Palworld Beginner's Guide — Everything You Need to Know

Updated July 20268 min readBy the HowToPlayHub team

Palworld drops you onto Palpagos Island with empty hands and a lot of hungry creatures staring you down. The survival loop — gather, build, catch, assign — clicks fast once you understand how its parts connect. The game launched its full 1.0 release on July 10, 2026, and the core early-game mechanics described here are stable for new characters on any server.

Quick answer

Focus your first hour on punching trees for wood, crafting Pal Spheres from Paldium Fragments, and placing a Palbox on flat ground near stone and ore. Weaken Pals before throwing a sphere, then assign every caught Pal to a base job immediately — idle Pals produce nothing. Unlock the Hot Spring early so your base keeps running while you explore.

01Your First 15 Minutes: Gathering and the Palbox

Punch trees and break rocks until you can build a Primitive Workbench, then craft a Stone Pickaxe and Stone Axe — these multiply your resource income and let you mine the blue glowing Paldium Fragments near water. Paldium is the core ingredient in every tier of Pal Sphere, so stockpile it.

Once you have 10 Wood and 10 Stone, build your first Palbox. Choose the spot carefully — the Palbox cannot be moved without losing base progress. Look for flat ground surrounded by trees, stone nodes, and at least one ore deposit, and avoid spots with aggressive Pals camped on them.

02How to Catch Pals: Spheres and the Weakening Loop

Catching Pals is the engine of all progression. To catch one, weaken it in combat first, then throw a Pal Sphere — the lower the Pal's HP, the higher the catch rate. Bringing a Pal to roughly 20–30% HP gives dramatically better odds than throwing immediately.

Sphere tier must roughly match the target's level; a basic Sphere on a high-level Pal has a steep catch-rate penalty. Craft Mega Spheres and later Giga Spheres as you level. Throwing a sphere at a Pal from behind also grants a meaningful catch bonus.

  1. Unlock Pal Sphere at Technology Level 2.
  2. Mine Paldium Fragments or run Stone through a Crusher at base.
  3. Reduce the target's HP to roughly 20–30%.
  4. Switch to a weak attack to avoid an accidental KO.
  5. Move behind the Pal and throw the sphere for the back-attack bonus.
  6. Step up sphere tiers (Mega → Giga → Hyper) as your level rises.

Never KO a Pal you want to keep — if you are overshooting HP, switch to bare fists or a very weak Pal to chip it down safely.

03Building a Base and Assigning Work Suitability

A Palbox turns the surrounding radius into your base. Every Pal assigned to the base finds a job matching its Work Suitability — a species-specific set of skills (rated Level 1–4) that determines which stations it can operate and how fast. A Pal with no matching suitability simply wanders and eats.

Build stations to match the Pals you have: a Stone Furnace needs a Pal with Kindling (e.g. Foxparks) to smelt ore into ingots; the Crusher needs Watering. Without the right Pal assigned, stations sit idle.

Assign every caught Pal to the base immediately. A Pal sitting unused produces zero output — even a Level 1 Transporting Pal speeds up your whole crafting pipeline.

04The Technology Tree: What to Unlock First

Technology Points come from leveling up and from catching new Pal species for the first time — a bonus that rewards variety over grinding one Pal. Spend them roughly in this order:

  1. Pal Sphere (Level 2) — catching is your main XP source.
  2. Stone Furnace — converts ore to ingots for all metal tools and weapons.
  3. Mega Sphere — improves catch rates on mid-level Pals.
  4. Hot Spring — restores Pal SAN passively; without it your base grinds to a halt.
  5. Pal Gear recipes — harnesses that let you ride Pals, glide, and carry more.
  6. Giga Sphere — needed before pushing into tougher biomes and Alpha encounters.

The Hot Spring is the most commonly skipped critical unlock — new players often wonder why their base Pals stop working, and low SAN is almost always the reason.

05Food, Hunger, and Pal SAN (Sanity)

Both you and your Pals run on hunger and SAN (Sanity). Cook Berries and Meat at a Cooking Pot and store food in a Feed Box so Pals eat automatically — cooked meals restore both hunger and SAN, while raw berries give no SAN benefit.

SAN drops when Pals work without rest, go hungry, face temperature extremes, or walk long distances between tasks. When SAN falls low, Pals idle, sleep on the ground, or refuse to staff stations. Counter it:

06Early Boss Fights: Alpha Pals and the First Tower

Palworld has two boss types: Alpha Pals (oversized named wild Pals) and Tower Bosses (human trainers and their boss Pal). Both drop rare loot and grant big XP.

Chillet (Ice/Dragon, around Level 11) near the Bamboo Grove is a common first Alpha — weak to Dragon attacks; aim to be Level 10–12 and keep moving. Catching an Alpha gives a boosted-stat variant, so weaken and throw a sphere rather than killing it.

The first Tower Boss (Zoe and Grizzbolt) is recommended around Level 12–15. Grizzbolt is Electric-type, so bring Ground Pals. Tower Bosses cannot be caught and are required for story progression.

FAQ

How do I get more Pal Spheres early in Palworld?

Mine blue Paldium Fragment nodes near rivers and coastlines — the key ingredient in every sphere tier — and combine them with Wood and Stone at your Workbench from Technology Level 2. Once you have a Crusher with a Watering-type Pal assigned, you can also feed Stone into it to produce Paldium passively.

Why do my base Pals stop working and just wander around?

Low SAN (Sanity) is almost always the cause. Pals lose SAN from overwork, hunger, long travel paths, and temperature extremes. Build a Hot Spring, keep a Feed Box stocked with cooked food, and group your stations close together to minimise travel time.

What is the best spot for my first base?

Flat ground with trees, stone, and at least one ore deposit inside the Palbox radius — ore is your main early bottleneck. Avoid placing the Palbox near aggressive Alpha Pals. The area around the starting plateau meets most of these criteria and is a reliable first choice.

Does Palworld v1.0 change anything for new players?

Palworld 1.0 launched on July 10, 2026 and ended Early Access. It added 72 new Pals (total 287), two new regions (Sunreach and the World Tree), a raised level cap of 80, and an expanded endgame — but the core early loop described in this guide (catching Pals, building a base, tech-tree unlocks) is unchanged. If you are starting fresh, the early game plays the same way it always has; the new content begins in the mid-to-late game once you reach the original Tower Bosses and beyond.
