Elden Ring Nightreign Everdark Sovereigns & Deep of Night, Explained
Once you've cleared the base version of a Nightlord, Nightreign doesn't just let you retire the fight — it opens up a harder version of it. Everdark Sovereigns are enhanced Nightlord encounters with new phases and much higher stakes, and Deep of Night is the mode where they show up unannounced. Our Nightlord boss guide covers the standard fights; this one covers what changes once you're ready for the harder versions.
01What Is an Everdark Sovereign?
An Everdark Sovereign is an upgraded version of a Nightlord you've already beaten — same boss, same expedition type, but built to challenge players who already know the base fight. Everdark Sovereigns keep the boss's core identity and elemental weakness, but add:
- A boss that starts already in its second phase. The opening phase you'd normally have to fight through to see the Nightlord's full moveset is skipped — you're straight into advanced attacks from the first hit.
- An entirely additional phase once the boss drops below 50% HP, on top of the phase-two moveset it already started with.
- Greatly increased HP and more aggressive AI compared to the standard fight, meaning the encounter runs longer and punishes passive play harder.
The first two nights of the three-day expedition play out identically to a normal run — Everdark only changes the Day 3 boss fight itself.
02How to Unlock an Everdark Sovereign
You have to beat the standard version of a Nightlord before its Everdark Sovereign becomes available — there's no way to skip straight to the hard mode of a boss you haven't cleared yet. Once unlocked, you can select that specific Everdark Sovereign expedition directly from the Roundtable Hold, the same way you'd pick any other expedition type, rather than leaving it to chance — though which Sovereigns are actually on offer rotates on a weekly schedule, and Everdark Sovereign expeditions require an online connection.
That direct-select option is different from encountering one through Deep of Night, covered next — Deep of Night can hand you an Everdark Sovereign fight even if you didn't specifically choose one.
03Deep of Night Mode
Deep of Night is a separate, higher-difficulty mode built around uncertainty rather than boss selection, unlocked after you've defeated Heolstor, the Night Aspect, in a standard expedition. A few things distinguish it from a normal or direct Everdark Sovereign expedition:
- You can't choose your Nightlord, but you do see which one you've got. Unlike a standard expedition, Deep of Night assigns your target Nightlord at random rather than letting you pick — but that Nightlord is still shown on the Character Selection screen and the map at the start of the expedition, the same as a normal run. What you don't know in advance is whether that Nightlord will turn out to be its empowered Everdark Sovereign version.
- Everdark Sovereigns only appear here at higher Depth ratings. Depth is a rank that rises when you clear a Deep of Night expedition and falls when you fail one. At Depth 1 there's no chance of facing an Everdark Sovereign; the odds rise at Depth 2 and above, and you won't know whether you're facing the empowered version until you reach the boss arena.
- Shifting Earth modifiers don't apply. Deep of Night runs ignore the map-altering Shifting Earth event rotation that regular expeditions use.
- Enemies hit harder throughout the run, not just at the final boss — expect Day 1 and Day 2 encounters to be tougher than a standard expedition at the same nominal difficulty, and at higher Depths some field enemies and mini-bosses can appear as tougher red-tinted variants.
The practical effect: going into Deep of Night, you can't gear specifically around one Nightlord's weakness the way you can for a direct Everdark Sovereign pick, and you won't know if you're getting the harder Everdark version of that boss until the fight starts. A more generalist loadout is the safer bet.
04All Everdark Sovereigns
Every base-game Nightlord except Heolstor (the Night Aspect / true final boss) has an Everdark Sovereign version. Weaknesses carry over from the standard fight — see our Nightlord boss guide for full moveset breakdowns of the base encounters. The Forsaken Hollows DLC also added an eighth Everdark Sovereign, Weapon-Bequeathed Harmonia (weak to Sleep), for the DLC's Balancers Nightlord — see our Forsaken Hollows boss guide for that fight:
- Tricephalos (Gladius, Beast of Night) — weak to Holy.
- Gaping Jaw (Adel, Baron of Night) — weak to Poison buildup.
- Sentient Pest (Gnoster, Wisdom of Night) — weak to Fire.
- Augur (Maris, Fathom of Night) — weak to Lightning.
- Equilibrious Beast (Libra, Creature of Night) — weak to Madness buildup.
- Darkdrift Knight (Fulghor, Champion of Nightglow) — weak to Lightning.
- Fissure in the Fog (Caligo, Miasma of Night) — weak to Fire.
Elemental weaknesses don't change between the standard and Everdark version of a fight — what changes is the moveset, HP pool, and aggression. Build the same way you would for the base Nightlord, just don't expect the early, easier phase-one window you'd normally get to warm up in.
05Rewards: Sovereign Sigils
Beating an Everdark Sovereign for the first time awards a meaningfully larger one-time payout of Sovereign Sigils — a currency you won't get anywhere else. Repeat clears of the same Everdark Sovereign still pay out Sigils, but noticeably less than that first-clear bonus.
Sovereign Sigils are spent at the Collector Signboard in the Roundtable Hold, where they unlock Garbs (cosmetic sets), Chalices, and unique Relics that aren't available through normal expedition drops. If you're chasing a specific relic or cosmetic locked behind Sovereign Sigils, direct-selecting the Everdark Sovereign you've already learned is more reliable than farming Deep of Night's random pool.
FAQ
How do you unlock Everdark Sovereigns in Nightreign?
Beat the standard version of a Nightlord first. Once you have, its Everdark Sovereign expedition becomes selectable directly from the Roundtable Hold — though which ones are actually on offer rotates weekly, and it requires an online connection. You can also encounter Everdark Sovereigns through Deep of Night mode at Depth 2 and above, without needing to have specifically unlocked that one yet through a normal clear — but Deep of Night itself only opens up after you've defeated Heolstor, the Night Aspect, in a standard expedition.
What's the difference between Deep of Night and a normal Everdark Sovereign expedition?
Picking an Everdark Sovereign directly from the Roundtable Hold lets you choose exactly which boss you're fighting, so you can build around its specific weakness. Deep of Night assigns your Nightlord at random instead — you still see which Nightlord it is on the Character Selection screen and map before the expedition starts, but you won't know if it's the empowered Everdark Sovereign version until you reach the boss arena. Deep of Night also ignores Shifting Earth modifiers and generally throws tougher enemies at you throughout the run, not just at the final boss.
How much harder are Everdark Sovereigns than the base Nightlord fight?
Significantly. The boss skips its easier phase-one moveset and starts already in phase two, then gains an entirely new phase once it drops below 50% HP on top of that. HP is greatly increased and the AI is more aggressive throughout, so the fight both starts harder and lasts longer than the standard version.
Do all Nightlords have an Everdark Sovereign version?
All seven of the base game's standard elemental Nightlords do — Tricephalos, Gaping Jaw, Sentient Pest, Augur, Equilibrious Beast, Darkdrift Knight, and Fissure in the Fog. Heolstor, the Night Aspect (the base game's true final boss), does not have an Everdark Sovereign version. The Forsaken Hollows DLC also added its own Everdark Sovereign, Weapon-Bequeathed Harmonia, for the DLC's Balancers Nightlord.
What are Sovereign Sigils used for?
Sovereign Sigils are earned by beating Everdark Sovereigns, with a first-time clear of a given Sovereign paying out noticeably more than repeat clears of the same fight. Spend them at the Collector Signboard in the Roundtable Hold for Garbs, Chalices, and unique Relics not available anywhere else.
Do elemental weaknesses change on the Everdark version of a Nightlord?
No. An Everdark Sovereign keeps the same elemental weakness as its standard counterpart — a Holy-infused build that works on Tricephalos still works on its Everdark Sovereign. What changes is the moveset, added phase, HP pool, and aggression, not the boss's underlying elemental profile.
