WoW: Forever Realms & Rulesets PvE, PvP, Roleplay or Hardcore?
WoW: Forever has no realm list. Before you create a character you pick a ruleset: Normal (the PvE-style baseline), PvP, Roleplaying or Hardcore. Each ruleset is one big shared world, you can only group with players on the same ruleset, and you cannot switch an existing character to another one. Hardcore does not exist at launch (November 4, 2026). Here is what each option means and how to choose.
01The Short Version
- No realms: you choose a ruleset instead, and everyone on that ruleset shares one large world (Blizzard).
- Four rulesets: Normal, PvP, Roleplaying, Hardcore.
- Hardcore arrives "sometime after launch", with no date announced.
- No switching: to play another ruleset you make a new character there.
- No cross-ruleset grouping for dungeons and raids.
02The Four Rulesets
- Normal: Blizzard's baseline: exploration, questing and cooperation, with player combat only if you choose it. This is what most people mean by "PvE realm".
- PvP: open-world conflict in contested territory, where being attacked by the other faction is a constant risk.
- Roleplaying: for players who want to stay in the fantasy of Azeroth and find like-minded people. Warcraft Tavern reports strict naming conventions and behaviour rules.
- Hardcore: a challenge where death has lasting consequences. It is a fully enclosed ecosystem and is not available at launch.
Blizzard does not call the first one "PvE" in its announcement; the official name is Normal. Players and press use PvE as shorthand.
03Grouping and Factions
- Grouping: you can group, run dungeons and raid only with players on your own ruleset. Cross-ruleset grouping is not supported, and Horde and Alliance cannot group together.
- Battlegrounds: may include players from other rulesets, but Hardcore stays separate.
- Normal, Roleplaying and Hardcore: you can have characters on both factions.
- PvP: you can create characters for only one faction on this ruleset. Once you make an Alliance character there, you cannot make a Horde one, and vice versa.
- Faction balance: Blizzard says the PvP ruleset will use systems similar to Season of Discovery, where creating characters for a faction can be temporarily limited when balance support is needed.
If you plan to play with friends, pick the ruleset together first. A friend on a different ruleset cannot join your dungeon or raid group.
04Switching Rulesets and Moving Characters
You cannot freely move a character between rulesets; Blizzard's answer is to roll a new one. The only documented exception is Hardcore: when a Hardcore character dies, it can transfer to another ruleset, including PvP.
Characters from Classic Era or retail do not transfer into WoW: Forever, so everyone starts fresh (see What Is WoW: Forever?).
05Legacy Points and Collections Across Rulesets
Legacy progress and Collections are account-wide, so what you earn on one ruleset helps your other characters. Hardcore is the exception: rewards earned in Hardcore carry over to other rulesets, but progress from other rulesets does not flow back into Hardcore, and Hardcore characters cannot use Legacy rewards earned elsewhere (Warcraft Tavern).
In practice, trying a ruleset is not wasted time: Legacy progress follows your account. See the leveling guide for how to use it.
06Language Setting
You also choose a preferred online language, which influences who you meet. In game: Escape, Options, System, Languages and Social, then Preferred Online Language. The setting is account-wide and has a 24-hour cooldown before you can change it again.
07Which Ruleset Should You Pick?
- Normal if you want the least friction: questing, dungeons and raids with optional PvP. It is the safe default and allows both factions.
- PvP if you want open-world fights and accept being locked to one faction on that ruleset. Read the PvP guide first.
- Roleplaying if you want to follow naming and behaviour rules for immersion.
- Hardcore later, once it is released; you cannot start there at launch.
08What Is Not Confirmed
Hardcore's exact rules and release date, the details of the PvP faction-balance system, and name reservation timing were not confirmed in the sources used here, so they are left out. Blizzard may change details before and after launch; check the official announcement for the current rules.
