Pokémon Legends: Z-A Type Chart All 18 Types Explained

Updated July 20268 min readBy the HowToPlayHub team

Pokémon Legends: Z-A uses the same 18-type system as modern mainline Pokémon games — Scarlet and Violet, Sword and Shield, and Pokémon X and Y. Type matchups determine damage multipliers in the real-time combat system exactly as they do in traditional turn-based Pokémon: super-effective hits deal ×2 damage, not-very-effective hits deal ×0.5, and immune types take ×0 damage. Understanding the type chart is the single most important piece of knowledge for winning battles and Rogue Mega Evolution encounters in Lumiose City.

01How Type Effectiveness Works

Every move in Pokémon Legends: Z-A has a type, and every Pokémon has one or two types. Damage is multiplied based on how the move's type interacts with the defender's type:

For dual-type Pokémon, both type interactions are multiplied together:

In Pokémon Legends: Z-A's real-time system, type matchups are immediately visible in battle — a 'Super Effective' indicator appears when your move lands for ×2 or ×4 damage.

02Offensive Type Matchups — What Each Type Hits Hard

Each type's super-effective offensive targets:

03Type Immunities — Complete Zero-Damage Matchups

These type matchups deal absolutely zero damage — the defending type is fully immune:

Immunities are especially important in the Z-A Royale. If your entire move set is blocked by an immunity, you deal zero damage. Always carry at least one move of a coverage type to handle immune matchups, and know which Mega forms are immune to which of your moves before entering ranked battles.

FAQ

How many types are in Pokémon Legends: Z-A?

Pokémon Legends: Z-A uses the standard 18-type system from modern Pokémon games: Normal, Fire, Water, Electric, Grass, Ice, Fighting, Poison, Ground, Flying, Psychic, Bug, Rock, Ghost, Dragon, Dark, Steel, and Fairy. No new types were introduced in this entry compared to the mainline games.

What type beats Dragon in Pokémon Legends: Z-A?

Three types are super effective against Dragon: Ice (×2), Dragon (×2), and Fairy (×2). Fairy is especially strong because Dragon-type moves deal zero damage to Fairy types — meaning Fairy Pokémon both resist Dragon attacks and hit back super effectively. Mega Meganium's Grass/Fairy typing makes it immune to Dragon attacks entirely.

What is the best coverage type in Pokémon Legends: Z-A?

Ice is widely considered the most efficient single coverage type because it hits four types super effectively: Grass, Ground, Flying, and Dragon. These types are common in the later Wild Zones and the Z-A Royale competitive ranks. Adding an Ice-type move to any team member provides substantial coverage across otherwise difficult matchups.

Is the type chart different in Pokémon Legends: Z-A from Scarlet and Violet?

No. The type effectiveness chart in Pokémon Legends: Z-A is identical to the one used in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet and all other modern Pokémon games that use the full 18-type system. Fairy was the last type added to the series (in Pokémon X and Y in 2013) and no new types have been introduced since.

What types does Mega Feraligatr have and what are its weaknesses?

Mega Feraligatr is Water/Dragon type. Its weaknesses are Electric (×2), Grass (×2), Dragon (×2), and Fairy (×2). The Fairy weakness is new compared to base Feraligatr (pure Water type) — plan your team composition to cover this gap, especially in the Z-A Royale where Fairy types are relatively common.
