Halo: Campaign Evolved Co-op Guide — Crossplay & Cross-Progression
This is the first time the Combat Evolved campaign has supported proper modern co-op, and Halo Studios built it around crossplay from the ground up. Here's exactly how many players you can run with, which platforms can play together, what happens to your progress if you switch devices, and where split-screen still works.
Halo: Campaign Evolved supports up to 4-player online co-op with drop-in/drop-out, full crossplay across Xbox, PC, and PlayStation 5, and cross-progression so your campaign saves and unlocks follow your account between platforms. Split-screen co-op (2 players) is available on Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5 only — PC players need online co-op — and two split-screen players can combine with two more players online for a full squad of four.
01How Many Players & Drop-In/Drop-Out
- Up to 4 players can play the full campaign together online — a first for this specific campaign, which previously topped out at 2-player co-op in earlier collections.
- Drop-in/drop-out is supported, so a friend can join your session mid-mission or leave without ending the game for everyone else.
- Progress made in a co-op session applies to the host's save in the usual Halo way — check who's hosting before starting a mission if you care about which save file records your progress.
02Crossplay Across Every Platform
- Full crossplay is supported across Xbox Series X|S, PC (Steam and Windows/Microsoft Store), and PlayStation 5 — your squad doesn't need to be on the same platform.
- This means a PS5 player, an Xbox player, and two PC players can all be in the same 4-player campaign session together.
- Crossplay is on by default for campaign co-op sessions; there's no separate multiplayer mode to configure it in, since this is purely campaign co-op rather than competitive matchmaking.
03Cross-Progression
- Your campaign progress, unlocks, and achievements sync across platforms as long as you're signed into the same account.
- That means you can start a mission on PS5, pick the same save back up on Xbox Series X, and continue on PC later without losing progress.
- This is separate from crossplay — cross-progression is about your own save following you, while crossplay is about playing with others regardless of their platform.
04Split-Screen: Console Only
- Split-screen co-op is available on Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5, supporting 2 players on one console.
- PC does not support split-screen — PC players need to play co-op online, either with each other or with console players via crossplay.
- You can combine local and online co-op: two friends playing split-screen on one console (say, PS5) can team up with two more players online — including PC players — for a full 4-player squad.
FAQ
How many players can play Halo: Campaign Evolved co-op?
Up to 4 players online, with drop-in/drop-out support so people can join or leave mid-mission. Split-screen on Xbox Series X|S or PlayStation 5 supports 2 players locally, and those two can team up with two more players online for a full 4-player squad.
Does Halo: Campaign Evolved have crossplay?
Yes, full crossplay across Xbox Series X|S, PC (Steam/Windows), and PlayStation 5. A group can mix platforms freely in the same co-op campaign session — it doesn't require everyone to own the same console.
Does Halo: Campaign Evolved have cross-progression?
Yes. Your campaign progress, unlocks, and achievements sync across platforms as long as you sign in with the same account, so you can move between Xbox, PC, and PlayStation 5 and keep the same save.
Can you play split-screen co-op in Halo: Campaign Evolved?
Split-screen is supported on Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5 for 2 local players. PC does not support split-screen — PC players need to join co-op sessions online instead.
Is Halo: Campaign Evolved co-op only online, or can you play solo?
You can play the entire campaign solo. Co-op (online or split-screen on consoles) is optional and supports up to 4 players with drop-in/drop-out, but nothing requires a group to progress through the story.
