Pokémon Legends: Z-A Beginner's Guide How to Play

Pokémon Legends: Z-A is an action RPG developed by Game Freak and published by Nintendo and The Pokémon Company, released on 16 October 2025 for Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2. The game takes place entirely within Lumiose City in the Kalos region — five years after the events of Pokémon X and Y — and introduces a fully real-time combat system that replaces the series' traditional turn-based battles. This guide covers every fundamental you need to get started: how battles work, how to catch Pokémon, how Mega Evolution functions, and the key systems that make Pokémon Legends: Z-A different from any other game in the series.

01What Is Pokémon Legends: Z-A?

Pokémon Legends: Z-A (also referred to as Pokémon Legends ZA) is the second entry in the Legends sub-series, following Pokémon Legends: Arceus (2022). Unlike the mainline Pokémon games — Scarlet and Violet, Sword and Shield, and their predecessors — Legends: Z-A does not follow the formula of traveling between gym badges across an open region. Instead, the entire adventure takes place within a single urban environment: Lumiose City.

The city is undergoing an ambitious urban redevelopment project overseen by a corporation called Quasartico Inc., and designated 'Wild Zones' throughout Lumiose allow wild Pokémon to coexist with residents. You are a trainer drawn into both the redevelopment scheme and the mystery of a phenomenon called Rogue Mega Evolution, in which wild Pokémon spontaneously Mega Evolve and become dangerous.

The game sold 5.8 million copies in its first week worldwide — roughly half on Nintendo Switch 2 — and reached 12.79 million copies by March 2026, making it one of the fastest-selling Switch exclusives.

02Real-Time Combat: How Battles Work

Pokémon Legends: Z-A replaces the traditional turn-based battle system entirely. Instead of choosing moves from a menu while both sides wait for their turn, battles happen in real time: you, your Pokémon, and the opponent can all move freely across a 3D arena.

Key differences from a classic Pokémon battle:

The real-time system rewards players who understand timing and positioning, but even beginners can succeed by picking Pokémon with favorable type matchups — the fundamentals of the series still apply.

03Catching Pokémon

Wild Pokémon roam the Wild Zones within Lumiose City and can be encountered directly on the map rather than through random encounters. The catching system from Pokémon Legends: Arceus returns in an evolved form:

04The Mega Gauge and Mega Evolution

Mega Evolution is the central mechanic of Pokémon Legends: Z-A and is available to trainers throughout the game rather than being locked behind a badge or storyline progression past a certain point.

How the Mega Gauge works:

The game features 62 Mega Evolution forms in the base game, including 26 new ones introduced specifically for this entry. Your starter Pokémon is among the first you can Mega Evolve after completing Main Mission 10.

05The Z-A Royale

The Z-A Royale is the game's competitive progression system. Trainers start at Rank Z (the lowest) and work toward Rank A (the highest) by completing battles and challenges across Lumiose City's various districts.

Progressing through the Royale unlocks access to new Wild Zones, story missions, and rewards including rare Pokémon and Mega Stones. Think of it as the equivalent of the gym badge structure in the mainline games — a structured path of increasingly difficult battles that gate your access to tougher content.

Each rank tier features a designated Royale challenge that typically involves a battle against a particularly strong trainer or a Rogue Mega Evolution encounter. Clearing these is required to advance.

FAQ

Is Pokémon Legends: Z-A turn-based?

No. Pokémon Legends: Z-A uses a real-time combat system. You, your Pokémon, and opponents can all move freely in a 3D arena during battle. Moves are mapped to face buttons with individual cooldown timers rather than the traditional turn-based 'pick a move from a menu' system. Type matchups still apply, but timing and positioning now matter alongside type strategy.

What are the starters in Pokémon Legends: Z-A?

The three starter Pokémon are Chikorita (Grass type), Tepig (Fire type), and Totodile (Water type). Your in-game friend takes the two you didn't choose, so all three are available in your playthrough. Each evolves along its traditional line — Chikorita into Meganium, Tepig into Emboar, and Totodile into Feraligatr — and each final evolution receives a unique Mega Evolution form.

How many Mega Evolutions are in Pokémon Legends: Z-A?

The base game features 62 Mega Evolution forms in total. This includes 26 new Mega forms created specifically for Pokémon Legends: Z-A (including the three starter final evolutions) as well as 36 returning Mega forms from Pokémon X, Y, and ORAS such as Mega Lucario and Mega Garchomp. The Mega Dimension DLC released 10 December 2025 added additional Mega forms and the Mythical Pokémon Hoopa.

Is there breeding in Pokémon Legends: Z-A?

No. Pokémon Legends: Z-A does not include breeding, eggs, or Pokémon Abilities — all three features that appear in the mainline series are absent. Team-building relies entirely on catching wild Pokémon across Lumiose City's Wild Zones and on the stat growth of your caught Pokémon through battles and leveling.

How do I unlock Mega Evolution in Pokémon Legends: Z-A?

Mega Evolution for your starter Pokémon becomes available after completing Main Mission 10: 'The Secrets of Mega Evolution.' AZ, a character connected to the Kalos region's past, gives you the Mega Stone corresponding to your chosen starter after you return to Hotel Z following this mission. Mega Stones for the two starters you didn't choose are unlocked in the post-game Stone Emporium for 100,000 Pokédollars each.

Is Pokémon Legends: Z-A on PC?

No. Pokémon Legends: Z-A is a Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive and is not available on PC, PlayStation, or Xbox. The game is published by Nintendo and The Pokémon Company, and Nintendo exclusivity applies to all first-party and second-party Pokémon titles.
