WoW Forever Name Reservation & Rulesets — What to Decide Before Launch
Before WoW: Forever launches on November 4, 2026, you get one week to grab the names you want. Here is who qualifies, how the two-part name system works, and the October 27 – November 3 reservation window, based on Blizzard's own forum post and the outlets that cover it — plus a short primer on picking a ruleset, with the full comparison in our rulesets guide.
Early name reservation for WoW: Forever runs October 27 – November 3, 2026 (first come, first served) for owners of a paid Forever pack — Skyborne Heroic ($29.99), Skyborne Epic ($59.99) or the Warcraft Forever Collection ($79.99) — and launch follows on November 4. Characters have two names (first + last), and only the full combination has to be unique in your region, across every ruleset. Instead of a realm, you pick Normal, PvP or Roleplaying at launch, with Hardcore coming later; see our rulesets guide for the full breakdown.
01The Short Version
- Window: October 27 – November 3, 2026 (Pacific time), first come, first served. Launch follows on November 4 at 3:00 p.m. PST.
- Who qualifies: owners of a paid Forever upgrade pack — Skyborne Heroic ($29.99), Skyborne Epic ($59.99) or the Warcraft Forever Collection ($79.99). A subscription or Game Time alone does not include early reservation.
- How many: widely reported as up to 3 characters per account. Blizzard's own forum post doesn't state an exact number, but several outlets agree on 3.
- Names: first name + last name, both required. Only the full combination must be unique in your region — and that holds across every ruleset, not just within one.
- Rulesets: Normal, PvP and Roleplaying at launch; Hardcore comes after launch. You choose a ruleset instead of a realm — see our rulesets guide for how each one works.
02Who Can Reserve Names Early
Early reservation is a perk of buying one of the paid Forever upgrade packs, not of playing the base game. The three packs Blizzard and reviewers list are the Skyborne Heroic Pack, the Skyborne Epic Pack and the Warcraft Forever Collection. If you only have a subscription or Game Time, you can still create characters at launch, but you compete for names then, with everyone else.
Reservation and beta access are separate perks. According to Gfinity's breakdown of the editions, the $29.99 Heroic Pack includes early name reservation but not guaranteed beta access, while the $59.99 Epic Pack adds guaranteed beta access and 30 days of game time, and the $79.99 Forever Collection adds Warcraft III: Reforged on top of that. Reserved characters start at level 1 on launch day — reserving or testing gives no head start.
One point where guides disagree: Warcraft Tavern's naming-guidelines article says a pre-purchase lets you reserve one name, while other outlets, citing Blizzard, say up to 3 characters per account. Treat 3 as the working number, but expect the in-game screen to be the final word. Blizzard had also not published the exact opening hour on October 27 as of this writing.
03How the Two-Name System Works
Forever is realmless, so a single name can't be unique per realm any more. Every character instead has a first name and a last name, and Blizzard's forum post says only the full combination has to be unique across your region. Two players can both be “Aldric” as long as their last names differ.
Both fields are mandatory. The second name can be hidden on nameplates through the Options menu, but it still shows up in chat, so pick something you are happy to see in every conversation.
Naming rules to plan around
- Names must follow the WoW Code of Conduct: no banned words, impersonation of Blizzard staff, or confusing look-alike patterns.
- The filter checks both names together, so splitting a blocked word between first and last name is not a workaround.
- Warcraft Tavern reports that Blizzard has been removing beta access from players who tried to slip past the filter — do not test it with a reserved slot.
- If your combination is taken or rejected, you pick another one or use the random-name generator.
One name pool for every ruleset
Names are region-wide, not per ruleset. In a September 17 developer Q&A reported by Warcraft Tavern, Blizzard confirmed the first+last combination is unique across the entire region — so a name taken on Roleplaying is unavailable on PvP too, and you cannot claim the same name on multiple rulesets to test them. The one documented exception is a character transfer (for example, a Hardcore character moving to another ruleset after death): it keeps its existing name.
04Rulesets, in Brief
Forever has no realm list: before you create a character you pick a ruleset — Normal, PvP or Roleplaying at launch, with Hardcore added later — and everyone on that ruleset in your region shares one world and economy. You cannot switch an existing character to another ruleset, and dungeon and raid groups stay inside one ruleset, so settle this with any friends before you lock in names.
For the full picture — grouping rules, PvP's single-faction restriction, why you can't switch, and how Legacy points and Collections carry over — see our WoW Forever realms & rulesets guide.
- Play with friends or a guild: match whatever ruleset they picked — because raids are per ruleset, this matters more than any other factor.
- Want the widest population and least friction: Normal is the default choice for most players.
- Want open-world PvP: choose PvP, which locks you to one faction on that ruleset.
- Want a story-driven community: Roleplaying.
- Want permadeath: wait for Hardcore after launch rather than starting Normal and hoping to convert.
05How to Prepare Your Names
- Decide your ruleset and region first — names are region-wide, so this fixes your name pool.
- Pick class and race before you lock in names. Check the race-class combinations and the Skyborne race guide so you reserve slots for characters you will actually play.
- Write a shortlist of full first + last combinations, plus two fallbacks for each — the best names go fast on day one of the window.
- Keep both names clean: no look-alike characters, no repeated-letter tricks, nothing that resembles staff.
- Reserve as soon as the window opens on October 27; unreserved names are open to everyone at launch.
FAQ
When does WoW Forever name reservation start and end?
Early name reservation runs from October 27 to November 3, 2026 (Pacific time), on a first-come, first-served basis. The game launches the next day, November 4, 2026, at 3:00 p.m. PST.
Who can reserve character names in WoW Forever?
Players who have bought one of the paid Forever upgrade packs: Skyborne Heroic ($29.99), Skyborne Epic ($59.99) or the Warcraft Forever Collection ($79.99). A subscription or Game Time alone does not include early name reservation.
How many characters can I reserve?
Multiple outlets, including Blizzard Watch, report up to 3 characters per account. Blizzard's own forum post about the reservation window doesn't state an exact number, so confirm on the reservation screen if you're relying on it.
How do WoW Forever character names work?
Each character has a first name and a last name, both required. Only the full combination must be unique within your region, so players can share a first name or a last name. The last name can be hidden on nameplates but still appears in chat.
Can I use the same name on different rulesets?
No. Blizzard confirmed in a September 17 developer Q&A that the full name combination is unique across the entire region, covering every ruleset — a name used on one ruleset is unavailable on the others.
What rulesets are in WoW Forever?
Normal, PvP and Roleplaying at launch, with Hardcore added after launch. You pick a ruleset instead of a realm, and everyone on that ruleset in your region shares one world. See our rulesets guide for how grouping and factions work on each one.
Can I group with players on another ruleset?
Not for dungeons and raids — those are same-ruleset only. Battlegrounds may mix rulesets, except Hardcore, and Alliance and Horde never group together.
Do I get a head start if I reserve a name?
No. Reserved characters start at level 1 when the game launches on November 4; nothing carries over from reservation or the beta.
