Sims 4: Vampires & Werewolves Guide
Vampires and werewolves are two of the most popular occult life states in The Sims 4, but each requires a separate paid DLC: the Vampires Game Pack for vampires and the Werewolves Game Pack for werewolves. Without the relevant pack your Sim cannot become that creature. If you own both, you can even experiment with switching between them. This guide covers how to turn, every rank and power tier, weaknesses and fury management, and how to cure your Sim and go back to being human.
01DLC Requirements: What You Need First
Before anything else, check which packs you own. Neither occult type is available in the free base game:
- Vampires Game Pack — adds vampires, Forgotten Hollow neighbourhood, plasma fruit, vampire lore skill, and all vampire powers and weaknesses.
- Werewolves Game Pack — adds werewolves, Moonwood Mill neighbourhood, the Fury system, temperaments, and the two rival packs (Wildfangs and Moonwood Collective).
- The packs are independent — owning one does not give you the other.
- Both packs are typically available in EA's sale cycles. Check your EA app library before buying.
Once you own the relevant pack, every mechanic below is available in any existing save or a brand-new game.
02How to Become a Vampire
There are three ways to turn a Sim into a vampire:
- Create-a-Sim: When creating a new household, choose the Occult Sim option and select Vampire. Your Sim starts as a fully-fledged Fledgling with a blank powers slate.
- Ask a vampire to turn you: Build a friendship with an existing vampire Sim, then ask them to Turn Me (the interaction appears in the vampire's social menu). The turning process takes about 36 in-game hours — your Sim feels ill and then wakes up as a Fledgling Vampire.
- Inheritance: If both parents are vampires (or even just one), children may inherit the vampire trait and transform automatically when they become a Teen.
New vampires start with no powers and a very low plasma hunger threshold — they feel weak quickly. Feed on other Sims or drink Plasma Juice to satisfy Thirst. You can grow a Plasma Fruit plant for a reliable food source without bothering neighbours.
03Vampire Ranks, Power Points & Powers
Vampires progress through five ranks by gaining Vampire XP — earned by feeding, practising vampire abilities, studying Vampire Lore, or duelling other vampires. Each rank unlocks new power slots and gives Power Points to spend:
- Fledgling Vampire — starting rank; early cheap powers cost 1–2 points.
- Minor Vampire — unlocks mid-tier powers (cost ~3 points).
- Prime Vampire — powers cost around 4 points; strength grows noticeably.
- Master Vampire — high-end powers at ~5 points; vampires become a real force in the neighbourhood.
- Grand Master Vampire — maximum rank; most powerful abilities available, powers cost up to 6 points.
At each new rank you must choose a weakness before you can spend any Power Points — there is no skipping weaknesses. Notable powers to prioritise:
- Bat Form — instant travel anywhere on the lot as a bat; great for quick feeding.
- Mist Form — teleport through doors and barriers as a cloud of mist.
- Mesmerise — mind-control a Sim to make them willing to be fed on.
- Supernatural Speed — dramatically increases movement speed.
- Child of the Moon — boosts energy and mood recovery during night hours.
- Create Vampire Spawn — turn another Sim into a vampire with a bite, unlocked at higher ranks.
Weaknesses are equally important because choosing the wrong ones will cripple your Sim's daily life. The most manageable options are Guilty Drinker (sadness moodlet after feeding) and Uncontrollable Hissing (occasional social awkwardness). The harshest are Withered Stomach (regular food causes illness) and Thin-Skinned (amplified sunlight damage) — avoid stacking both.
04Vampire Weaknesses: Sun, Garlic & Willpower
Even a Grand Master Vampire has exploitable weaknesses. Understanding them keeps your Sim alive and functional:
- Sunlight: direct sun rapidly drains Energy and causes a burning moodlet — extended exposure can kill your Sim. Use Vampire Sun Resistance power tiers to reduce damage, or simply live nocturnally.
- Garlic: garlic items in a room create a repellent aura that lowers a vampire's mood and makes them uncomfortable. Keep garlic plants and garlic bread out of your home.
- Vampire Hunter NPCs and Stakes: vampire hunters can confront your Sim with a stake and may attempt to 'cure' them by force. Keep your Sim's relationship with humans high to reduce conflict.
- Willpower (chosen weakness): some weaknesses like Fitful Sleep or Waterlogged affect basic needs. Plan your weakness picks carefully — they shape the entire gameplay experience.
Tip: invest early in the Vampire Sun Resistance power chain (Minor level) to open up daytime gameplay without immediately roasting your Sim.
05How to Become a Werewolf
Lycanthropy has three entry points, all from the Werewolves Game Pack:
- Create-a-Sim: Select Occult → Werewolf. The Sim starts as a New Werewolf with no abilities yet.
- Bite from an existing werewolf: Once a werewolf Sim reaches higher ranks, they unlock the Cursed Bite ability. Ask them to use it on your Sim and the infection takes hold over the next few days.
- Contracting Werebies: Explore the underground tunnels in Moonwood Mill, or get into brawls with infected werewolves — there is a chance of accidentally catching the lycanthropy infection, which transforms slowly.
Children of werewolf parents may also inherit the trait and transform at Teen. Once transformed, a werewolf Sim has normal needs plus the Fury meter — the key mechanic unique to this life state.
06Werewolf Ranks, Fury & Wild Form
Werewolves advance through five ranks by earning Werewolf XP — gained from using abilities, brawling, howling, and exploring in werewolf form. Each rank unlocks new ability slots:
- Cursed Sim — the infection stage; abilities locked, transformation uncontrolled.
- New Werewolf — first true rank after the transformation sets; early cheap abilities.
- Experienced Werewolf — mid-tier abilities; Fury control improves.
- Prime Werewolf — strong abilities; can unlock pack leadership interactions.
- Apex Werewolf — maximum rank; most powerful abilities available, including the knowledge needed to brew the cure.
Fury is the defining mechanic: it rises over time and spikes from negative moods, unsatisfied needs, and full-moon phases. Each werewolf has 3–5 Temperaments — personality traits that add specific fury triggers (for example, disliking being around large groups, or hating water). When Fury maxes out, your Sim enters an uncontrolled Rampage: they destroy furniture, terrorise nearby Sims, and may bite them. During a rampage you lose direct control until Fury subsides.
Key abilities to manage Fury:
- Will to Resist — gives the werewolf a chance to breathe and instantly reduce Fury a little.
- Lunar Resistance — protects against full-moon forced transformations, the biggest source of rampages.
- Controlled Form — higher-rank ability to enter or exit werewolf form voluntarily, without waiting for the moon or a Fury trigger.
Packs offer social structure: Moonwood Collective (tradition-focused, led by Kristopher Volkov) and Wildfangs (freedom-focused, led by Rory Oaklow). Joining a pack gives access to unique interactions and aspirations; becoming Alpha is the ultimate werewolf goal.
Silver is a werewolf's significant weakness — silver-tipped items or attacks from NPCs aware of your nature will deal extra damage and spike Fury. Avoid conflict with hostile hunter characters when Fury is already elevated.
07How to Cure Vampirism or Lycanthropy
Both occult states are reversible if you change your mind:
- Cure for vampires — Ultimate Vampire Cure: Level the Vampire Lore skill to level 15 (buyable from the bookshelf). At level 15 your Sim learns to brew the Ultimate Vampire Cure potion using 10 garlic, 10 wolfsbane, and 10 plasma fruit. Drink it to permanently become human. Alternatively, use the cheat
traits.remove_trait trait_OccultVampirewithtestingcheats truefor an instant cure. - Cure for werewolves — Wolf-B-Gone: Reach Apex Werewolf rank and unlock the Lunar Epiphany dormant ability. This lets your Sim read Greg's enchanted diary (Diary of Greggorius Luvnik), which reveals the cure recipe: 10 Wolfsbane flowers + 3 Moonpetals. Gather these in Moonwood Mill, then brew and drink the Wolf-B-Gone potion.
- Both cures are permanent for that Sim — you can be turned again afterward if you choose.
- Cheat shortcut for werewolves:
traits.remove_trait trait_OccultWerewolf.
08Vampire vs Werewolf: Which Should You Pick?
Both life states offer very different playstyles. Here is a quick comparison to help you choose:
- Vampires suit players who enjoy stealth and manipulation — Mesmerise, Mist Form, and nocturnal life make for a quiet, powerful Sim. The main challenge is managing Thirst and sunlight.
- Werewolves suit players who enjoy social dynamics and pack politics — joining a pack, rising to Alpha, and managing the fury-rampage cycle creates dramatic stories. The main challenge is Fury and full-moon chaos.
- Complexity: Werewolves have more unpredictable moment-to-moment gameplay (Fury rampages, Temperaments). Vampires are more strategic — carefully picking powers and weaknesses matters a lot.
- Neighbourhood integration: Forgotten Hollow (Vampires) is a gothic residential world; Moonwood Mill (Werewolves) is a forested mill town with underground tunnels.
- Both at once? A Sim cannot be a vampire and a werewolf simultaneously — the two traits conflict. You must cure one before becoming the other.
FAQ
How do you become a vampire in Sims 4?
You need the Vampires Game Pack. Then either create a vampire Sim in CAS, befriend an existing vampire and ask them to Turn You (the interaction appears in their social menu), or be born of vampire parents and transform at Teen. The turning process takes about 36 in-game hours and the Sim wakes up as a Fledgling Vampire.
How do you become a werewolf in Sims 4?
You need the Werewolves Game Pack. Options are: choose Werewolf in Create-a-Sim, ask a high-rank werewolf to use Cursed Bite on your Sim, or contract Werebies by exploring Moonwood Mill's underground tunnels and getting into brawls with infected wolves. Children of werewolves may also inherit the trait.
How do you cure vampirism in Sims 4?
Level Vampire Lore skill to 15 (from the bookshelf) and your Sim learns to craft the Ultimate Vampire Cure using 10 garlic, 10 wolfsbane, and 10 plasma fruit. Drink the potion to permanently return to human. Alternatively use the cheat: testingcheats true, then traits.remove_trait trait_OccultVampire.
How do you control Fury as a werewolf in Sims 4?
Unlock the Will to Resist ability to release Fury in short bursts, and Lunar Resistance to avoid forced full-moon transformations. Keep needs satisfied and avoid Temperament triggers. During a full moon it is nearly impossible to avoid a rampage without Lunar Resistance unlocked — so prioritise that ability as you rank up.
Can a Sims 4 Sim be both a vampire and a werewolf?
No — the vampire and werewolf traits conflict and cannot be active on the same Sim at the same time. To switch, you must cure the current life state first (Ultimate Vampire Cure or Wolf-B-Gone potion), and then pursue the other occult path. You need both the Vampires Game Pack and the Werewolves Game Pack installed to do this.
