WoW Forever Skyborne Race Guide

Updated September 20268 min readBy

The Skyborne are the headline addition to World of Warcraft: Forever — Blizzard's reimagined take on classic Azeroth announced at BlizzCon 2026. They're the first race in the game that isn't locked to a single faction at character creation, they come with their own floating starting zone, and unlocking them costs more than a normal subscription. Here's everything confirmed so far about their lore, class options, racials, and how to actually get one rolled before WoW Forever launches on November 4, 2026.

01What Is the Skyborne Race?

The Skyborne are a new playable elven race added in World of Warcraft: Forever, Blizzard's overhaul of the original 1-60 Azeroth experience that was unveiled at BlizzCon 2026 alongside new zones, roughly 1,000 additional quests, and a run of new dungeons and raids layered into the classic world. Unlike every other race in the game, Skyborne are neutral at creation: you choose Alliance or Horde for them the same way you'd pick a spec, not a starting continent.

That neutrality comes with tradeoffs. A couple of classes are faction-exclusive for Skyborne, one of their racial abilities differs depending on the faction you pick, and the race itself isn't included with a standard subscription — it's sold separately as part of a paid pack. The sections below break down exactly what's confirmed for each of those pieces.

02Skyborne Lore: Highborne Exiles Who Bonded With the Sky

According to Blizzard's reveal, the Skyborne are descended from Highborne elven exiles who struck a pact with the Skywall wind elementals generations ago. That bond let a group of exiles build a hidden, flying sanctuary — Zephras Isle — where they lived largely cut off from the rest of Azeroth for thousands of years, kept aloft by their elemental allies.

The recent disappearance of the air elementals sustaining the isle is the event that pulls the Skyborne back into the wider world and into WoW Forever's story, forcing them to seek out new alliances on the ground — which is the narrative hook for choosing between the Alliance and the Horde during character creation.

03Alliance or Horde: How Skyborne Faction Choice Works

Skyborne is the only race in WoW Forever that isn't tied to one faction. At character creation you pick whether your Skyborne joins the Alliance or the Horde, and that choice locks in two things: your fifth class option and one of your four racial abilities (covered in the next two sections).

Outside of those two differences, Alliance and Horde Skyborne share the same base kit, the same starting zone, and the same look-and-feel — the faction choice is a build decision layered onto the race, not a separate version of it.

04Skyborne Racial Abilities

Skyborne get four racial abilities: three shared by both factions, and one that's exclusive to whichever faction you pick. These are beta values as tested from September 2026 and could still change before launch.

05Skyborne Classes: What You Can Play

Skyborne have five class options total, split by faction:

That's a narrower class list than most established races get in WoW Forever, but it covers a melee, ranged physical, stealth, and hybrid caster option regardless of which faction you pick, plus one exclusive caster per side. Druid is the one class every Skyborne can take no matter their faction, and Blizzard's BlizzCon 2026 preview showed the class getting its own dedicated Bear, Cat, Travel, and Moonkin forms built around the Skyborne's avian, skybound look — confirmed at reveal, though exact visual tuning could still shift before launch. Because WoW Forever doesn't have flying mounts, Skyborne Druids don't get a flight form either, same as every other Druid in the game.

06Zephras Isle: The Skyborne Starting Zone

Skyborne begin on Zephras Isle, an elemental, skybound starting experience built specifically for the race and covering roughly levels 1-12 before you funnel into the standard Alliance or Horde leveling path for your faction. It's a self-contained zone — you won't share it with any other race's starting experience.

Zephras Isle was part of the first wave of content Blizzard turned on when the WoW Forever beta opened, alongside the two earliest dungeons (Hall of Thanes and Ruins of Lordaeron) and general zone content up to the initial beta level cap of 20.

07How to Unlock the Skyborne Race

Skyborne is not included with a standard WoW subscription or Game Time — it's an optional, paid upgrade. To create one you need to own one of the following:

In other words: if you only want to play Skyborne once WoW Forever launches on November 4, the Heroic Pack is enough. If you want to try the race during the beta window (September 17 – October 21, 2026), you need the Epic Pack or the Collection specifically — the Heroic Pack alone won't get you in early. Pricing above is confirmed on Blizzard's own pre-purchase page, but it's still worth a quick check on the Battle.net store before buying in case of last-minute regional adjustments.

08Who Should Play Skyborne?

Skyborne suits players who care more about the race's lore hook and its utility racials than about raw min-maxed numbers — early community breakdowns of the racial kit place Skyborne among the weaker races for straight combat output, since Wind Blessed's +1% haste and Elemental Insight's situational +5% damage are modest compared to some other races' racials. What Skyborne brings instead is open-world utility: Walk on Air smooths out fall damage and repositioning, and the faction-specific regen/speed cooldown is strong for leveling and questing even if it can't be used in a fight.

If your priority is a specific class fantasy over the race pick, note the ceiling: Skyborne cannot be a Priest, Paladin, Warlock, or Death Knight on either faction, and can only be a Mage on Alliance or a Shaman on Horde. Players who want one of those classes should pick a different race; players drawn to the Highborne-in-exile lore and don't mind Warrior, Hunter, Rogue, Druid, or their faction's exclusive caster get the most out of Skyborne.

FAQ

What is the Skyborne race in WoW Forever?

The Skyborne are a new playable elven race in World of Warcraft: Forever, descended from Highborne exiles who bonded with Skywall wind elementals and built a hidden flying sanctuary called Zephras Isle. They're the only race in the game not locked to a single faction — you choose Alliance or Horde for them at character creation.

Is the Skyborne race free in World of Warcraft: Forever?

No. Skyborne is not included with a standard subscription or Game Time. You need to buy the Skyborne Heroic Pack ($29.99/€29.99) or Skyborne Epic Pack ($59.99/€59.99), or own the Warcraft Forever Collection bundle ($79.99/€79.99), to create one.

Can Skyborne be both Alliance and Horde?

Not on the same character, but as a race Skyborne can join either faction — you pick Alliance or Horde during character creation, the same way you'd pick a class. This is unique among WoW Forever's races; every other race is locked to one faction from the start.

What classes can Skyborne play?

Warrior, Hunter, Rogue, and Druid are available to Skyborne on both factions. Mage is exclusive to Alliance Skyborne, and Shaman is exclusive to Horde Skyborne. Skyborne cannot be Priest, Paladin, Warlock, or Death Knight on either faction.

What are the Skyborne racial abilities?

All Skyborne get three shared racials — Walk on Air (glide for 10 seconds), Wind Blessed (+1% haste), and Elemental Insight (+5% damage to Elementals) — plus one faction-exclusive racial: Read Ley Line for Alliance (+100% Health/Mana regen for 15 seconds, out of combat only) or Skysight for Horde (+10% movement speed for 30 seconds, out of combat only). These are beta values and may change before launch.

Can I play Skyborne in the WoW Forever beta?

Only if you own the Skyborne Epic Pack or the Warcraft Forever Collection — those grant beta entitlement starting September 17, 2026, when the beta went live with Zephras Isle already playable. The Skyborne Heroic Pack unlocks the race for launch (November 4, 2026) but does not include beta access.

Where do Skyborne start? What is Zephras Isle?

Skyborne begin on Zephras Isle, a dedicated floating starting zone built for the race that covers roughly levels 1-12 before funneling into the standard Alliance or Horde leveling content. It's exclusive to Skyborne characters and isn't shared with any other race's starting experience.
