Slay the Spire 2 Silent Build Guide Poison, Shivs & Discard

Updated August 202610 min readBy the HowToPlayHub team

The Silent returns in Slay the Spire 2 with her sharp, scheming identity intact: 70 base HP, the Ring of the Snake starter relic (draw 2 extra cards on turn 1 of every combat), and a card pool that punishes enemies through accumulated venom, a hail of 0-cost Shivs, or a discard engine that generates resources faster than any other character. She has the lowest HP of the three returning characters, zero post-combat healing, and absolutely rewards knowing what you want from each card pick. This guide covers all three archetypes, the key cards that define each, and the relics worth hunting.

01Silent Unique Mechanics

Before committing to an archetype, understand what separates the Silent from the other four characters:

The Silent does not mix archetypes as comfortably as the Necrobinder does. A Poison build wants almost exclusively poison sources and Block, a Shiv build lives and dies on Accuracy, and a Discard build needs its triggers set up precisely. Drift off-theme and your deck becomes unfocused. That said, every build benefits from at least one source of Block (Blur, Escape Plan, Footwork) — the Silent's 70 HP punishes taking avoidable hits.

02Archetype 1: Poison Build

The Poison build front-loads venom onto enemies in the first couple of turns, then stalls with Block while the DoT closes out the fight. It shines in long single-target fights — bosses and Elites — because Poison's damage per turn is not mitigated by enemy Block. The cornerstone is the Catalyst card.

Core Poison cards:

Patch v0.110.0 (July 31, 2026) reworked the Silent's wider Poison toolkit — worth knowing even though the cornerstone cards above are untouched. Mirage (Skill) gains Block equal to the combined Poison stacks on all enemies. In v0.110.0 it briefly lost its Exhaust, but patch v0.111.0 (August 13, 2026) reverted that change: Mirage Exhausts again after use, and upgrading it now removes the Exhaust instead of lowering its cost. Treat it as a single big Block swing timed for your highest Poison count, not a repeatable source. Haze (Skill) dropped from 3 Energy to 2, lost its Sly keyword (which let it play for free when discarded), and now also applies Weak alongside its existing all-enemies Poison, making it a useful AoE poison-plus-Weak opener in mob rooms. Outbreak was reclassified from a 1-Energy Uncommon Power into a 3-Energy Rare Skill that applies a large burst of Poison to every enemy immediately. None of these three replace Deadly Poison, Catalyst, or Noxious Fumes as the build's core.

How to pilot the Poison build in combat:

  1. Turn 1: Use Ring of the Snake to find your poison applicators. Apply as much Poison as possible — ideally Deadly Poison plus Noxious Fumes.
  2. Turn 2: Play Catalyst to double (or triple) the Poison stacks. Then Block for the rest of the turn.
  3. Turns 3+: Stall with Block (Blur, Footwork, Clash doesn't apply here — use Dodge and Roll, Escape Plan) while the Poison ticks down the enemy's HP.
  4. Watch the enemy's attack patterns — if they have a low HP total and Poison will kill them before they act again, you can skip Block and spend the Energy on another Catalyst or refilling Poison.

The Poison build's key weakness is early-run Act 1 enemies who die too quickly for poison to accumulate meaningfully. In the early rooms, play Poison normally and close fights with direct damage. Catalyst only shines when you have at least 5–6 stacks active.

03Archetype 2: Shiv Build

The Shiv build generates a flood of 0-cost Attack cards mid-combat and unleashes them in one or two turns for burst damage. Its ceiling is the highest of the three Silent archetypes because Shivs hit for 4 each at base — but with Accuracy stacked, each Shiv quickly reaches 8, 12, or 16 damage, all for 0 Energy.

04Archetype 3: Discard Engine

The Discard build is the most unusual of the three: instead of dealing damage directly, it constructs an engine from cards that trigger when discarded — generating Energy (Tactician) or drawing more cards (Reflex) — then fuels that engine with cards that force discards. The payoff is that each discard trigger effectively converts excess cards into resources, letting you play far more of your deck each combat than any other character.

Core Discard cards:

The Discard build is the hardest to pilot because it requires planning discards deliberately rather than reacting to the board state. The reward is a run that churns through the entire deck in two or three turns and generates more resources than any straightforward build. When it clicks, it becomes nearly unstoppable — especially in Act 3 boss fights where the extended fight length gives the engine time to generate enormous returns.

05Key Relics for the Silent

The Silent benefits from both universal relics and a set of character-specific ones that directly amplify her mechanics:

FAQ

What is the best Silent build in Slay the Spire 2?

The Poison build (Deadly Poison + Catalyst) is generally considered the most reliable for consistent wins because it deals guaranteed unblockable damage — bosses with high Block cannot negate it. The Shiv build has the highest damage ceiling but requires Accuracy to be functional. The Discard build is the strongest in experienced hands but is the hardest to set up. For your first few Silent runs, start with Poison.

How does Poison work in Slay the Spire 2?

Poison is a stacking debuff. When an enemy has Poison stacks, it loses that much HP at the start of its own turn, then loses 1 stack. Poison damage is unblockable — the enemy cannot reduce it with Block. The key interaction is Catalyst, which doubles (or triples when upgraded) the current Poison stack count, dramatically accelerating how much unblockable damage the enemy takes per turn.

How does Catalyst work in Slay the Spire 2?

Catalyst is a Skill (1 Energy, Exhaust) that doubles the Poison stacks on the target enemy. If the enemy has 7 Poison (from upgraded Deadly Poison+), Catalyst turns that into 14 — meaning the enemy loses 14 HP at the start of its next turn, then 13, then 12, and so on. Upgraded Catalyst triples the stacks instead. Because it Exhausts, you can only play it once per combat from your deck (without specific relics), so you want to play it when the enemy has as many stacks as possible.

What are Shivs in Slay the Spire 2?

Shivs are 0-cost Attack cards that the Silent generates mid-combat through specific card effects — they are not in your starting deck. Cards like Blade Dance (add 3 Shivs to hand) and Cloak and Dagger (gain Block and add 1 Shiv) create them. Each Shiv deals 4 base damage and Exhausts after use. The Power card Accuracy adds +4 damage per Shiv and stacks with multiple copies, making a burst of Shivs enormously damaging once Accuracy is in play.

What is the Silent's starter relic in Slay the Spire 2?

The Silent's starter relic is Ring of the Snake, which causes you to draw 2 additional cards at the start of the first turn of each combat — giving you a 7-card opening hand instead of the standard 5. This is the best starter relic in the game for finding your combo pieces quickly, and it directly feeds all three Silent archetypes by making key cards like Catalyst, Accuracy, or Tactician available on turn 1.

Is the Silent good for beginners in Slay the Spire 2?

The Silent is not ideal as a first character. Her 70 HP base (lowest of the three returning characters), lack of post-combat healing, and dependence on building specific synergies make her punishing for players still learning how map navigation, Elite timing, and card selection work. Start with the Ironclad, who has 80 HP, heals after every combat, and a more forgiving card pool. Return to the Silent after you've won a run or two — you'll appreciate her tools much more with that foundation.

How many characters does the Silent have in Slay the Spire 2?

The Silent is a single playable character in Slay the Spire 2 — she does not have subclasses or variants. However, she has three distinct play styles within her card pool: Poison (applied DoT via Deadly Poison and Catalyst), Shivs (burst of 0-cost Attack cards amplified by Accuracy), and Discard (resource generation from cards that trigger on discard). Depending on what the run offers, you will lean into one of these archetypes.
