Halo: Campaign Evolved Operation: Meteorite Guide

Operation: Meteorite is the single biggest new addition to Halo: Campaign Evolved's story — a three-mission prequel arc that didn't exist in the original 2001 campaign. It's built by Halo Studios in collaboration with veteran Halo novelist Troy Denning, and it's included with every copy of the game, not sold separately. Here's what's officially confirmed about the setting, story, enemies, and how it fits into the rest of the campaign.

01What Is Operation: Meteorite?

Operation: Meteorite is a three-mission prequel story arc built directly into Halo: Campaign Evolved. It is not paid DLC and not a pre-order bonus — it ships as part of the base game in every edition (Standard, Digital Premium, and the sold-out Collector's Edition).

The arc is set in 2551, one year before the events of Halo: Combat Evolved. It follows Master Chief and Sergeant Major Avery Johnson on an infiltration mission aboard a Covenant research vessel called the Triumph of Tolerance, which is in orbit over Promise, a human colony the Covenant has already glassed.

Halo Waypoint has described Johnson's role in Operation: Meteorite as larger than anything fans have previously seen him get in a mainline campaign — this arc puts him alongside Master Chief as a genuine second protagonist rather than a supporting radio voice.

02The Story: Objective and Setting

The stated mission objective is to acquire navigation data from the Triumph of Tolerance that could lead the UNSC toward the Covenant's homeworld — official materials describe this as "laying the groundwork for Operation: RED FLAG," a future operation referenced but not detailed within Campaign Evolved itself.

The antagonist introduced for this arc is the Minister of Harmony, a San'Shyuum (the Covenant race Prophets belong to) who is shown conducting experiments on Covenant client species aboard the research vessel. This gives Operation: Meteorite its own villain, distinct from the Halo: Combat Evolved campaign's antagonists.

Enemy forces include standard Covenant troops, Sacristan warriors, and a new Brute variant called the Berserker — triggered by an electrical device on its chest and prone to attacking friend and foe alike. Expect the mix to skew toward Covenant infantry and boarding-action combat given the setting aboard an enemy ship.

03How Operation: Meteorite Fits the Full Campaign

Because it's built into the base game rather than gated behind an unlock, Operation: Meteorite is available to every player from launch — there's no confirmation that you need to finish the main Halo: Combat Evolved campaign first before playing it.

It's a prequel, so it doesn't interrupt or replace any of the original 10 remastered campaign missions. Think of it as a self-contained three-mission bridge that expands the story before the events players already know, rather than a side mode bolted onto the main game.

04Weapons and Combat

Halo: Campaign Evolved's expanded weapon sandbox — confirmed to include every original Halo: Combat Evolved weapon plus nine additional weapons pulled from across the wider Halo series — applies throughout the campaign, including Operation: Meteorite. Officially named additions include the Energy Sword, Battle Rifle, Needle Rifle, and Brute Plasma Rifle.

Given the shipboard infiltration setting and the presence of Sacristan warriors and armored Brutes, expect more close-quarters boarding-action combat than the open Halo ringworld terrain the original campaign is known for — closer in spirit to the Covenant ship levels from the original game's later missions.

05Troy Denning's Involvement and the Hungry Buzzards Short Story

Halo Studios worked closely with Troy Denning, an award-winning Halo novelist with seven prior Halo novels to his name (including Silent Storm) — Hungry Buzzards makes his eighth — on the story for Operation: Meteorite.

Denning also wrote a companion short story, "Halo: Hungry Buzzards," which acts as a prequel to Operation: Meteorite itself — it shows Master Chief demonstrating Spartan capabilities to Colonel James Ackerson at a UNSC testing facility on Reach, shortly before the team deploys on the mission covered in-game.

Hungry Buzzards is bundled with the Digital Premium Edition and the Collector's Edition — it is not included with the Standard Edition. Halo Waypoint calls it "an essential companion piece," but the in-game missions are fully self-contained and playable without having read it; it adds backstory and context rather than information required to follow the plot.

06Release Date, Platforms, and Early Access

Operation: Meteorite releases alongside the rest of Halo: Campaign Evolved on July 28, 2026. Digital Premium Edition and Collector's Edition owners get up to five days of early access starting July 23, 2026.

The game — and Operation: Meteorite with it — is available on Xbox Series X|S, PC (Steam), and PlayStation 5. This marks the first mainline Halo campaign to launch on PlayStation. It's also included in Xbox Game Pass.

Full campaign co-op applies to Operation: Meteorite as well: four-player online co-op with cross-platform play, plus two-player split-screen on console.
