Halo: Campaign Evolved Difficulty Guide — LASO, Co-op Scaling & Achievement Tips
Halo: Campaign Evolved has four difficulty levels — each with its own named achievement — plus a separate LASO challenge that pairs Legendary with a curated set of 17 Skulls for the series' hardest-yet run. Add per-player Difficulty Modifiers that can silently block achievement unlocks, and co-op scaling that ratchets up enemy rank as your squad grows, and difficulty is a system worth understanding before you start. Here's how all of it works.
Halo: Campaign Evolved has four difficulties, each with a named achievement: Easy ('Greenhorn', 10G), Normal ('Birth of a Spartan', 20G), Heroic ('Heroes Never Die', 30G), and Legendary ('Living Legend', 40G). LASO pairs Legendary with 17 specifically curated Skulls (full list confirmed on Halo Waypoint) and awards the 50G 'MYTHIC' achievement. In co-op, adding players raises enemy rank and makes AI more aggressive on top of your chosen difficulty. Any active Difficulty Modifier (Damage Resistance, Melee Damage Modifier, etc.) for any player in the Fireteam blocks specific higher-difficulty achievements for the whole session — Heroic, Legendary, and LASO completions are blocked, while Easy ('Greenhorn') and Normal ('Birth of a Spartan') completions remain earnable.
01The Four Campaign Difficulties — and Their Achievements
Every full-campaign completion at each difficulty earns a distinct named achievement. The gamerscore values scale intentionally, giving you a natural progression goal if you're working toward a full achievement haul:
- Easy — 'Greenhorn' (10G): Reduced enemy aggression and a forgiving combat balance, designed for players new to first-person shooters or anyone who wants to focus on the story without getting frequently stuck on encounters.
- Normal — 'Birth of a Spartan' (20G): The midpoint where Covenant AI is active and resource pressure begins to matter, but the encounter design isn't intended to halt your progress for long. A reasonable baseline for the story experience.
- Heroic — 'Heroes Never Die' (30G): The classic Halo challenge — enemies respond faster, make better use of cover, and hit meaningfully harder. This is the difficulty where the encounter design was originally meant to be experienced, and returning Halo veterans will recognise it as the natural home for a first playthrough.
- Legendary — 'Living Legend' (40G): The highest base difficulty. Enemy ranks increase, Covenant units behave more tactically, and a single lapse in shield management can end a run quickly. It's a materially different game than Normal on the same missions — expect to learn encounter layouts rather than brute-forcing through them.
These achievements are awarded per difficulty completed — finishing Legendary does not automatically stack achievements for lower tiers. Run whichever tier you're targeting as a deliberate playthrough.
02LASO: Legendary + 17 Skulls, Confirmed Modifiers & the MYTHIC Achievement
LASO (Legendary All Skulls On) is Campaign Evolved's prestige challenge and the route to the 50G 'MYTHIC' achievement — but it works differently here than in earlier Halo LASO runs you might know from the Master Chief Collection.
- LASO = Legendary + 17 specifically curated Skulls, not all 42. Halo Studios selected a subset of the full Skull roster for LASO rather than enabling every modifier simultaneously. The full list of the 17 Skulls was confirmed in a pre-launch Co-Op, Remix, & LASO Livestream on Halo Waypoint — check that post for the complete breakdown.
- Confirmed LASO modifiers include: motion tracker disabled (HUD radar off), increased enemy HP across all encounter types, weapons dropped by killed enemies spawn at 50% ammo capacity, auto-aim fully deactivated on every weapon (both controller aim-assist and mouse aim-assist are removed), and double explosive radius on all explosives.
- The doubled explosive radius applies to both enemy and player explosives — grenade-heavy tactics that work on standard Legendary carry real self-damage risk on LASO.
- Because the motion tracker is off and auto-aim is removed, LASO rewards knowing patrol routes and enemy weak points from a prior Legendary run. Going in blind is significantly harder than starting with that map knowledge.
The 42 Skulls available in Campaign Evolved — including 26 legacy skulls drawn from across previous Halo titles and the 16 new ones built for this remake — are covered in detail in our Skulls and Campaign Remix guide.
03Co-op Difficulty Scaling — What Changes When You Squad Up
Difficulty in Campaign Evolved doesn't stay static when you add co-op partners. The game scales enemy composition and behavior based on Fireteam size, stacking on top of whatever difficulty setting you've chosen:
- Higher enemy rank: More players in the Fireteam causes the game to substitute in stronger enemy variants — encounters shift toward more elite or higher-ranked units to match the squad's combined damage output.
- Grenade avoidance: Enemy AI dodges grenades more reliably in larger sessions, reducing the effectiveness of grenade-spam strategies that work consistently in solo play.
- More effective return fire: Enemies adjust their shooting patterns to track and suppress players more aggressively, accounting for the increased damage a larger squad brings.
- Shield recharge behaviour: Enemy units with shields (notably Elites) manage their shield recharge timing differently in co-op, making it harder to catch them mid-recharge with a targeted shot.
- These changes compound with the base difficulty setting — a 4-player Legendary session is noticeably different from solo Legendary, not just a case of having more players to spread the same enemy HP across.
Attempting LASO in co-op means the difficulty scaling is active on top of LASO's already demanding Skull set. For co-op setup — crossplay, drop-in/drop-out, and split-screen specifics — see the co-op guide.
04Difficulty Modifiers — The Personal Sliders That Block Achievements
Campaign Evolved includes a set of personal Difficulty Modifiers you can enable to adjust your own play experience. They're useful tools for working through tough sections, but there's a critical catch if you're playing for achievements:
- Confirmed modifiers include: Damage Resistance (you take less damage), Shield Recharge Rate (your shields replenish faster), Damage Modifier (you deal more damage), and Melee Damage Modifier (your melee hits harder). The system also includes ammo-related options such as Infinite Ammo and Bottomless Clip.
- If any player in the Fireteam has any modifier active, specific achievements are blocked for the entire session — the Heroic completion ('Heroes Never Die'), Legendary completion ('Living Legend'), and LASO completion ('MYTHIC') are blocked, along with a number of skull-based and gameplay-specific achievements. Easy ('Greenhorn') and Normal ('Birth of a Spartan') completions are not blocked. This applies to every player in the squad, not just the one with the modifier on.
- This means if you're the host running clean and a co-op partner has Damage Resistance enabled, no one in the session earns those blocked achievements at the end. Before any Heroic-or-higher or LASO achievement run, confirm every player has all modifiers off.
- Difficulty Modifiers don't affect which difficulty label your run carries — you can still play Legendary with them active, but the completion achievement won't register.
Treat achievement runs and assisted runs as separate sessions. Difficulty Modifiers are genuinely useful for helping a friend through hard encounters or exploring the campaign without friction — just not during a run where the achievement is the goal.
05Which Difficulty Should You Start On
The right starting difficulty depends on your background with the franchise and what you're after:
- New to Halo or first-person shooters: Normal is a solid starting point. It gives you the full combat experience — AI that makes real decisions, resource pressure that matters — without the encounter design becoming a wall that halts progress for long stretches.
- Returning Halo player or confident FPS player: Start on Heroic. It's the difficulty where the encounter design was built to be experienced, and the 30G 'Heroes Never Die' achievement reflects that.
- Achievement hunter going for the full set: Consider running Legendary first rather than working up through each tier. The 40G 'Living Legend' is a significant investment either way, and a full Legendary playthrough teaches you mission layouts, enemy patrol patterns, and ammo distribution — all of which matter for LASO.
- Ready for LASO: Don't attempt it blind. The combination of no motion tracker, disabled auto-aim, increased enemy HP, and half ammo from kills makes prior Legendary knowledge close to a prerequisite. The LASO Skull list was confirmed in a pre-launch livestream on Halo Waypoint — check the Co-Op, Remix, & LASO Livestream post there before committing to a run strategy.
FAQ
What are the difficulty levels in Halo: Campaign Evolved?
There are four: Easy, Normal, Heroic, and Legendary. Each awards a named achievement on full-campaign completion — 'Greenhorn' (10G), 'Birth of a Spartan' (20G), 'Heroes Never Die' (30G), and 'Living Legend' (40G) respectively. These stack separately; completing Legendary doesn't automatically award lower-tier achievements.
What is LASO in Halo: Campaign Evolved?
LASO is Legendary difficulty with 17 specifically chosen Skulls active simultaneously — not all 42. Completing a full campaign run under those conditions earns the 50G 'MYTHIC' achievement. Confirmed LASO modifiers include no motion tracker, increased enemy HP, half ammo from killed enemies, disabled auto-aim, and doubled explosive radius. The full list of 17 Skulls was confirmed in a pre-launch LASO livestream on Halo Waypoint.
Does co-op make the campaign harder in Halo: Campaign Evolved?
Yes. Adding more players to a Fireteam causes the game to spawn higher-rank enemy variants and makes enemy AI more aggressive — better at dodging grenades, more effective at return fire, and with different shield recharge behaviour. These changes stack on top of whatever difficulty you've set, so 4-player Legendary plays noticeably differently from solo Legendary.
Why didn't my difficulty achievement unlock in Halo: Campaign Evolved?
The most common cause is an active Difficulty Modifier. If any player in your Fireteam has any modifier enabled (Damage Resistance, Shield Recharge Rate, Damage Modifier, Melee Damage Modifier, or ammo options), 'Heroes Never Die' (Heroic), 'Living Legend' (Legendary), 'MYTHIC' (LASO), and a number of skull-based and gameplay-specific achievements are blocked for the entire session. Note that Easy ('Greenhorn') and Normal ('Birth of a Spartan') completions are not blocked by modifiers. Confirm every player has all modifiers off before starting a Heroic-or-higher or LASO achievement run.
How many Skulls are required for LASO?
17 specifically curated Skulls, active alongside Legendary difficulty. Halo Studios didn't select all 42 Skulls for LASO — only a subset. The full list of which 17 was confirmed in a pre-launch LASO livestream on Halo Waypoint. The confirmed modifiers within that set include no motion tracker, increased enemy HP, half ammo from enemy drops, disabled auto-aim, and doubled explosive radius.
Do Difficulty Modifiers affect which achievements I can earn?
Yes — but the scope is broader than just difficulty-completion achievements. If any modifier is active for any player in the Fireteam, 'Heroes Never Die' (Heroic), 'Living Legend' (Legendary), and 'MYTHIC' (LASO) are blocked, as are a number of skull-based and gameplay-specific achievements. Easy ('Greenhorn') and Normal ('Birth of a Spartan') completions are not blocked by modifiers. Use modifiers freely in casual sessions, and turn them all off when you're aiming for Heroic-or-higher, LASO, or any skull-based achievement.
