Sims 4: Traits & Aspirations Guide
Traits and aspirations are what give a Sim personality and direction. The right combination shapes how your Sim feels, what they are good at, and which permanent bonuses they earn. This guide explains how trait slots and aspirations work together, highlights the most useful picks, and covers the cheats to change them later.
Adult Sims get three personality traits plus one bonus trait from their chosen aspiration, all set in Create-A-Sim and affecting moods, interactions, and skill gain. Aspirations are long-term goals with four milestones; completing the whole aspiration grants a permanent reward trait. You can change aspirations any time and buy extra reward traits with satisfaction points. To edit traits after creation, use testingcheats true then cas.fulleditmode and Modify in CAS.
01How Trait Slots Work
Traits are chosen in Create-A-Sim and define a Sim's personality. The number of slots depends on age:
- Young Adults and older get 3 personality trait slots, plus a bonus trait from their aspiration (so effectively four).
- Teens get 3, children get 1, and toddlers get 1 toddler trait.
- Traits affect moods (e.g. Cheerful Sims get Happy more easily), autonomous behaviour, and some affect skill gain rates.
- Sims can also gain extra traits over time from gameplay — reward traits, lifestyle traits (from packs), and quirks.
02How Aspirations Work
An aspiration is a long-term goal made of four progressive milestones:
- Pick an aspiration in Create-A-Sim (it grants a bonus trait immediately).
- Work through its four milestones — each is a set of objectives.
- Each completed milestone awards satisfaction points (the reward-store currency).
- Finishing the entire aspiration grants a permanent reward trait tied to that aspiration.
You can switch aspirations at any time from the aspiration panel (press the aspiration tab), and progress on each is saved separately — so you can chase several over a Sim's life.
03Best Traits & Reward Traits
Some traits and reward traits are far more useful than others. Strong picks include:
- Personality: Cheerful (easy Happy moodlets), Creative or Genius (faster relevant skill gain), Active (easy Energised), and Ambitious (boosted job performance).
- Reward traits from the store: Fertile (more twins/triplets), Hardly Hungry (eat less often), Steel Bladder, Free Services, and Connections (start careers higher).
- Aspiration reward traits: e.g. Domestic Whiz bonuses, Hilarious, or Master Mixer, depending on the aspiration you complete.
- Long Lived extends a Sim's lifespan — popular for legacy characters.
Reward traits bought with satisfaction points stack with your CAS-chosen traits, so a well-played Sim ends up with several powerful bonuses.
04Traits & Aspiration Cheats
To change traits or speed through aspirations, open the console (Ctrl+Shift+C) and enter testingcheats true first:
- Edit traits:
cas.fulleditmode, then Shift+Click the Sim → Modify in CAS to change personality traits and aspiration. - Add satisfaction points:
sims.give_satisfaction_points [number]— buy reward traits without grinding. - Complete a milestone:
aspirations.complete_current_milestoneadvances the current aspiration step instantly. - Add a trait directly:
traits.equip_trait [TraitName]and remove withtraits.remove_trait [TraitName].
FAQ
How many traits can a Sim have in Sims 4?
Young adults and older get three personality traits chosen in Create-A-Sim, plus one bonus trait from their aspiration — effectively four. Teens get three, while children and toddlers get one. On top of these, Sims can earn extra reward traits from the satisfaction-point store and aspiration completions, and lifestyle traits from certain packs, so a developed Sim ends up with several.
How do aspirations work in Sims 4?
An aspiration is a long-term goal made of four milestones, each a set of objectives. Choosing one in CAS grants an immediate bonus trait, completing each milestone awards satisfaction points, and finishing the whole aspiration grants a permanent reward trait. You can switch aspirations at any time from the aspiration panel, and progress on each one is saved separately.
How do you change a Sim's traits after creation?
Open the console with Ctrl+Shift+C, type testingcheats true, then cas.fulleditmode. Shift+Click the Sim and choose Modify in CAS, where you can change personality traits and the aspiration freely. Alternatively, use traits.equip_trait [TraitName] and traits.remove_trait [TraitName] in the console to add or remove individual traits without entering CAS.
What are the best reward traits in Sims 4?
Strong satisfaction-point reward traits include Fertile (more twins and triplets), Hardly Hungry (eat less often), Connections (start careers at a higher level), Free Services, and Steel Bladder. Long Lived extends a Sim's lifespan for legacy play. You buy these with satisfaction points earned from completing aspiration milestones, and they stack with your chosen personality traits.
