Slay the Spire 2 Ascension Guide All 10 Levels Explained
Ascension is Slay the Spire 2's built-in difficulty ladder: once you've beaten the game with a character, you can raise that character's Ascension level to add tougher, cumulative modifiers to every future run. It's the game's answer to "I beat it, now what?" — and it's also where the real depth of deck-building shows up, since easy answers stop working. This guide covers how to unlock it and what each of the 10 levels does.
01What Ascension Is and How to Unlock It
Ascension only becomes available after you win a full run (beat the Act 3 boss) with a given character. Beating a run at your current Ascension level unlocks the next level for that same character — progress is tracked per character, not account-wide, so your Ironclad and your Silent can sit at different Ascension levels.
You choose your Ascension level from the run-setup screen before you start a climb, and you can always start a fresh run at Ascension 0 (no modifiers) even after unlocking higher levels — Ascension is opt-in difficulty, not a ratchet you're forced to climb.
02How Ascension Modifiers Stack
Every Ascension level from 1 to 10 is cumulative: climbing to Ascension 5 means your run has the Ascension 1 through 5 modifiers active all at once, not just level 5's effect on its own. This is the single most important thing to understand — the jump from Ascension 1 to Ascension 10 is far larger than "10 separate small changes" because they all compound on the same run.
03All 10 Ascension Levels
Community trackers agree closely on the effect of each level; naming varies slightly between sources; where they diverge on an exact number, this table sticks to the effect both sources describe rather than guessing at the precise figure.
- Level 1 — Swarming Elites: Elite enemies appear noticeably more often on the map, giving you more relic opportunities but more forced fights.
- Level 2 — Weary Traveler: Rest sites (campfires) heal less of your missing HP than normal, so resting is a weaker safety net.
- Level 3 — Poverty: Enemies and treasure chests drop 25% less gold, slowing down shop purchases and card removals.
- Level 4 — Tight Belt: You start each run with one fewer potion slot, cutting into your emergency resources for Elites and bosses.
- Level 5 — Ascender's Bane: Every run now begins with a curse card already in your deck, diluting your draws from turn one.
- Level 6 — Inflation: Removing cards at the Merchant costs more — 100 gold for the first removal, rising by 50 gold each time after that (patched in from the earlier "Gloom" version, which cut rest sites instead).
- Level 7 — Scarcity: Rare and upgraded cards show up less often in your reward pools, making it harder to find your key pieces.
- Level 8 — Tough Enemies: Enemies across all three Acts have more HP, so fights run longer and reward sustained damage over burst.
- Level 9 — Deadly Enemies: Enemies hit harder on top of the extra HP from Level 8, punishing weak Block or defensive lines.
- Level 10 — Double Boss: The Act 3 boss fight becomes two consecutive boss encounters back-to-back, with no rest in between — the hardest single modifier in the list.
04How to Approach Higher Ascensions
- Climb one level at a time. Because modifiers stack, jumping straight to a high Ascension throws several compounding penalties at you before you've adapted to any of them.
- Prioritize card removal earlier once Poverty (3) is active. With less gold coming in, you'll want to be more selective about which shop visits you spend on removals versus cards.
- Treat Ascender's Bane (5) as a deck-building constraint, not an emergency. The curse card is annoying but rarely run-ending on its own — don't panic-remove it at the cost of a more useful shop purchase early on.
- Once Tough and Deadly Enemies (8–9) are both active, favor sustain over glass-cannon builds. Longer fights with harder-hitting enemies punish decks with no Block or healing plan.
- Save potions for Elites and bosses at Tight Belt (4) and above. With one fewer slot, using a potion on a routine monster fight is a bigger opportunity cost than at Ascension 0.
- Ascension 10 (Double Boss) is the real test. Go in with your deck fully upgraded and at least one potion in reserve — you don't get a rest site between the two bosses.
FAQ
How do I unlock Ascension in Slay the Spire 2?
Win a full run (beat the Act 3 boss) with a character at Ascension 0. That unlocks Ascension 1 for that character. Beating a run at a given Ascension level unlocks the next level for the same character; progress is tracked per character, not account-wide.
How many Ascension levels are there in Slay the Spire 2?
10. Each level adds a new modifier on top of all the previous ones, since Ascension effects are cumulative rather than standalone.
What is the hardest Ascension level in Slay the Spire 2?
Ascension 10, Double Boss, which makes you fight two bosses back-to-back at the end of Act 3 with no rest site between them — on top of every modifier from levels 1 through 9 already being active.
Do Ascension levels stack in Slay the Spire 2?
Yes. Climbing to a given Ascension level keeps every lower level's modifier active as well, so Ascension 8 includes the effects of levels 1 through 8 simultaneously, not just level 8 on its own.
Is Ascension progress shared between characters?
No. Ascension level is tracked separately for each of the five characters, so you can be at a high Ascension with one character while still climbing from 0 with another.
Can I choose a lower Ascension level after unlocking a higher one?
Yes. Unlocking a higher Ascension level doesn't force you to play at it — you can start any run from Ascension 0 up to your current unlocked maximum from the run-setup screen.
