Sims 4: Grim Reaper Guide — Death & Resurrection
The Grim Reaper is one of The Sims 4's most iconic figures — equal parts dreaded and beloved. Whether you want to save a Sim from death, keep a ghost in the family, or bring a loved one back to life, this guide covers how dying works, how to plead with the Reaper, and every resurrection method in the game.
When a Sim dies in Sims 4, the Grim Reaper appears and nearby Sims can plead for their life — success depends on mood and relationship, but giving the Reaper a Death Flower guarantees a save. Dead Sims become ghosts you can keep in your household. To bring one back, feed them Ambrosia (cooked from a Potion of Youth, an Angelfish, and a Death Flower), use the Book of Life, or the Realm of Magic's resurrection spell. Death types range from old age to fire, drowning, and many pack-specific causes.
01Ways Sims Can Die
There are many causes of death, expanded by packs. The base-game and common ones include:
- Old age — Elders pass naturally at the end of their lifespan.
- Fire — cooking accidents and fireplaces; keep a smoke detector and fire extinguisher.
- Starvation — a fully depleted hunger need.
- Drowning — a Sim left in a pool with no ladder (or exhausted).
- Electrocution — repairing electronics with low Handiness.
- Overexertion, embarrassment, and extreme emotions (Mortified, Enraged, Hysterical) can also kill.
- Pack-specific deaths — many unusual causes exist, from temperature extremes to certain animals and hazards.
02Pleading With the Grim Reaper
When a Sim dies, the Grim Reaper arrives to collect them — and you get a small window to intervene:
- Plead with Grim: a nearby household Sim can beg for the dying Sim's life. Success is not guaranteed and depends on the pleading Sim's mood and relationship with the deceased.
- Offer the Death Flower: if the dying (or a nearby) Sim has a Death Flower in their inventory, you get the option to give it to Grim, which guarantees the Sim is spared.
- Befriend Grim: the Reaper can be talked to and even befriended; a good relationship may help pleading.
- If pleading fails, the Sim dies and becomes a ghost — but that is not necessarily the end (see resurrection below).
03The Death Flower & Ghosts
Two things worth knowing before and after a death:
- Death Flower: grown via Gardening — graft and cross plants (a common route is grafting toward the Death Flower from Pomegranate and Orchid) once your Gardening skill is high enough. Keep one in a Sim's inventory as life insurance.
- Ghosts: dead Sims become playable ghosts. You can add them to your household via Manage Households and keep them around — they have ghostly traits based on how they died.
- Ghost behaviour: ghosts can do most normal activities, age is frozen, and some can even have babies with living Sims depending on settings.
- Urns and tombstones: a Sim's urn or tombstone anchors their ghost — deleting it removes the ghost, so keep it safe if you want them back.
04How to Resurrect a Sim
Death is reversible in The Sims 4. The main resurrection methods are:
- Ambrosia: the classic revival meal. Cook it (it needs high Cooking and Gourmet Cooking) from a Potion of Youth, an Angelfish, and a Death Flower, then have the ghost Sim eat it to return to life.
- Book of Life: a Sim with maxed Writing skill and the Bestselling Author aspiration can write the Book of Life and bind a living Sim into it; if that Sim later dies, the book can resurrect them.
- Realm of Magic spell: a Spellcaster who has learned the resurrection spell (from the Realm of Magic pack) can bring a ghost back.
- Wishing Well / pack methods: some packs add their own revival chances, though results can be unpredictable.
Ambrosia is the most reliable route in the base-plus-common setup — just gather the three ingredients in advance, since the Angelfish and Potion of Youth take some effort.
FAQ
How do you save a Sim from the Grim Reaper in Sims 4?
When a Sim dies, a nearby household Sim can Plead with the Grim Reaper, though success depends on their mood and relationship with the deceased. The guaranteed method is to give the Reaper a Death Flower — if a Sim nearby has one in their inventory, you get the option to hand it over, which always spares the dying Sim. Keep a Death Flower on hand as life insurance.
How do you resurrect a Sim in Sims 4?
The most reliable method is Ambrosia, a meal cooked from a Potion of Youth, an Angelfish, and a Death Flower (it needs high Cooking and Gourmet Cooking) — have the ghost eat it to return to life. You can also use the Book of Life, written by a Sim with maxed Writing and the Bestselling Author aspiration, or the resurrection spell from the Realm of Magic pack.
How do you get a Death Flower in Sims 4?
Death Flowers come from the Gardening skill. Level up Gardening, then graft and cross-breed plants toward the Death Flower — a common route works up from plants like Pomegranate and Orchid. Keep a Death Flower in a Sim's inventory and you can give it to the Grim Reaper to guarantee they spare a dying Sim, and it is also an ingredient in Ambrosia.
Can you keep a ghost in your household in Sims 4?
Yes. When a Sim dies they become a playable ghost, and you can add them to your household through Manage Households. Ghosts can do most normal activities, their age is frozen, and depending on settings some can even have children with living Sims. Their urn or tombstone anchors them, so keep it safe — deleting it removes the ghost permanently.
