Terraria Summoner Build Guide: All Stages

Updated September 20269 min readBy

The summoner is Terraria's most unique class: low defense, no mana cost for minions, and a playstyle built around whip management and minion stacking. Master tag damage, pick the right armor at each stage, and a full minion army will carry you from the first slime to Moon Lord.

01How the Summoner Class Works

Summoners deal most of their damage through minions — autonomous AI companions that attack automatically. Summoning staves cost no mana, so every minion slot can be refilled immediately after death at no cost. The trade-off is very low defense: a pure summoner must dodge, not tank.

Whips are the summoner's active weapon. They cost no mana or ammo and serve two functions: dealing direct tag damage and redirecting minions. Every whip applies a summon tag for four seconds — while active, each minion hit on that enemy adds the whip's tag damage. Whip stacking is back as of update 1.4.5.7, though it now runs through accessories rather than being automatic: you start with a single active tag slot, and three accessories — Mobius Strip, Wicked Armlet, and Silver Bracer — each add one more, for up to four simultaneous tags on the same enemy. Tag damage from multiple active tags stacks additively; fill every slot and apply another tag, and whichever one was applied longest ago gets bumped to make room.

02Pre-Hardmode Progression

Start with the Leather Whip (30 Leather at a Work Bench), then craft the Snapthorn in the Jungle for its tag damage and speed buff. For minions, pursue this order:

  1. Finch Staff — crafted from Wood / found in Living Wood Chests. A free first minion.
  2. Hornet Staff — crafted from Stingers and Bottled Honey. Reliable, obtainable before any boss.
  3. Imp Staff — crafted from Hellstone Bars. A big damage jump and your last pre-Hardmode minion upgrade.
  4. Bee Armor — from Bee Wax (Queen Bee). Gives +2 minion slots and a strong summon-damage bonus. Queen Bee is the priority boss for any summoner.

Use the Bewitching Table (Dungeons) for +1 minion before boss fights, and a Summoning Potion for another +1. With Bee Armor, Bewitching Table, and Summoning Potion you can reach 5 minions to shred the Wall of Flesh.

03Early Hardmode: Spider Armor and Mechanical Bosses

The most important early-Hardmode step is farming Spider Caves in the Underground Jungle for Spider Fangs. Craft Spider Armor (+3 minion slots and a big summon-damage bonus — the best summoner armor until post-Plantera) and pair it with the Spider Staff, whose Wall Creeper minions stick to surfaces.

Pre-fight routine: summon all minions, activate the Bewitching Table buff, drink a Summoning Potion, then engage.

04Mid-Hardmode: Plantera to Golem

After Plantera, two accessories unlock. The Necromantic Scroll (Mourning Wood, Pumpkin Moon) gives +1 slot and +10% summon damage; the Papyrus Scarab combines it with a Hercules Beetle for +1 slot and +15% damage. Equipping the Pygmy Necklace, Necromantic Scroll, and Papyrus Scarab adds +3 slots plus substantial damage.

The Terraprisma (from the daytime Empress of Light) is an optional but powerful detour — a high-DPS sentinel that does not count against the minion cap.

05Endgame: Stardust Armor and Moon Lord

Stardust Armor (Luminite Bars + Stardust Fragments at an Ancient Manipulator) is the definitive endgame set: +5 minion slots, a big summon-damage bonus, and the passive Stardust Guardian sentry that does not consume a slot. With all the capacity accessories plus buffs, a fully geared summoner can field up to 11 minions.

For Moon Lord: fill all slots with Stardust Dragon, use the Kaleidoscope (highest pre-Moon-Lord tag damage) to keep a tag active, and use a Flask of Ichor to reduce his defense. Accessories: Papyrus Scarab, Necromantic Scroll, Pygmy Necklace, Celestial Shell, Ankh Shield, and Wings. If you'd rather run two whips than max out minion slots, swapping in Mobius Strip or Wicked Armlet lets you keep a second tag active — a real tradeoff against the Moon Lord's high enemy count, since every accessory slot spent on tag stacking is one not spent on capacity or survivability.

06Quick-Reference Progression Checklist

Confirm readiness at each stage:

  1. Early Pre-HM: Leather Whip + Finch or Hornet Staff, Jungle accessible.
  2. Pre-Bosses: Snapthorn + Imp Staff, Bewitching Table located.
  3. Post-Queen Bee: Bee Armor, Pygmy Necklace, Summoning Potions stocked.
  4. Hardmode entry: Spider Armor + Spider Staff before touching evil-biome altars.
  5. Post-Plantera: Spooky or Tiki Armor, Necromantic Scroll + Papyrus Scarab equipped.
  6. Post-Cultist: Stardust Armor, both Stardust staves, Kaleidoscope.
  7. Moon Lord: Flask of Ichor active, all buffs applied.

FAQ

What is the best summoner armor in Terraria?

Stardust Armor is the definitive best-in-slot summoner armor, granting +5 minion slots, a large summon-damage bonus, and the free Stardust Guardian sentry. Before Stardust, Spooky Armor (post-Plantera, Pumpkin Moon) offers the highest summon-damage multiplier. Spider Armor is the best choice for early Hardmode before Plantera.

Does whip stacking still work in Terraria?

Yes, as of update 1.4.5.7 — though it now works through accessories instead of happening automatically. You start with one active whip-tag slot, and equipping Mobius Strip, Wicked Armlet, and Silver Bracer each adds another, for up to four simultaneous tags on the same enemy. Tag damage from every active whip stacks additively, and if you exceed your slot count, the oldest applied tag is dropped to make room for the newest one.

How do you increase minion count in Terraria?

Minion count is raised by summoner armor (Spider +3, Tiki +4, Stardust +5) and three accessories: Pygmy Necklace, Necromantic Scroll, and Papyrus Scarab. The Bewitching Table buff and a Summoning Potion each add +1 temporarily. At maximum, a fully geared summoner can maintain around 11 simultaneous minions.

Is Stardust Dragon or Stardust Cell better for Moon Lord?

Stardust Dragon is generally better for Moon Lord because each summon extends the dragon and every segment attacks independently, concentrating enormous single-target DPS. Stardust Cells spread damage across multiple targets, making them superior during events. For Moon Lord, fill all slots with Dragon segments and use whips to keep it focused.
