Quick answers

Do I need to know D&D rules to enjoy Baldur's Gate 3?

No prior D&D knowledge is needed. The game explains its core mechanics in context — ability checks, Armor Class, and action economy are all introduced naturally as you play. Knowing the basics of D&D 5e will help you make smarter decisions earlier, but first-timers regularly finish the game without ever opening a rulebook.

Which class is best for a first playthrough?

Fighter is the most recommended starting class for new players. It has the highest hit points among martial classes, simple resource management (no spell slots to track), and Action Surge gives you a powerful burst option without complicated setup. Paladin is a close second if you want some spellcasting alongside strong melee presence.

Can I respec my character if I pick the wrong class or abilities?

Yes. Once you reach the druid grove in Act 1 and rescue a character called Withers from a nearby crypt, he joins your camp and offers full character respecs for a small gold fee. You can respec your main character or any companion at any time, so no choice made during character creation is permanent.

How long is Baldur's Gate 3, and how many acts does it have?

BG3 has three acts. A focused playthrough skipping most side content takes roughly 60–80 hours; completionists routinely log 150–200 hours. Act 1 is the largest and most open, set in the wilderness around the Emerald Grove. Act 2 takes place in the shadow-cursed lands around Moonrise Towers, and Act 3 is set in Baldur's Gate city itself.
