Sims 4: Grim Reaper Guide — Death & Resurrection

The Grim Reaper is one of The Sims 4's most iconic figures — equal parts dreaded and beloved. Whether you want to save a Sim from death, keep a ghost in the family, or bring a loved one back to life, this guide covers how dying works, how to plead with the Reaper, and every resurrection method in the game.

01Ways Sims Can Die

There are many causes of death, expanded by packs. The base-game and common ones include:

• Old age — Elders pass naturally at the end of their lifespan. Base game.
• Fire — cooking accidents, fireplaces, fireworks, or an overly dusty house. Base game.
• Starvation — a fully depleted hunger need. Base game.
• Drowning — a Sim stuck in a pool with the ladder removed, or too exhausted to climb out. Base game.
• Electrocution — getting shocked while repairing electronics with low Handiness. Base game.
• Emotional deaths — Enraged (Cardiac Explosion), Mortified (death by embarrassment), and Hysterical (death by laughter) are all base game; only Young Adult, Adult, and Elder Sims are at risk, and the trigger is stacked moodlet points, not a timer.
• Overexertion — Elder Sims can die from exhausting themselves through strenuous activity. Base game.
• Pack-specific deaths — packs add many more causes gated behind that pack: Seasons (overheating, freezing, lightning), Vampires (sunlight exposure for vampire Sims), Cottage Living (Killer Rabbit/Chicken), Jungle Adventure (poison), StrangerVille (consumed by the Mother), Realm of Magic (Spellcaster Overload), and several others. A death type from a pack you don't own simply can't happen in your save.

02Pleading With the Grim Reaper

When a Sim dies, the Grim Reaper arrives to collect them — and you get a small window to intervene:

• Plead with Grim: a nearby household Sim can beg for the dying Sim's life. Success is not guaranteed and depends on the pleading Sim's mood and relationship with the deceased.
• Offer the Death Flower: if the dying (or a nearby) Sim has a Death Flower in their inventory, you get the option to give it to Grim, which guarantees the Sim is spared.
• Befriend Grim: the Reaper can be talked to and even befriended; a good relationship may help pleading.
• If pleading fails, the Sim dies and becomes a ghost — but that is not necessarily the end (see resurrection below).

03The Death Flower & Ghosts

Two things worth knowing before and after a death:

• Death Flower: grown via Gardening (level 5+, base game) — graft a Cherry with an Apple to get a Pomegranate, graft a Snapdragon with a Lily to get an Orchid, then graft the Pomegranate with the Orchid for a chance at a Death Flower. Keep one in a Sim's inventory as life insurance.
• Ghosts: dead Sims become playable ghosts. You can add them to your household via Manage Households and keep them around — they have ghostly traits based on how they died.
• Ghost behaviour: ghosts can do most normal activities, age is frozen, and some can even have babies with living Sims depending on settings.
• Urns and tombstones: a Sim's urn or tombstone anchors their ghost — deleting it removes the ghost, so keep it safe if you want them back.

04How to Resurrect a Sim

Death is reversible in The Sims 4. The main resurrection methods are:

1. Ambrosia: the classic revival meal (base game). Cook it at Cooking level 10 and Gourmet Cooking level 10 from a Potion of Youth (1,500 Satisfaction Points in the reward store), an Angelfish (Fishing skill, found in Willow Creek's river), and a Death Flower, then have the ghost Sim eat it to return to life.
2. Book of Life: a Sim who maxes Writing (level 10) and completes the Bestselling Author aspiration gets the Poetic reward trait, the only trait that can write a Book of Life. Bind a living Sim to the book; if they later die, summon their ghost with the book, add the ghost to your household, then have the ghost read the book to be resurrected. Each book only works once.
3. Realm of Magic spell: a Spellcaster with the Dedeathify Untamed-branch spell (requires the Realm of Magic game pack) can bring a ghost back.
4. Wishing Well / pack methods: some packs add their own revival chances, though results can be unpredictable.

Ambrosia is the most reliable base-game route — just gather the three ingredients in advance, since the Angelfish and Potion of Youth take some effort. The Book of Life and Dedeathify are pack-gated: Book of Life needs enough playtime to max a skill and finish an aspiration (no pack required), while Dedeathify needs the Realm of Magic game pack.
