Slay the Spire 2 Defect Build Guide Orbs, Focus & Glass Cannon

Updated August 202610 min readBy the HowToPlayHub team

The Defect returns in Slay the Spire 2 as the series' combat automaton: 75 base HP, the Cracked Core starter relic (channels 1 Lightning Orb at the start of every combat), and a play pattern built around Orbs — persistent effects that keep generating value every turn without needing a card play. She's the most mechanically dense of the returning cast, and Slay the Spire 2 gives her a genuinely new tool: a fifth Orb type, Glass, that fixes the original game's biggest Defect weakness — multi-enemy fights. This guide covers the Focus mechanic, all five Orb types, the three strongest archetypes, and the relics worth prioritising.

01Defect Unique Mechanics

Everything about the Defect flows from two systems: Orbs and Focus.

The five Orb types:

02Archetype 1: Orb & Focus (the reliable default)

Stack Focus, then let a small rotation of Lightning and Frost Orbs generate value every single turn without needing to play new cards. This is the most consistent Defect archetype and the one to default to when a run doesn't offer a strong alternative.

Core cards:

Prioritise Frost Orbs on Elite and boss turns where you expect heavy incoming damage, and lean Lightning when you're racing down a weaker enemy. Because Focus boosts both equally, you can rebalance your Orb mix mid-fight without losing value — that flexibility is this archetype's biggest strength over Claw or Glass Cannon.

03Archetype 2: Glass Cannon (new to Slay the Spire 2)

Channel and Evoke Glass Orbs rapidly to shred multi-enemy rooms — something the original game's Defect struggled with, since Lightning and Dark both single-target. This is the strongest pick against Act 2's crowded mob rooms and any Elite that summons adds.

04Archetype 3: Claw (the aggressive alternative)

Claw is a 0-cost Attack that deals damage scaling with how many times any copy of Claw has been played so far this combat. Multiple copies of Claw plus cards that let you replay it (All for One, Feral) create a snowballing damage engine independent of Orbs entirely.

FAQ

What is the best Defect build in Slay the Spire 2?

Orb & Focus is the most consistent default — stacking permanent Focus from Defragment multiplies the value of every Lightning and Frost Orb you run, and it holds up in both single-target and multi-enemy fights. Glass Cannon (built around the new Glass Orb) is the strongest pick specifically against mob-heavy rooms and Elites that summon adds. Claw is viable but generally considered the weakest of the three at equal investment, and is best treated as a build you fall into when a run offers strong Claw payoffs rather than one you force.

How does Focus work for the Defect in Slay the Spire 2?

Focus adds +1 to the Passive and Evoke value of every Orb type except Plasma, for each point of Focus you have. Defragment grants permanent Focus and is the single highest-priority card for most Defect decks, since it multiplies the value of every Orb you're already running rather than adding a one-off effect.

What is the Glass Orb in Slay the Spire 2?

Glass is a new Orb type added in Slay the Spire 2, not present in the original game. Its Passive effect deals damage to every enemy on the field, decreasing by 1 each turn it's slotted; its Evoke effect deals a burst of AoE damage to all enemies based on its current Passive value. It's the Defect's main answer to multi-enemy rooms, which was a notable weakness for the character in the first game.

What is the Defect's starting relic in Slay the Spire 2?

Cracked Core, which channels 1 Lightning Orb at the start of every combat. Her starting deck also includes Zap (channel 1 Lightning) and Dualcast (Evoke your rightmost Orb twice), and she begins each combat with 3 Orb slots.

How many Orb types does the Defect have in Slay the Spire 2?

Five: Lightning (damage), Frost (Block), Dark (damage that grows the longer it's slotted before being Evoked), Plasma (Energy), and the new Glass (AoE damage to all enemies). The original Slay the Spire only had the first four — Glass is new to the sequel.

Is the Defect good for beginners in Slay the Spire 2?

Not as a first character. Her Orb-slot management, the Passive/Evoke distinction, and Focus scaling take longer to click than the more straightforward Ironclad, who has more HP, heals after every combat, and a simpler card pool. Most guides recommend starting with the Ironclad and coming back to the Defect once you've won at least one run.
