Halo: Campaign Evolved Beginner's Guide — Everything to Know Before You Play
Halo: Campaign Evolved is Halo Studios' full remake of the game that started the franchise, rebuilt in Unreal Engine 5 with new missions, weapons, and systems layered on top of the original story. Whether you're a returning fan or have never touched a Halo game, here's everything worth knowing before launch — what it actually is, when it releases, what's changed, and how to get the most out of it on day one.
Halo: Campaign Evolved is Halo Studios' ground-up Unreal Engine 5 remake of 2001's Halo: Combat Evolved, launching July 28, 2026 (early access July 23 for Premium/Collector's Edition owners) on Xbox Series X|S, PC/Steam, and PlayStation 5. It includes all 10 original missions plus a new three-mission prequel arc, Operation: Meteorite, nine additional weapons, first-time vehicle hijacking, 42 collectible Skulls, and 4-player online co-op with full crossplay. You do not need to have played the original first.
01What Halo: Campaign Evolved Actually Is
It's easy to assume this is just a visual remaster, but it's a ground-up remake:
- Built in Unreal Engine 5 by Halo Studios (formerly 343 Industries), not a simple resolution/texture upscale of the 2001 original.
- All 10 original campaign missions from Halo: Combat Evolved are rebuilt with reworked visuals, cinematics, and level layouts, telling the complete story of the Pillar of Autumn's crash-landing on Installation 04.
- A brand-new three-mission prequel arc called Operation: Meteorite, set one year before the original story and developed with Halo novelist Troy Denning. It follows Master Chief and Sergeant Johnson on a clandestine UNSC operation aboard a Covenant research vessel, and includes new space-combat sequences.
- It does not include the classic competitive multiplayer from the 2001 release — that still lives in Halo Infinite and Halo: The Master Chief Collection. Campaign Evolved is a single connected campaign experience, playable solo or in co-op.
02Release Date, Platforms & Early Access
- Full release: July 28, 2026, 8 AM PDT.
- Early access: July 23, 2026 — five days early, available only to Digital Premium Edition and Collector's Edition purchasers.
- Platforms: Xbox Series X|S, PC (Steam and Windows/Microsoft Store), PlayStation 5 — the first mainline Halo campaign to launch on PlayStation — plus Xbox Cloud Gaming.
- Game Pass: available day one to Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass subscribers on July 28, 2026, with no separate purchase needed.
- Dates and availability can shift before launch, so cross-check the official Halo Waypoint site if you're close to the release window.
03What's New Compared to the Original 2001 Campaign
On top of rebuilt visuals and audio, Campaign Evolved adds real gameplay changes:
- Nine additional weapons pulled from across the Halo series and folded into the campaign — Halo Studios has confirmed the Energy Sword, Battle Rifle, Needle Rifle, and Brute Plasma Rifle are playable for the first time in these missions, with more still to be detailed before launch.
- Vehicle hijacking makes its debut in this campaign for the first time, plus destructible Covenant vehicles.
- New enemy variants, including Brute Berserkers, not present in the original 2001 encounter design.
- 42 collectible Skulls — 26 legacy Skulls pulled from Combat Evolved Anniversary and the Master Chief Collection, plus 16 new ones — that modify difficulty or add gameplay twists once found (see our dedicated Skulls and Campaign Remix guide).
- Campaign Remix, an optional replay mode unlocked by collecting Skulls that randomizes enemies, weapon placements, and visibility effects on missions you've already finished.
04Co-op, Crossplay & Cross-Progression
For the first time, the Combat Evolved campaign supports proper modern co-op:
- Up to 4 players online, with drop-in/drop-out support so friends can join or leave mid-mission.
- Full crossplay across Xbox, PC, and PlayStation 5 — your squad doesn't need to match platforms.
- Cross-progression keeps your campaign progress, unlocks, and achievements synced if you switch platforms on the same account.
- Split-screen is available on Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5 only (not PC), and two split-screen players can team up with two more players online for a full 4-player squad.
- See our full co-op and crossplay guide for the details.
05Which Edition Should You Buy
There are three editions — Standard ($49.99), Digital Premium ($69.99), and a physical Collector's Edition ($199.99, sold out as of early June 2026). Every edition includes the Foundry Armory Pack pre-order bonus (classic 2001-style armor and Assault Rifle skins). Premium adds extra armor/weapon skins, a digital artbook, and a Troy Denning short story, plus the five days of early access. If you're only after the campaign itself, Standard covers everything you need — the extras in Premium are cosmetic and bonus reading, not gameplay content. Full breakdown in our editions and pre-order guide.
06Do You Need to Play the Original Halo First?
No. Campaign Evolved retells the complete story of Master Chief's fight for Installation 04 from the ground up, and the new Operation: Meteorite missions are specifically positioned as an on-ramp before the classic campaign levels begin. If you're brand new to Halo, this is a reasonable place to start; if you're returning, expect the same core story beats with new weapons, enemies, and optional Skull modifiers layered in.
FAQ
Is Halo: Campaign Evolved a remaster or a full remake?
It's a full remake built in Unreal Engine 5 by Halo Studios, not a visual upscale. It rebuilds all 10 original Halo: Combat Evolved missions and adds a new three-mission prequel arc, Operation: Meteorite, plus nine additional weapons, vehicle hijacking, new enemy variants, and 42 collectible Skulls.
When does Halo: Campaign Evolved release?
It launches July 28, 2026, with early access starting July 23, 2026 for anyone who buys the Digital Premium Edition or the (sold-out) Collector's Edition. It's available on Xbox Series X|S, PC (Steam/Windows), PlayStation 5, and day one on Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass.
Does Halo: Campaign Evolved have multiplayer?
It does not include classic competitive multiplayer — that stays in Halo Infinite and Halo: The Master Chief Collection. What it does have is full campaign co-op for up to 4 players online with crossplay and cross-progression, plus split-screen on consoles.
Do I need to have played the original Halo: Combat Evolved first?
No. Campaign Evolved tells the complete story on its own, and the new Operation: Meteorite prequel missions are designed to ease new players into the setting before the classic campaign levels start.
What platforms is Halo: Campaign Evolved on?
Xbox Series X|S, PC (Steam and Windows/Microsoft Store), and PlayStation 5 — the first time a mainline Halo campaign has released on PlayStation — plus Xbox Cloud Gaming and day-one Game Pass access.
