die?

A Pylon needs at least 2 living, housed NPCs within a rectangle centered on it to remain usable. If those NPCs die or their housing is destroyed, the Pylon deactivates until the condition is met again. The NPCs can wander outside the rectangle during the day — only their housing needs to be within range.

Does the Princess really have no biome preference?

Correct. The Princess (unlocked post-Moon Lord) has no liked or disliked biome, so she gets neither bonus nor penalty from location. What makes her powerful is that every other NPC considers her a liked neighbor, giving them a discount just for living near her — the ideal flexible third NPC for any colony.

How many NPCs can share a colony without triggering overcrowding?

Limit each tight cluster (within 25 tiles) to 3 NPCs maximum, including Town Pets. Two-NPC colonies are the most reliable: both avoid inner-ring crowding entirely and the solitude bonus is easy to maintain if the next colony is built far enough away.
