WARDOGS Control Zone & Hot Zone How the Objective Really Works
In WARDOGS the match is decided by one thing: the faction with the most players inside the Control Zone earns the points, and the first of the three factions to reach 100 points wins. Kills do not score. The Hot Zone is a smaller moving circle inside it where every player counts as two and cash pays double. This guide explains the scoring, how towers move the Hot Zone, and how to play around it. Rules are from the Early Access build (Update 0.1.2) and fan guides disagree on a few details, which are flagged below.
01The Short Version
- Match: up to 100 players in three factions (Steam store page), one objective.
- Control Zone: a randomly placed 2 km by 2 km area; the faction with the most players inside earns the points (Steam store page).
- Win condition: first faction to 100 points.
- Hot Zone: a smaller circle moving inside the Control Zone; players there count double and earn double cash.
- Kills do not score. They only matter because a dead enemy is one fewer body in the count.
02How Control Zone Scoring Works
At each score tick, the faction with the most players inside the Control Zone gets the point. A narrow lead scores exactly the same as a huge one, so you do not need to crush the enemy, only to out-number them at the moment of the tick (KeenGamer).
One guide (allthings.how) puts the tick at one point every 30 seconds and says a bar beside the minimap fills toward the next one. That interval comes from a single source, so treat it as approximate and watch the bar in your own match. If you pull players out right before the bar completes, another faction can take the point.
Because there are three factions, the count is never just you versus one enemy. Fighting one faction head-on can leave the zone open to the third, so keep an eye on who is actually leading the count rather than who is shooting at you.
03The Hot Zone: Double Count, Double Cash
The Hot Zone is a smaller circle that moves inside the Control Zone. Every player inside it counts as two toward zone control, so ten teammates standing in it register as twenty (KeenGamer, allthings.how). Steam's own store text confirms it as the place to "earn double the cash".
That makes it the strongest place to be for both objectives: a small team in the Hot Zone can outweigh a larger team standing in the rest of the Control Zone, and the same actions there pay more.
The trade-off is risk. Everyone wants the bonus, so the Hot Zone is usually where the fighting is thickest (XGamingServer). Following it as it moves works better than holding one fixed spot, because the circle does not stay still.
allthings.how lists the passive zone payout as $160 per cycle in the Control Zone and $320 in the Hot Zone. Those exact figures come from one guide and may change with patches, so use them only as a sense of proportion (double), not as fixed numbers.
04Towers, Codes and Moving the Hot Zone
The Hot Zone is not random drift alone. Towers inside the Control Zone are how you steer it:
- Capture a tower. This gives no points by itself; each capture reveals one digit of a match code (KeenGamer).
- Share the digit with your team immediately. The code is useless if only one player knows it, so post it in team chat as soon as you see it.
- Enter the full code at a tower console. The Hot Zone then relocates toward that tower, ideally one your faction holds and can defend.
KeenGamer also reports that a drill rig built inside a FOB pulls the Hot Zone toward your base. That is a single-source claim, so verify it in game before relying on it. For the mechanics of capturing towers and building an FOB, see the towers, FOBs and logistics guide.
05What Else Adds to Your Count
Because only bodies in the zone matter, support actions often beat raw kills:
- Revive and heal teammates so they stay in the count instead of respawning far away.
- Ferry squadmates into the zone by vehicle or helicopter; transporting friendlies also pays cash (XGamingServer).
- Spot enemies so your faction can remove bodies from the rival count.
- Park a spawn vehicle near the Hot Zone. allthings.how says the APC unlocks once any faction reaches 20 points; place it close so respawning teammates land where points are scored.
Cheap loadouts still count fully as a body in the zone, so do not hold back from the objective because you lost your expensive kit. See the money guide for how to fund the next life.
06A Simple Game Plan
- Early: deploy toward the Control Zone, not toward kills. Take a tower, post the digit in chat.
- Mid: commit most of the team to the Hot Zone and follow it; keep a few players on towers and the supply line.
- Late: allthings.how suggests that around 70 to 80 points the zones matter more than towers. Stop chasing codes and protect your count right before each tick.
- Always: check the score of all three factions. Help whoever is closest to 100 only if it stops the leader.
07Where Guides Disagree
WARDOGS is in Early Access and BULKHEAD expects it to stay there for roughly one to two years (Steam page), so numbers can change. Fan guides differ on team size (some say 33 per faction, others only that matches hold up to 100 players), the exact tick timing and the cash figures. Treat those as unverified and cross-check against the in-game map and BULKHEAD's patch notes for your version.
FAQ
How do you score points in WARDOGS?
The faction with the most players inside the Control Zone earns the point at each score tick. Kills do not add to the score, and a narrow lead scores the same as a large one. The first faction to 100 points wins.
What is the Hot Zone in WARDOGS?
A smaller circle that moves inside the Control Zone. Each player in it counts as two toward zone control and the same actions there pay double cash, so ten players in the Hot Zone count as twenty.
How big is the Control Zone in WARDOGS?
Steam's store page describes it as a randomly placed 2 km by 2 km area on a larger map. The location changes per match.
How do you move the Hot Zone in WARDOGS?
Capture towers to reveal digits of a match code, share them with your team, then enter the full code at a tower console to relocate the Hot Zone toward that tower. One guide also says a drill rig in a FOB pulls it toward your base, which is unconfirmed.
How often does the Control Zone give points?
One guide reports a point every 30 seconds to the leading faction, with a bar beside the minimap showing progress to the next tick. This is a single-source figure, so check it in your own match.
Do kills count toward winning in WARDOGS?
No. Only the number of players in the zone at each tick counts. Kills help only by removing enemy bodies from the count.
How many points do you need to win in WARDOGS?
100 points. The first of the three factions to reach it wins the match.
