Palworld Base Building Guide — Automate, Defend, Thrive

Updated July 20269 min readBy the HowToPlayHub team

Building a base in Palworld is more than dropping walls and a campfire. It is a living production system where the Pals you assign, the food you provide, and the layout you choose decide whether your camp hums with efficiency or grinds to a halt. This guide walks through every layer — from your first Palbox to wiring up electricity and repelling late-game raids.

Quick answer

Place a Palbox to found a base, then assign Pals whose work suitability matches your structures — the right match is the single biggest driver of production speed. Keep the Feed Box stocked, beds available, and a Hot Spring built to prevent sanity collapse. You can run up to three bases at once (as of the current version), so plan each around a different resource or production goal.

01The Palbox: Foundation of Every Base

Every base begins with a Palbox, which defines a roughly circular base boundary. Everything inside it forms your settlement; structures placed outside the boundary slowly deteriorate, so always build inward.

You start with one base slot. A second unlocks when your first base reaches level 10, and a third at base level 15. As of the current version you can run up to three bases at once, letting you dedicate each to a resource region or role — for example a mining base, a farming base, and a crafting hub.

Base level rises by completing the base tasks shown in the Palbox menu, and higher levels raise the Pal capacity (default 15 per base, rising further with world settings and updates). Higher-suitability Pals matter far more than raw numbers — quality beats quantity at every stage.

02Essential Early Structures — Build These First

Rushing fancy automation before the basics results in starving, sleep-deprived Pals. Lay this foundation first:

  1. Palbox on flat ground away from cliff edges so Pals path freely.
  2. Workbench — needed to craft everything else.
  3. Campfire / Cooking Pot — cooked food restores more SAN than raw berries.
  4. Feed Box — the central food dispenser; place it centrally so Pals reach it fast.
  5. Pal Beds — one per assigned Pal; Pals without a bed cannot sleep and lose SAN fast.
  6. Berry Plantation — a renewable food source needing a Planting and a Watering Pal.
  7. Chest — dedicated storage so Pals do not misroute resources.
  8. Hot Spring — the most efficient SAN recovery; build it as soon as it unlocks.

03Pal Work Suitability: The Core of Automation

Every Pal has work suitability ratings across up to 12 job types — Planting, Watering, Mining, Lumbering, Kindling, Handiwork, Transporting, Gathering, Generating Electricity, Medicine, Cooling, and Farming — rated 1 (basic) to 4 (exceptional). Assigning a Pal to a station it has no suitability for means it ignores the job; assigning a low-level Pal to a job a Lv. 4 Pal could do means it runs at a fraction of potential.

Review the auto-assignment whenever you add a Pal — it is a reasonable starting point but rarely optimal. The Pal Essence Condenser can push a Pal's suitability one tier higher by fusing duplicates.

04Feeding, Sanity, and Keeping Pals Productive

A Pal's SAN (sanity) governs its willingness to work. Sanity drains from labor, sleep deprivation, and travel; when it falls low a Pal goofs off, refuses tasks, and needs intervention. Prevention is simpler than recovery.

The Feed Box is the primary care tool — Pals visit it when hungry, so it must never be empty. Food quality matters: Salads and cooked meals extend work intervals and add a SAN bonus, while raw berries do little.

05Electricity and Advanced Automation

Mid-game machines — Electric Furnaces, Weapon Assembly Lines, Crude Oil Extractors — run on electricity. The Power Generator unlocks in the late 20s and must be charged by a Pal with the Generating Electricity suitability.

Connect structures with Electric Cables in Build Mode — a lightning icon on a machine's UI confirms it is powered.

06Layout, Terrain, and Defending Against Raids

Terrain is the most overlooked efficiency factor. Pals path in straight lines where possible; cliffs and odd-angle walls become invisible barriers that leave them idle. Build on naturally flat ground or lay Foundations first, and add stairs between levels since Pals cannot jump to upper floors.

Cluster functions: a production zone (furnaces, benches) on one side, a farming zone (plantation, ranch, Feed Box) adjacent, and sleeping quarters (beds, Hot Spring) between so Pals recover near where they work.

Palworld 1.0 (July 2026) added the Aquatic Construction Kit, unlocked in the Ancient Technology tree (around player level 66), which lets you build bases along shorelines and out over open water using floating foundations and pillars. Coastal and offshore bases follow the same layout principles — flat (or flat-foundation) ground, clustered stations — but give access to unique aquatic resources.

Raids trigger periodically and scale with base level — hostile Pals target structures. Counter them:

FAQ

How many bases can you have in Palworld?

As of the current version you can run up to three bases simultaneously in the base game. The second slot unlocks when your first base reaches level 10, and the third at base level 15. World settings can adjust this cap on private servers.

How do I stop my Pals from getting depressed at the base?

Sanity loss is driven by overwork, poor food, and lack of sleep. Build a Hot Spring as soon as it unlocks and provide one Pal Bed per base Pal. Stock the Feed Box with cooked food rather than raw berries, and assign Pals with the Workaholic passive, which drains SAN more slowly.

Do I need electricity early in the game?

No. Electricity is a mid-to-late-game system. Early bases run on manual benches, furnaces, and campfires. Focus on a solid feed loop, correct work assignments, and leveling the base before investing in power infrastructure.

Why are my Pals not working in the base?

The usual causes are: no matching work suitability for available structures, hunger (empty Feed Box), low SAN, no available bed, or terrain blocking pathfinding. Check the Palbox management tab to confirm each Pal has a station matching its suitability, then check the Feed Box and bed count. If a Pal is stuck, pick it up and place it near its station to reset its pathing.
