BG3 Romance Guide — Every Romanceable Companion
Baldur's Gate 3 features eight romanceable companions, each with a hidden approval score, unique unlock conditions, and multi-act story payoffs. Getting a romance right means understanding the approval system, hitting the Act 1 tiefling party at the right moment, and knowing whose values align with your playstyle — before you accidentally lock yourself out of a companion entirely.
01How the Approval System Works
Every companion tracks a hidden approval score. It shifts up or down based on dialogue choices, how you treat NPCs, and moral decisions. Approval only accumulates while the companion is physically in your active party — choices made without them nearby have no effect on their score.
Approval gates are hard thresholds, not suggestions. Certain dialogue options, flirt lines, and romantic scenes simply do not appear if a companion's score is too low. There is no way to trigger a romance scene by skipping the relationship-building work. The good news: most companions respond to consistent, values-aligned play.
- Astarion approves of cunning, self-interest, and letting him feed on the player character.
- Shadowheart favours pragmatism, discretion, and protecting the party over strangers.
- Gale rewards intellectual curiosity, kindness, and honest dialogue.
- Lae'zel respects strength, decisiveness, and Githyanki customs; she dislikes hesitation.
- Wyll values heroism, protecting the innocent, and standing against evil.
- Karlach loves enthusiasm, warmth, and standing up for the vulnerable.
- Halsin approves of protecting nature, compassion, and honesty.
- Minthara rewards ruthlessness, ambition, and power — her path diverges sharply from the others.
02The Act 1 Tiefling Party: Your First Romance Window
The Tiefling Refugee Celebration at the Emerald Grove is the densest romance opportunity in Act 1 and the point where most companions make their first move. This party only triggers if the Grove survives — siding with the goblins cancels the celebration entirely and permanently locks you out of several companions.
During the party, companions with sufficient approval will seek the player character out for private conversations — often the first moment a companion directly expresses romantic interest. Accepting an advance does not yet lock anything in; you can still explore multiple relationships in parallel until the game asks you to commit.
The game permits a limited number of romance initiations on the night of the party, so focus on the one or two companions whose approval you have been building. Companions who do not get a private conversation at the party are not lost — their romance paths continue into Acts 2 and 3. The party is an accelerator, not a deadline.
03All Romanceable Companions at a Glance
Jaheira and Minsc join as full party members but are not romanceable, regardless of approval. Every other main companion offers a romance arc spanning multiple acts:
- Astarion — flirt early; his arc deepens dramatically in Act 2. Easiest to build approval with by playing a sharp, self-serving character.
- Shadowheart — responsive to measured, pragmatic choices. Her Act 2 quest directly shapes the romance outcome.
- Gale — opens up quickly with kind, curious play. Ask him about magic and his past to raise approval fast.
- Lae'zel — show strength and confidence; she responds to capability, not flattery.
- Wyll — easiest for players who default to heroic choices; the tiefling party is a natural first-move moment.
- Karlach — one of the warmest romances in the game, approachable early with significant Act 3 stakes.
- Halsin — cannot be fully romanced until Act 3, after the Shadow Curse questline. He is also the only companion offering a structured polyamory path.
- Minthara — requires a specific dark-path decision in Act 1 (see below).
04Pursuing Multiple Romances and When to Commit
BG3 allows players to pursue multiple companions simultaneously in the early stages of each relationship. Flirting and accepting invitations do not immediately lock a romance. Once a companion considers the relationship serious, they will eventually ask whether you are also seeing someone else.
At that point you must choose — continuing with both will result in one or both companions ending the relationship. The exception is Halsin's polyamory path: Astarion, Karlach, and Shadowheart can each individually consent to adding Halsin to an existing romance. Gale will ask for exclusive commitment.
To handle multiple romances cleanly:
- Build approval with multiple companions in parallel through Act 1 without treating any one as locked in.
- Avoid the exclusive-commitment dialogue options until you know who you are committing to.
- If adding Halsin to an existing romance, ask your current partner for permission before the next long rest after Halsin expresses interest.
- Minthara expects exclusivity and cannot be added to a polyamorous arrangement.
05Minthara: The Dark Path Romance
Minthara is the only romance that requires a morally dark decision in Act 1. When you encounter her in the Shattered Sanctum beneath the Goblin Camp, you must side with her plan to raid the Emerald Grove — betraying the Tiefling refugees and the Druids. This triggers a goblin-path camp celebration where Minthara initiates the romance.
The consequences are significant: Wyll and Karlach leave the party permanently, Halsin will not join later, and Gale and Shadowheart suffer major approval losses. This is a genuine dark-playthrough choice, not a shortcut.
There is also a more complex route in which players knock Minthara unconscious with non-lethal attacks rather than killing her, allowing her to be recruited in Act 2 at Moonrise Towers — but the camp-celebration romance scene is lost. Players who want both the party-path companions and Minthara as a companion sometimes use this method.
For those committed to her romance: follow her dialogue prompts during the dark-path celebration honestly. She tests loyalty and power — hesitation or deception at the wrong moment breaks the scene.
06Tips for Getting Every Romance Right
A few practical principles apply across all companions:
- Keep the companion in your party during quests relevant to their backstory — approval spikes at these moments and cannot be retroactively earned.
- Talk to companions at camp after major events. Many relationship conversations only unlock after specific story beats and disappear if you rest past them.
- Save before critical approval moments if you want to experiment — some choices are permanent and some approval losses are steep.
- Do not rush the commit dialogue if you want to explore. There is no timer on most romances; patient play is rewarded.
- The Dream Visitor / Guardian can also be romanced starting in Act 3, independently of companion relationships.
- Halsin's window is time-sensitive — after he expresses interest, obtain your partner's consent before the next long rest or the path closes.
FAQ
Can you romance multiple companions at the same time in BG3?
Yes, up to a point. Multiple romances can be pursued in parallel during the early stages without consequence. Eventually each companion asks for commitment, and at that point you must choose one or risk both relationships ending. The structured exception is Halsin, who can be added to an existing romance with Astarion, Karlach, or Shadowheart if their consent is obtained first.
What happens if you miss the tiefling party in Act 1?
The tiefling party only occurs if the Emerald Grove survives. If the goblins raid successfully, the party is cancelled, Wyll and Karlach leave, and the romance initiations tied to the celebration are lost. Most other companion romances still continue through Acts 2 and 3, so missing the party does not end every relationship — but it closes several early opportunities.
Are Jaheira and Minsc romanceable in Baldur's Gate 3?
No. Both Jaheira and Minsc are recruitable party members but neither offers a romance path, regardless of how high their approval rises. They are fully developed companions with their own questlines and banter, but romantic options are not available for either character.
How do you romance Halsin, and why can't it start in Act 1?
Halsin is focused on breaking the Shadow Curse during Acts 1 and 2 and will not pursue a relationship while that mission is unresolved. Romantic dialogue unlocks in Act 3 after completing the Lift the Shadow Curse quest. Once resolved and the party reaches the Lower City, Halsin expresses his feelings and the romance opens. He also uniquely supports a polyamorous arrangement with Astarion, Karlach, or Shadowheart.
