Pokémon Legends: Z-A is an action RPG developed by Game Freak and published by Nintendo and The Pokémon Company. It launched on 16 October 2025 for Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2. The game takes place entirely within Lumiose City in the Kalos region, set five years after the events of Pokémon X and Y. Unlike traditional Pokémon games, it features real-time battles where players and their Pokémon can move freely in 3D space, dodge attacks, and trigger Mega Evolution via a chargeable Mega Gauge.
The three first partner Pokémon in Pokémon Legends: Z-A are Chikorita (Grass type, from Johto), Tepig (Fire type, from Unova), and Totodile (Water type, from Johto). Each starter follows its traditional evolution line — Chikorita evolves into Bayleef then Meganium, Tepig into Pignite then Emboar, and Totodile into Croconaw then Feraligatr. All three final forms receive unique Mega Evolutions as part of the game's story. Your in-game friend receives the two partners you didn't choose.
Mega Evolution returns as a core mechanic. During battle, your Pokémon collects Mega Power by landing moves on opponents or by picking up Mega Power orbs that appear on the field. When the Mega Gauge at the bottom-right of the screen is full, pressing the right analog stick (R↓) triggers Mega Evolution. The Mega form is temporary — the gauge drains over time and can be refilled by collecting more orbs. The game features 45 Mega Evolution forms in total, including 26 new forms introduced specifically for Pokémon Legends: Z-A.
Rogue Mega Evolution is a phenomenon where wild Pokémon spontaneously Mega Evolve and become aggressive. These encounters are more challenging than standard battles — the Rogue Mega Pokémon is larger, more powerful, and uses special attacks. To overcome them, you must dodge attacks and collect Mega Power orbs scattered around the arena to fill your own Mega Gauge and counter with your partner's Mega Evolution. Rogue Mega Evolutions are tied to the game's main story involving Quasartico Inc.'s urban redevelopment project.
Pokémon Legends: Z-A is a Nintendo-exclusive title available on Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2. It is not available on other platforms (PC, PlayStation, Xbox). The Switch 2 version received a higher Metacritic score (78/100 vs 70/100 on Switch) and sold roughly half the launch week copies on the newer hardware.
