Halo: Campaign Evolved Skulls & Campaign Remix Explained
Skulls have been a Halo tradition since the original Combat Evolved, and Campaign Evolved goes bigger than any game in the series with 42 of them — more challenge modifiers, more chaos-inducing joke Skulls, and a new replay mode built specifically around stacking them together. Here's what's confirmed about how they work, what they do, and how to unlock Campaign Remix.
Halo: Campaign Evolved has 42 total Skulls: 26 legacy Skulls carried over from Combat Evolved Anniversary and the Master Chief Collection, plus 16 brand-new ones. 39 are hidden as physical pickups across the campaign's 13 missions (three per original mission, nine across the new Operation: Meteorite missions) — find one and it unlocks as a toggleable modifier for future playthroughs. Collect just two Skulls and you unlock Campaign Remix, a replay mode that randomizes enemies, weapon placements, and visibility on missions you've already beaten.
01How Many Skulls Are There, and Where Do They Come From
- 42 Skulls total — the most of any Halo game to date.
- 26 legacy Skulls pulled from Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary and Halo: The Master Chief Collection, including familiar names like Black Eye, Mythic, Famine, Catch, Boom, Cowbell, Grunt Funeral, Grunt Birthday Party, Bandana, Piñata, IWHBYD, and Acrophobia.
- 16 new Skulls made specifically for Campaign Evolved, including ones built around a 'classically evolved' feel — Speed Limit (disables sprint), Hip Fire (removes aim-down-sights), Magnified (60-round Assault Rifle magazine), and Endurance Spec (makes UNSC vehicles indestructible) — plus other new effects such as Perspective, Give and Take, Floor is Lava, and Pop.
02Where Skulls Are Hidden
- 39 Skulls are physical pickups hidden across the campaign's 13 missions — three per each of the 10 original missions, and nine spread across the three Operation: Meteorite prequel missions.
- Finding and picking one up unlocks it permanently as a toggleable modifier you can turn on for any future playthrough — you don't need to keep finding the same one twice.
- The remaining Skulls beyond the 39 hidden pickups are tied to Campaign Remix's default set rather than being found in the world (see below).
03What Skulls Actually Do
Skulls fall into rough categories depending on what kind of run you're after:
- Challenge Skulls make the campaign harder — things like tougher enemies, reduced resources, or removed HUD elements. This is the classic 'Skull run' style Halo veterans use for harder replays.
- Arcade-style Skulls are joke or chaos modifiers meant for fun, silly runs rather than difficulty — comedic enemy dialogue, altered enemy behavior, or visual gags.
- New 'classically evolved' Skulls intentionally strip back Campaign Evolved's modern quality-of-life features (like aim-down-sights or sprint) to make the remake feel closer to the original 2001 game's combat.
- One confirmed new Skull switches the entire campaign to a third-person perspective — a first for a mainline Halo campaign.
04Campaign Remix Mode
- Unlocks after collecting just two Skulls (Halo Studios originally set this at three, then lowered it to two in a June 2026 update).
- Lets you replay missions you've already completed with randomized enemy placements, remixed weapon pickups, and new visibility effects layered on top.
- Three Skulls are on by default in Remix runs: Adaptation (randomizes which enemy faction you fight), Reload (randomizes weapon placement), and Armistice (enemy factions won't fight each other).
- Optional visibility modifiers include Spore Visibility (a heavy Flood-style fog effect) and Nightvision (an always-on night-vision filter) for a very different look on a mission you've already cleared.
- Because it only needs two Skulls, you can realistically unlock Campaign Remix within your first couple of missions if you're actively searching for pickups.
FAQ
How many Skulls are in Halo: Campaign Evolved?

Collect any two Skulls. Halo Studios originally required three but lowered the requirement to two in a June 2026 update, making Remix mode unlockable within your first couple of missions if you're hunting for pickups.
What is Campaign Remix mode?

Can you play Halo: Campaign Evolved in third person?
Yes — one of the new Skulls switches the entire campaign to a third-person camera, which is new for a mainline Halo campaign. Like other Skulls, you need to find and collect it first before you can toggle it on.
