BG3 Inventory Management & Fixing Encumbrance

Baldur's Gate 3 showers players with loot — and then punishes them for picking up too much. Understanding carry weight, companion inventories, the camp chest, and the Wares system turns a chaotic pile of swords and potions into a streamlined operation. The tips below cover every tool the game gives to keep the party light and the gold flowing.

01How Carry Weight and Encumbrance Work

Every character has a personal carry limit based on their Strength score — the higher the Strength, the more they can haul. Because each party member has their own separate weight pool, the effective party-wide capacity is the sum of all four active characters' limits.

Two encumbrance thresholds exist, and both carry movement penalties:

• Encumbered — triggered when carried weight exceeds roughly 80% of capacity. Jump distance is halved, cutting off certain platforming shortcuts.
• Heavily Encumbered / Overloaded — triggered near capacity. Movement speed drops drastically, climbing and jumping are disabled, and the character becomes a combat liability. The icon turns red and the movement bar shrinks visibly.

Encumbrance is per-character, not party-wide. A fully loaded Gale dragging himself down does not affect Lae'zel's movement — redistribute the weight instead of suffering the penalty.

02Use Companions as Extra Carry Slots

The fastest fix for encumbrance is spreading weight across the whole party. Open a companion's inventory and drag heavy items — armour sets, two-handed weapons, large camp supplies — onto characters with high Strength. Strength-focused companions such as Karlach, Lae'zel, and Minthara can comfortably act as pack mules without any movement penalty. Squishy casters like Gale or Wyll should carry only their own gear and consumables.

A few practical habits help:

• After a big fight, send heavy armour directly to a high-Strength companion rather than the active character.
• Split gold between multiple companions — gold has weight in BG3, and spreading it prevents one character tipping into Encumbered.
• Keep consumables (potions, scrolls, grenades) centralised on one character so they are always reachable in combat.

03The Camp Chest: Your Infinite Storage Solution

At every campsite, a chest sits near the central fire. This chest carries no weight limit and persists across every camp location — the same chest follows the party from Act 1 through Act 3. It is the single most important inventory tool in the game.

The key feature is Send to Camp. Right-click any item and choose Send to Camp to teleport it directly to the chest without visiting camp manually. Use this constantly for:

• Bulky armour and weapons looted mid-dungeon that you are not yet ready to sell.
• Rare crafting components and unique items saved for later quests.
• Excess camp supplies beyond what the active party can carry.
• Spare gear for companions who are not currently in the active party.

Items stored in the camp chest are accessible during Long Rest without travelling anywhere, and camp supplies used for resting are pulled from it automatically — there is no need to carry stacks of food in active inventories.

04The Wares System: Sell Junk in One Click

BG3 includes a dedicated mark-as-junk system called Wares. Any item flagged as a Ware gets a gold coin icon and can be sold to any vendor in a single click, skipping the tedium of dragging dozens of low-value items into the trade window one by one.

1. Right-click an item and select Add to Wares, or hold Shift when clicking an item in the inventory to flag it instantly.
2. Open any merchant's trade window and switch to the Barter view.
3. Click Sell Wares in the corner of the trade screen to dump every flagged item at once.
4. Collect the gold and move on.

Wares are per-character — selling at a vendor only clears the active character's flagged items, so switch to each companion separately. Good candidates: non-magical weapons and armour, low-value trinkets, and duplicate scrolls. The trader at camp provides a convenient selling point without fast-travelling to a settlement.

05Organising With Pouches and Containers

The game generates lootable pouches, backpacks, and cases throughout every area. These can be placed inside a character's inventory or the camp chest to create folders. This is purely organisational (containers do not reduce weight), but it dramatically speeds up finding items mid-combat or mid-conversation.

A recommended camp-chest setup:

• Potions pouch — all healing potions, elixirs, and status-curing consumables.
• Scrolls pouch — spell scrolls loosely sorted by school.
• Camp supplies pouch — food, to keep bulk supplies from cluttering the chest.
• Weapons bag — spare weapons for swapping builds or companions.
• Crafting bag — alchemy ingredients, dyes, and quest components that should never be accidentally sold.

The inventory's Sort By button offers Latest, Value, Weight, and Type modes, which quickly surface the heaviest items or most valuable loot when deciding what to sell next.

06Quick Reference: When Overloaded Mid-Dungeon

When the red Overloaded icon appears and there is no time to reorganise carefully, run through this checklist in order:

1. Send to Camp — right-click the heaviest items (full armour sets, two-handed weapons) and send them to the chest. This removes weight instantly.
2. Redistribute to high-Strength companions if they have capacity remaining.
3. Add low-value loot to Wares — flag and, if near a merchant, sell immediately.
4. Drop non-essential items near a recognisable landmark as a last resort and retrieve them after the fight.
5. Check for stackables — ensure potions, scrolls, arrows, and camp supplies are stacked rather than scattered across separate slots.

Long term, the cleanest solution is investing in Strength for frontline companions and leaning hard on Send to Camp after every major encounter rather than hoarding loot on active party members.
