WARDOGS How to Fly a Helicopter Takeoff, Hover and Landing
Most WARDOGS helicopters crash because the pilot over-corrects, not because flying is impossible. The reliable routine is: start the engine and wait for the rotors, lift off with small collective inputs, hold a stable hover before you add any forward movement, brake early before landing and touch down with short descent taps. Guides disagree on default keybinds and settings, so this guide teaches the technique and tells you what to look up in your own Controls menu rather than quoting keys as fact.
01Before You Lift: Settings to Check
Guides disagree on defaults, so open the settings and check these yourself:
- Rotary Vehicle Mouse Control. Several guides use it so mouse swipes handle yaw or pitch. One guide lists it as enabled in its recommended settings; none of the guides sourced here state the default, so check its state.
- Vehicle sensitivity is separate from infantry sensitivity (two guides agree). Lower it if you keep over-correcting in a hover; one guide suggests starting pitch and yaw sensitivity at 80% and tuning within 60–100%, so tune to feel.
- Flight assists (Stability Assist, Auto-Hover Assist, Envelope Limits, Turn Coordination) exist as separate toggles. Guides disagree: one recommends enabling all except Envelope Limits, another says to turn them off. Test both in the practice range.
- Keybinds. Collective, cyclic and yaw keys are listed differently by every guide. Check your Controls menu for the Rotary Vehicle binds.
02Practise Where Crashing Is Free
Reported guides say vehicles spawned at the practice range (some call it the Firing Range) cost nothing, so a crash there is free. Start with a cheap transport such as the MH-6 and repeat three drills until they are boring: lift and set down, hold a hover, and a short stop without gaining height.
See the vehicles guide for what each helicopter costs and how Pilot levels gate them.
03Takeoff: Engine, Collective, Hover
- Start the engine and wait for the rotors to spool up. Inputs before that do nothing.
- Raise the collective gradually until the skids clear the ground, then ease off.
- Hold a low hover until the wobble stops. Add no direction input until it is stable.
- Correct drift with small inputs and release early, because the aircraft keeps rotating on momentum.
Over-correction is the most common takeoff failure. If the helicopter starts swinging, neutralize the inputs rather than fighting it.
04Altitude First, Then Movement
Treat height and speed as two separate jobs. Pitch forward gently to build speed, then ease off the pitch once you are moving. If you start sinking while moving forward, ease off the forward pitch or add a little collective.
Turn mainly by banking and use small yaw corrections, and keep turns wide near trees, rooftops and wires. Treetops are reported to be forgiving, but clipping a building or wall destroys the helicopter.
Do not dump the collective near the ground: descending too fast makes a harsher impact that can damage or destroy the helicopter.
05Landing: Brake Early, Tap Down
- Pick a large flat area with an exit route, away from trees, wires, slopes and busy FOBs.
- Start braking before you reach the landing zone, with backward pitch while holding height.
- Arrive with almost no speed, then lower collective in short taps rather than one long hold. Descending too fast hits harder than you expect.
- Stay still after touchdown until passengers have left.
If the approach goes wrong, add collective, climb and set up a new approach. A go-around is cheaper than a wreck.
06Staying Alive and Not Losing Your Squad
- When missiles are inbound, deploy flares instead of hoping to out-fly them.
- One guide lists V as the flare key, so confirm it in Controls.
- Passengers can parachute out, and a hover over a hot zone is a standard drop. Check how many are still aboard before you move.
For where to drop squads, see the forward spawn and squad guide and the control zone guide.
FAQ
How do you fly a helicopter in WARDOGS?
Start the engine, wait for the rotors, raise the collective gently until you lift off, hold a stable hover, then add small forward pitch. Watch altitude and speed separately.
Why do I keep crashing my helicopter in WARDOGS?
Usually over-correction or descending and braking at once. Make smaller inputs, hover before moving and brake before the landing zone.
What are the helicopter controls in WARDOGS?
Guides list different defaults, so check the Rotary Vehicle section of your Controls menu. Collective controls climb and descent, cyclic controls pitch and roll, and yaw turns the nose.
Should I turn on mouse control for helicopters in WARDOGS?
Many guides do, via Rotary Vehicle Mouse Control. Try it at the practice range and keep sensitivity low until your hover is steady.
Where can I practise flying in WARDOGS?
The practice range (called the Firing Range by some guides), where vehicle spawns reportedly cost nothing.
How do I land a helicopter in WARDOGS?
Brake early, arrive nearly stopped and tap the collective down in short bursts. Stay still until passengers exit.
