Pokémon Legends: Z-A All Legendary Pokémon How to Catch Xerneas, Yveltal, Zygarde & Mewtwo

Updated July 202610 min readBy the HowToPlayHub team

Pokémon Legends: Z-A features four legendary Pokémon, all of which become available only after you finish the main story in Lumiose City. Xerneas and Yveltal are unlocked through a pair of parallel post-game main quests, Zygarde waits in a brutal three-phase gauntlet at Wild Zone 20, and Mewtwo is accessible through the Project M side mission tied to a Mystery Gift. This guide covers every step for all four, with recommended team levels and type counters for each encounter.

01Post-Game Unlock Condition

None of the four legendary Pokémon are available during the main story of Pokémon Legends: Z-A. The post-game begins after you complete the final main mission involving Quasartico Inc. and return to Hotel Z, where you encounter Trainer L. Progressing through Trainer L's post-game sequence is the prerequisite that opens up all legendary encounters.

Once Trainer L's storyline is underway, two parallel post-game main quests unlock on your mission board: 'The One That Gives' (Xerneas) and 'The One That Takes' (Yveltal). You can pursue these in either order, but both must be completed before Wild Zone 20 — and Zygarde — become accessible.

Mewtwo stands apart: it does not appear through any in-story quest. Catching it requires claiming a specific Mystery Gift (Project M) first. See the Mewtwo section for full details.

02Xerneas — Wild Zone 11 (Fairy, Level 75)

Xerneas is the first legendary most players encounter in the post-game. It is a pure Fairy type at level 75 and is weak to Poison and Steel. Bringing a strong Pokémon of either type is the most reliable way to lower its HP for the catch attempt.

Step 1: Accept quest 'The One That Gives'. After meeting Trainer L at Hotel Z, this quest appears on your mission board. Accept it to begin the Xerneas chain.

Step 2: Catch or defeat three Alpha Pokémon. The quest directs you to three designated Alpha Pokémon that appear in Wild Zones 3, 5, and 9. These are quest-specific Alpha encounters, not the standard Alpha Pokémon already roaming those zones. Complete all three in any order.

Step 3: Report back to Mable. After clearing the three Alpha encounters, speak with Mable. She reports detecting unusual energy concentrated in Wild Zone 11.

Step 4: Find Xerneas at Wild Zone 11 (northern canal bank). Travel to Wild Zone 11. Look for a glowing marker on the far side of the water channel. Approach it to trigger the Xerneas encounter. Xerneas spawns at level 75 and enters a standard real-time battle.

Tips for catching Xerneas:

03Yveltal — Galerie de la Lune Rooftop (Dark/Flying, Level 75)

Yveltal is a Dark/Flying type at level 75. Its weaknesses are Electric, Ice, Rock, and Fairy. It is immune to Ground moves (Flying) and to Psychic moves (Dark), so avoid both of those entirely. The encounter takes place on the rooftop of the Galerie de la Lune building — one of the more dramatic settings in the post-game.

Step 1: Accept quest 'The One That Takes'. This quest appears on your board at the same time as the Xerneas quest. You can pursue it in parallel — you do not need to catch Xerneas first.

Step 2: Speak with Griselle and Grisham at Centrico Plaza. Find the pair near the plaza. They are former Team Flare members familiar with both Xerneas and Yveltal from the events of Pokémon X and Y, and they agree to help you track Yveltal down.

Step 3: Clear the Quasartico Inc. simulation. Griselle and Grisham bring you to the Quasartico Inc. building, where you must defeat three consecutive Rogue Mega Pokémon in a training simulation: Rogue Mega Victreebel, Rogue Mega Hawlucha, and Rogue Mega Tyranitar. Heal your team between rounds where possible — this is a gauntlet.

Step 4: Confront Yveltal at Galerie de la Lune. After the simulation, Yveltal appears on the rooftop of Galerie de la Lune. Travel there and approach to trigger the battle. Yveltal appears at level 75.

Tips for catching Yveltal:

04Zygarde — Wild Zone 20, Three-Phase Gauntlet (Dragon/Ground, Level 84)

Zygarde is the hardest legendary encounter in the base game. It is a Dragon/Ground type at level 84 and fights across three consecutive phases without healing between them. Wild Zone 20 is located directly beneath the ruins of Prism Tower in Centrico Plaza and becomes accessible only after you have completed both the Xerneas and Yveltal quests and defeated Trainer L in their final challenge.

Recommended team level: 85–90. Going in at level 80 is possible but leaves very little margin if you take hits during Complete Forme's wide-area attacks.

Phase 1 — Zygarde 10% Forme (Dog Forme). Zygarde enters at level 84 in its small Dog Forme. This phase is relatively quick but deceptively fast — 10% Forme prioritizes speed and can chain attacks before you reset your positioning. Focus on building your Mega Gauge via orbs before committing to heavy offensive pressure.

Phase 2 — Zygarde 50% Forme (Serpent Forme). After depleting 10% Forme's HP, Zygarde transforms into its much larger serpent form without recovering HP. HP pool increases significantly and it gains Ground-type sweeping attacks that cover wide arcs of the arena. Maintain constant movement; standing still for more than two seconds is risky.

Phase 3 — Zygarde Complete Forme. The final and most dangerous phase. Complete Forme is enormous and uses a signature move called Land's Wrath that blankets most of the arena. In the first 30 seconds, prioritize learning the attack timing over dealing damage — dodge Land's Wrath consistently before extending offensive combos. Once you have the rhythm, Complete Forme falls quickly with super-effective Ice moves.

After depleting Complete Forme's HP, Zygarde reverts to 50% Forme and the catch phase begins. Zygarde is a guaranteed capture — any Poké Ball will work and it cannot break free, so there is no need to worry about catch rate or Ball selection here.

Type and team tips:

05Mewtwo — Project M Mystery Gift Side Mission (Psychic, Level 70)

Mewtwo is an optional fourth legendary available through the Project M side mission. It does not appear through any standard post-game story quest — you must first claim a specific Mystery Gift to unlock the mission.

How to start Project M:

  1. Press X to open the menu, then select Link Play.
  2. Select Mystery Gift, then choose Get via Internet.
  3. Claim the Project M gift. You receive Mewtwonite X and Mewtwonite Y directly in your bag, and the Project M side mission is added to your board.
  4. Accept the Project M mission from your board. Fast-travel to Lysandre Cafe (near Wild Zone 7), enter Lysandre Labs, and take the red elevator to Floor B3F. When you enter with both Mega Stones in your satchel, the locks disengage and Mewtwo appears.

Mewtwo appears at level 70 as a pure Psychic type. Its weaknesses are Dark, Ghost, and Bug. Dark-type Pokémon are the strongest counter here because they are immune to Psychic moves entirely — Mewtwo's main offensive type deals zero damage to Dark types. Umbreon, Weavile, Greninja (with Dark moves), and Tyranitar are all reliable options.

The two Mega Stones you receive from the Mystery Gift — Mewtwonite X and Mewtwonite Y — allow Mewtwo to Mega Evolve into two distinct forms after you catch it. Mega Mewtwo X is Psychic/Fighting; Mega Mewtwo Y is pure Psychic with massively boosted Special Attack. You keep both stones and choose which form to trigger in future battles.

Note on Mystery Gift availability: The Project M gift was originally distributed starting December 2025 via 'Get via Internet' (X → Link Play → Mystery Gift → Get via Internet). Mystery Gift events vary in duration — some run for months, others indefinitely. As of the time of writing, check Serebii.net or the official Pokémon website to confirm whether the internet distribution is currently active. If the internet event has ended, look for any active serial codes distributed by Nintendo or The Pokémon Company at promotional events.

06General Catch Tips and Recommended Preparation

Before pursuing any legendary, make sure your team and inventory are ready. Legendaries have low base catch rates and cannot always be reattempted easily.

FAQ

How many legendary Pokémon are in Pokémon Legends: Z-A?

Pokémon Legends: Z-A has four legendary Pokémon: Xerneas (Fairy, level 75), Yveltal (Dark/Flying, level 75), Zygarde (Dragon/Ground, level 84), and Mewtwo (Psychic, level 70). All four are post-game exclusive — none are catchable during the main story. Xerneas, Yveltal, and Zygarde are unlocked through post-game main quests, while Mewtwo requires the Project M Mystery Gift.

Can you catch all legendary Pokémon in one playthrough?

Yes. All four legendaries are available in a single playthrough. Xerneas and Yveltal unlock through parallel post-game quests that can be pursued simultaneously. Zygarde becomes available after both are completed. Mewtwo requires the Project M Mystery Gift — confirm its current availability via Serebii.net or the official Pokémon website, as Mystery Gift events can be time-limited.

What level is Zygarde in Pokémon Legends: Z-A?

Zygarde is level 84 throughout all three phases of its Wild Zone 20 encounter — 10% Forme, 50% Forme, and Complete Forme. The HP pool increases with each transformation, but the level stays at 84. The catch attempt begins after you deplete all three forms and Zygarde reverts to its 50% Forme. Bring a team at level 85–90 minimum.

How do I get Mewtwo in Pokémon Legends: Z-A?

Claim the Project M Mystery Gift via X → Link Play → Mystery Gift → Get via Internet. This delivers Mewtwonite X and Mewtwonite Y to your bag and adds the Project M side mission to your board. Then fast-travel to Lysandre Cafe (near Wild Zone 7), enter Lysandre Labs, and take the red elevator to Floor B3F — Mewtwo appears when you enter with both Mega Stones. Mewtwo is level 70, pure Psychic type — bring Dark, Ghost, or Bug counters. Check Serebii.net for current Mystery Gift availability.

What is Xerneas's weakness in Pokémon Legends: Z-A?

Xerneas is a pure Fairy type and is weak to Poison and Steel moves. Bring Poison-type Pokémon (Toxicroak, Scolipede, Roserade) or Steel-type Pokémon (Steelix, Metagross, Lucario) to deal super-effective damage and lower its HP safely before throwing Ultra Balls. Xerneas is found at Wild Zone 11 on the northern canal bank.

What is Yveltal's weakness in Pokémon Legends: Z-A?

Yveltal is Dark/Flying and is weak to Electric, Ice, Rock, and Fairy moves. It is fully immune to Ground (Flying) and to Psychic (Dark), so avoid both. Electric types like Jolteon and Magnezone and Ice types like Mamoswine and Cloyster are your strongest options. Yveltal is found on the rooftop of Galerie de la Lune after completing the 'The One That Takes' post-game quest.

Do I have to complete both Xerneas and Yveltal quests before fighting Zygarde?

Yes. Wild Zone 20 and the Zygarde encounter are locked behind story progression. You must complete both post-game main quests — 'The One That Gives' (Xerneas) and 'The One That Takes' (Yveltal) — and defeat Trainer L in their final challenge before Wild Zone 20 opens. The quests can be completed in any order relative to each other, but both must be done.
