Elden Ring Nightreign Solo Guide Win Expeditions Alone
Elden Ring Nightreign — FromSoftware and Bandai Namco's co-op roguelike spin-off released May 30, 2025 — is designed around trios, but solo play is fully supported and has its own scaling rules that make it a genuinely different experience. Enemy HP drops to roughly one-third of trio values, you earn approximately 60% more runes per source, and a unique item called the Wending Grace allows a single self-resurrection on Day 2 and Day 3. This guide explains how to set up solo mode, which Nightfarers perform best alone, and how to structure your three days to consistently reach and beat the Nightlord.
01How to Start a Solo Expedition
Nightreign's default matchmaking attempts to fill your expedition with three players. To play solo, you must explicitly opt out:
- Load into the Roundtable Hold.
- Approach the Great Site of Grace in the centre of the main room.
- Interact with the grace and navigate to the Matchmaking Settings tab.
- Change the Expedition Type from 'Multiplayer' to 'Single Player'.
- Confirm your Nightfarer and relic selection, then begin the expedition as normal.
Solo mode is not a reduced-content mode — all Nightlords, expeditions, and rewards are available. The single-player setting persists until you change it back, so you do not need to re-enter it every run.
Note: Duo mode (two-player expeditions) was added in Patch 1.02 and uses its own intermediate HP scaling — roughly half of trio HP — that sits between solo and trio. If you prefer company but not a full three-player party, duo is a strong middle option.
02Solo Scaling: What Changes
FromSoftware adjusted several parameters for solo play to compensate for the absence of two teammates:
- Enemy and boss HP: All enemies encountered in solo mode have their HP reduced to approximately one-third of their trio-mode values. This applies to field enemies, mini-bosses on Days 1 and 2, and the final Nightlord on Day 3. The fight still follows the same attack patterns — the reduction in HP means phases end faster, not that patterns are skipped.
- Rune acquisition bonus: Solo mode grants approximately 60% more runes from all sources throughout the expedition. This accelerates levelling by roughly one to two additional Site of Grace upgrades per day compared to a trio, partly compensating for the lack of coordination.
- Night's Tide: The shrinking boundary that forces movement and limits the exploration area progresses at the same rate regardless of player count. Manage time as carefully solo as you would in a trio.
- Wending Grace: A solo-exclusive item purchasable from a field merchant on Day 2. It allows a single self-resurrection upon death. See the section below for details.
What does not change in solo mode: attack patterns, boss phase thresholds, the three-day structure, relic drops from field bosses, and Nightlord reward quality. Solo expeditions grant the same progression as trio runs.
03The Wending Grace: Your Solo Safety Net
Wending Grace is the most important purchased item in a solo run. It is exclusive to single-player expeditions and provides a single automatic self-resurrection when you take fatal damage during a Night Boss or Night Lord fight — it does not activate against regular field enemies or field bosses outside the designated Night Boss arenas.
Note: since Patch 1.01.1, solo players also receive a free 'Automatic Revival Upon Death' effect at the start of every expedition. This free revival is used first if both are available — Wending Grace only activates when no other revival is pending. Treating both as your double safety net for Nightlord fights is the correct framing.
- How to get it: Wending Grace costs 10,000 Runes and is available from generic merchants throughout the expedition in solo mode — including Nomadic Specter Merchants, the Township Merchant, and the Spirit Shelter Merchant. Buy it from the first merchant you find rather than waiting.
- When to buy it: Buy it as early as possible — Day 1 if a merchant appears. Having Wending Grace before attempting any Night Boss or the Day 3 Nightlord maximises your safety margin.
- How it works: Upon taking a fatal hit during a Night Boss or Nightlord fight while Wending Grace is in your inventory, you are automatically resurrected at 50% HP with a regeneration buff that restores a further 50% HP over time. The item is consumed on use — you get one resurrection per Wending Grace. It does not reset between days.
- Priority: Purchasing Wending Grace takes priority over any other merchant purchase. If you find a merchant but cannot afford it yet, clear the nearest enemy group for runes before buying.
In trio play, teammates can revive downed players. Wending Grace is the purchased equivalent of that mechanic — combined with the free auto-revival from Patch 1.01.1, solo Nightlord fights allow up to two deaths before the run ends.
04Best Nightfarers for Solo Play
Not all Nightfarers are equally effective alone. The solo tier list from strongest to most situational:
- Executor (Best solo overall): The highest single-target damage ceiling in the game via the parry-into-Cursed-Sword loop. Patch 1.03.2 improved Executor significantly — Cursed Sword now provides Guard Boost and better critical damage. No team utility penalty in solo. Requires parry timing comfort.
- Ironeye (Best for beginners going solo): Safe ranged damage keeps Ironeye at distance from Nightlord attacks. Single Shot provides high stagger on demand. Eagle Eye item drop bonus improves relic and weapon quality throughout the run. Marking works on solo targets too.
- Wylder (Most forgiving): Sixth Sense (death-cheat passive) resets at each Site of Grace, meaning you effectively have three free mistakes per expedition in addition to Wending Grace. For players still learning Nightlord patterns, Wylder is the best way to extend time in the fight and observe attacks.
- Duchess (High ceiling solo): Jump-attack bleed build with Restage duplication of your own highest hits works well solo. Requires more game knowledge than Ironeye or Wylder.
- Raider (Functional solo): Simple colossal weapon loop deals damage without requiring precise timing. Slower kill times than the top three but reliable.
- Recluse (Solo healer): Self-healing via Soulblood Song adds survivability solo, but the elemental cycling demands split attention. Functional, not recommended as a first solo pick.
- Guardian and Revenant (Avoid for solo): Both characters' strongest abilities — revival ultimates — provide no value when playing alone. Their personal damage is also lower than the top options.
05Day-by-Day Solo Strategy
Day 1: Setup
Day 1 is about building your foundation. The Night's Tide is not yet a major threat and enemies are manageable. Priorities:
- Find a primary weapon that matches your Nightfarer's scaling as quickly as possible. The first weapon you find is rarely your final weapon — pick it up and keep looking until you find something appropriate.
- Hit every Site of Grace you pass. Levels compound; skipping a grace to chase a boss is almost never worth it on Day 1.
- Look for the Day 1 mini-boss or field raid — completing it provides a relic reward and runes. Do not skip it.
- Route towards the end of the day efficiently. When the Night's Tide circle tightens, move with it rather than sprinting at the last second.
Day 2: Consolidate and Find Wending Grace
Day 2 introduces stronger enemies and more dangerous field raids. The priority order:
- Find the merchant selling Wending Grace before engaging the Day 2 boss. Explore the accessible map systematically.
- Continue levelling at Sites of Grace.
- Upgrade your primary weapon if a smithing stone and smithing merchant are available.
- Choose Day 2 boss fights you recognise. Against unknown bosses, observe two or three attack cycles before committing to aggressive play.
- Collect runes from groups of regular enemies when efficient — the 60% solo rune bonus means even clearing a patrol significantly closes the level gap before Day 3.
Day 3: The Nightlord Fight
Day 3 leads directly to the Nightlord. Preparation steps before the boss gate:
- Use any remaining Sacred Flasks at the final Site of Grace to heal fully.
- Confirm your relic setup is appropriate for the specific Nightlord (check weaknesses listed in the Nightlord boss guide).
- For the fight itself: study the Nightlord's first three attacks before committing to offense. Solo Nightlords have reduced HP but follow the same patterns as trio fights. Phase transitions occur at the same HP thresholds.
- Use Wending Grace insurance wisely — if it is consumed early in the fight, play more defensively for the remainder.
06Common Solo Mistakes
- Skipping Wending Grace: The most common failure mode for solo players. No other item or relic compensates for a missing self-resurrection against Nightlords with multi-hit phase two patterns.
- Rushing Day 1 bosses before reaching an adequate weapon: In solo, you lack teammates to pick up aggression when you are repositioning. If your weapon's damage is too low, fights drag on long enough for the Night's Tide to close in or for you to exhaust flasks.
- Choosing Guardian or Revenant for first solo run: Revival utility is wasted alone. Start with Wylder or Ironeye instead.
- Not tracking the Night's Tide circle: The shrinking boundary is the same speed in solo as trio but you have no teammates to warn you. Keep the map open in the corner of your vision on Day 1 and Day 2 to avoid being caught outside the circle.
- Spending all runes on merchant items before reaching Sites of Grace: Losing runes to a death before a Site of Grace wastes a level. Always bank a level before spending runes on consumables.
FAQ
Is Elden Ring Nightreign good solo?
Yes, with adjustments. The solo mode scales enemy HP to roughly one-third of trio values and grants a 60% rune acquisition bonus, making the game meaningfully easier to tackle alone while preserving the full expedition structure. Solo play is particularly rewarding for players who want to learn Nightlord patterns without the pressure of keeping up with teammates. It is harder than trio on the mechanical level — there is no one to revive you, no aggression-splitting, and no teammate healing — but the HP reduction compensates substantially.
What is Wending Grace in Elden Ring Nightreign?
Wending Grace is a solo-exclusive item (costs 10,000 Runes) available from generic merchants throughout a solo expedition — including Nomadic Specter Merchants, the Township Merchant, and the Spirit Shelter Merchant. It provides a single automatic self-resurrection at 50% HP (plus a regen buff for another 50% HP) when you take fatal damage during a Night Boss or Night Lord fight. It does not activate against regular field enemies. It is consumed on use and does not reset between days. Additionally, since Patch 1.01.1 solo players receive a separate free 'Automatic Revival Upon Death' effect at expedition start — the free revival is used first; Wending Grace acts as a second safety net.
What is the best Nightfarer for solo in Elden Ring Nightreign?
Executor is the strongest overall solo Nightfarer for experienced players, with the highest single-target damage ceiling via the parry-and-Cursed-Sword loop improved by Patch 1.03.2. For beginners, Ironeye provides safe ranged damage and Wylder provides the death-cheat Sixth Sense passive — both are significantly more forgiving than Executor and equally capable of completing solo expeditions once you know the Nightlord patterns.
How does enemy HP scale in Elden Ring Nightreign solo mode?
In solo mode, all enemies and bosses have their HP reduced to approximately one-third of their trio-mode values. In duo mode (two-player expeditions), HP is roughly halved compared to trio. The HP reduction applies to field enemies, field bosses during Days 1 and 2, and the final Nightlord on Day 3. Attack patterns and phase thresholds do not change — fights end faster because HP is lower, not because the Nightlord skips attacks.
Can you get all Nightlord rewards in solo mode?
Yes. Solo expeditions grant the same Nightlord relic drops and rewards as trio expeditions. Completing expeditions solo does not reduce reward quality. The solo and trio modes are progression-equivalent, so players who prefer solo can build a full relic collection without playing cooperatively.
When does duo mode become available in Elden Ring Nightreign?
Duo mode (two-player expeditions) was introduced in Patch 1.02 and has been available since then. It is accessible through the same Matchmaking Settings screen where you select Single Player mode — change the Expedition Type to Duo. Duo mode uses intermediate HP scaling (roughly half of trio HP) and is a useful bridge between solo difficulty and full three-player coordination.
