What Is WoW: Forever? Explained
Blizzard dropped a third version of World of Warcraft at BlizzCon 2026, and it's easy to confuse with Classic Era, the Anniversary realms, or a retail patch. It's none of those. Here's exactly what WoW: Forever is, what's actually new, and how it stacks up against the WoW you already know.
World of Warcraft: Forever is Blizzard's third, permanent pillar for WoW alongside Classic Era and retail — a level-60 return to the original Azeroth that keeps getting new zones, dungeons, raids and races instead of raising the level cap. The base game is included with an active WoW subscription or Game Time — the new Skyborne race is the one exception, sold separately as a paid upgrade. Forever launches November 4, 2026, and ran a public beta from September 17 to October 21, 2026. Classic Era and retail characters do not transfer in; everyone starts fresh.
01The Short Version
World of Warcraft: Forever (often shortened to "WoW Forever") is Blizzard's new, permanent version of World of Warcraft built around the original level 1-60 Azeroth. It launched into public beta on September 17, 2026 and releases globally on November 4, 2026, at 3:00 p.m. PST.
Blizzard has been explicit about what it isn't: at the BlizzCon 2026 reveal, the development team described Forever as "not a mode, a season, or a new version of Classic" but instead "a promise to keep building this world with the community." In practice, that means Forever keeps the vanilla level cap and the original two continents, but treats them as a live game that Blizzard will keep expanding indefinitely — new zones, dungeons, raids, races and systems layered onto the world you already know, rather than a march toward a higher level cap.
02WoW: Forever vs. Classic Era vs. Anniversary vs. Retail
As of late 2026, World of Warcraft effectively runs three parallel lanes, and Forever is the newest of the three:
- WoW: Forever — permanent level 1-60 Azeroth, but reworked and continuously expanded with new zones, dungeons, raids, races and systems. No flying mounts, no level scaling, new fresh-start realms.
- WoW Classic Era — the untouched original vanilla game, frozen on its current patch. Gear and progression stay relevant forever because the content never moves past level 60 and nothing gets rebalanced around it.
- Burning Crusade Classic Anniversary Edition — for players who want to keep progressing past level 60 into Outland on a classic-style timeline.
- Retail (currently the Midnight era) — the modern game, with a level cap in the 70s-80s that rises with each expansion, flying, Dungeon Finder and Raid Finder matchmaking, transmog, Mythic+ dungeons, and streamlined leveling built to get you to endgame fast.
Forever sits apart from all three: it isn't a Classic+ community mod, and it isn't a reskin of a Midnight content patch — it's a standalone, ongoing game built specifically around the original continents.
03What's Actually New in WoW: Forever
Forever isn't just vanilla WoW with a new launcher icon. Blizzard's BlizzCon reveal detailed a large amount of new content woven into the existing 1-60 leveling experience:
- 1,000+ new quests spread across the entire level 1-60 range, on top of the existing vanilla questlines.
- Four new and reimagined zones: the elven starting zone Zephras Isle (levels 1-12), The Riverglades (roughly mid-30s to mid-40s, with over 150 new quests on its own), Shen'dralas (a previously unvisited blind spot between Mulgore and Desolace, centered on the Shen'dralar and the Gelkis/Magram centaur tribes), and the endgame, level-60 zone Mount Hyjal, which also hosts two of Forever's new raids.
- A new 15v15 battleground on the Darkspear Islands, combining control points with flag-capture objectives.
- 9 new dungeons built into long-referenced but never-visited parts of the original world: the Hall of Thanes beneath Ironforge, the Ruins of Lordaeron, a dig site above Whelgar's Excavation, the City of Dalaran, Blackmaw Hold, the Drowned City, Krol'dok Stronghold, Alcaz Prison, and the Shaper's Terrace.
- Two brand-new raids unlocking after launch — the 20-player Hyjal Summit (13 bosses) and the 10-player Barrow Deeps (8 bosses) — arriving on December 9, 2026, five weeks after release, alongside the existing 40-player Onyxia's Lair which is available from day one.
Blizzard's four stated design pillars for Forever are: staying approachable and familiar, treating the world itself as the main character, prioritizing the journey over the destination, and protecting the game's social systems (grouping, world interaction) rather than optimizing them away.
04The Skyborne: A New Playable Race
The headline new-content reveal is the Skyborne, a new elven race tied to Zephras Isle and a previously unseen "sky kingdom" shown in the Forever announcement cinematic. Unlike most WoW races, Skyborne characters choose a faction at creation, and the classes available differ slightly by side:
- Horde Skyborne can be Warriors, Hunters, Rogues, Druids, or Shaman.
- Alliance Skyborne can be Warriors, Hunters, Rogues, Druids, or Mage.
- Skyborne get their own new Druid forms, plus unique racials, voices, dances and customization options built specifically for the race.
The Skyborne is not included with a base WoW subscription — it requires buying one of the paid Forever upgrade editions (see pricing below).
05New Race-Class Combinations
Separately from the Skyborne, Forever also unlocks six new race-class combinations for existing races — included for anyone with a normal subscription, no upgrade purchase needed. For the first time in a classic-style version of WoW, both factions gain access to all nine classes:
- Undead Paladin (Horde) — gives the Horde its first-ever Paladin option.
- Orc Mage and Troll Warlock (Horde) — the Horde's first pure-caster options for those races.
- Human Hunter, Dwarf Shaman, and Gnome Priest (Alliance).
06The Legacy System: Account-Wide Progression for Alts
Forever also introduces the Legacy System, an account-wide progression layer designed to reward leveling alts instead of punishing it. Completing "Legacy Challenges" on any character banks Legacy Points to the whole account; each individual character then spends its own allocation across three Legacy Trees:
- Adventure — leveling, exploration, Rested Experience and open-world bonuses.
- Professions — tradeskill progression, gathering, fishing, cooking and crafting.
- Resourcefulness — reagents, durability, Reputation, Honor, camps and other convenience perks.
At launch each character can spend up to 16 Legacy Points, while the account as a whole can earn up to 65 — a deliberate cap meant to make players choose meaningful perks rather than unlock everything on every character.
07Level Cap, Fresh Realms & Character Transfers
Forever's level cap is 60, and Blizzard has framed it as permanent — the team's stated intent is to keep expanding the world around level 60 rather than raising the cap the way retail expansions do.
There are no traditional numbered realms. Instead, players pick a region and then a ruleset — Normal, PvP, Roleplaying, or Hardcore — and everyone on that ruleset in that region shares one world and economy. Forever launches on fresh realms with a fresh economy: as of this writing, Blizzard has not announced any character, gold, or item transfer, copy, or boost from Classic Era, Anniversary realms, or retail into Forever. Plan on starting from scratch.
08Platform: Is WoW: Forever on Console?
WoW: Forever is a PC release. Blizzard has not announced a PlayStation or Xbox version, and the game will launch exclusively on PC alongside the rest of World of Warcraft. Blizzard did demo official gamepad/controller support for Forever at BlizzCon 2026, which is a PC feature (playing with a controller on PC) rather than a console port — though some outlets have speculated it could be useful groundwork if a console version were ever pursued. Nothing beyond speculation has been confirmed.
09Price, Editions & Is WoW: Forever Free With Your Subscription?
Yes — the base Forever experience, including the reworked world, the new zones, dungeons and quests, and the six new race-class combinations, is included with an active WoW subscription or game time, exactly like Classic Era and retail are today. You don't buy Forever separately to play it.
What isn't included is the Skyborne race, which is gated behind paid upgrade editions:
- Skyborne Heroic Pack — $29.99: Skyborne race access and starting zone, early name reservation, a mount, a transmog set, a toy, housing decor, and one Invite-a-Friend code.
- Skyborne Epic Pack — $59.99: everything in Heroic, plus beta access, 30 days of game time, extra cosmetics, and two more Invite-a-Friend codes.
- Warcraft Forever Collection — $79.99: everything in Epic, plus Warcraft III: Reforged and its Forsaken Kingdom campaign, and a third Invite-a-Friend code.
- Physical Collector's Edition — $150: all of the digital Forever Collection contents plus a 13-inch dwarf hunter and bear companion statue, art prints, collectible pins, a companion journal, and a Zephras Isle mousepad. Blizzard's US Gear Store ships it to select regions in North and South America only (limit three per household); Europe has its own separate €150 listing in English, French and German. It sold out at the Blizzard Gear Store shortly after pre-orders opened, with no restock date announced.
In short: you can play almost all of WoW: Forever for free with a normal subscription, but the Skyborne race specifically requires one of the paid packs above.
10Release Date & Beta Timeline

Early name reservation and character creation opened on October 27, 2026, ahead of the full global launch on November 4, 2026, at 3:00 p.m. PST.
FAQ
What is WoW Forever?
World of Warcraft: Forever is Blizzard's new, permanent version of WoW built around the original level 1-60 Azeroth. Instead of raising the level cap like a normal expansion, it keeps the vanilla cap and continuously adds new zones, dungeons, raids, races and systems to that same world. It launched into beta on September 17, 2026 and released globally on November 4, 2026.
Is WoW Forever the same as Classic+?
It's the closest thing Blizzard has shipped to the community's long-requested "Classic+" idea, but Blizzard doesn't market it as an official Classic+ project — it's positioned as its own permanent version of the game, separate from WoW Classic Era, which stays untouched on its current patch.
Is WoW Forever free with a WoW subscription?
The base Forever experience — the reworked world, new zones, quests, dungeons, and the six new race-class combinations — is included with an active WoW subscription or game time at no extra cost. The new Skyborne race is the exception: it requires buying one of the paid Skyborne/Forever upgrade packs, starting at $29.99.
Can I transfer my Classic Era character to WoW Forever?
No. WoW: Forever launches on fresh realms with a fresh economy, and Blizzard has not announced any character, gold, or item transfer, copy, or boost from Classic Era, Anniversary realms, or retail into Forever. Everyone starts new characters.
What is the WoW Forever release date?
World of Warcraft: Forever launched globally on November 4, 2026, at 3:00 p.m. PST, following a public beta that ran from September 17 to October 21, 2026.
Is WoW Forever on console (PS5 or Xbox)?
No. WoW: Forever is a PC release only, with no PlayStation or Xbox version announced. Blizzard added official controller support for PC players at BlizzCon 2026, but that's not a console port, and no console release has been confirmed.
What is the level cap in WoW Forever?
The level cap is 60, and Blizzard has described it as a permanent cap — the plan is to keep expanding the world and content around level 60 rather than raising it with future updates, unlike retail's rising level cap.
What's new in WoW Forever compared to vanilla WoW?
Over 1,000 new quests across the 1-60 leveling range, four reimagined and brand-new zones (Mount Hyjal, Zephras Isle, The Riverglades, Shen'dralas), a new 15v15 battleground, 9 new dungeons, two new raids (Hyjal Summit and Barrow Deeps, unlocking December 9, 2026), the new Skyborne race, six new race-class combinations like Undead Paladin, and the account-wide Legacy progression system for alts.
