Sims 4: How to Have a Baby (Pregnancy Guide)

Starting a family is one of the most popular things to do in The Sims 4 — and there are more ways to do it than the obvious one. This guide covers Try for Baby, adoption, the Science Baby route, how pregnancy works day by day, how to aim for twins, and the cheats that speed the whole thing up.

01The Ways to Have a Baby

There are three main routes to a new family member, and a fourth if you count the science route separately:

• Try for Baby: the classic option between two Sims with a high enough romance bar — performed on a bed (or other WooHoo spots).
• Adopt: any household can adopt a child via the phone or computer ('Hire a Service' / 'Household' → Adopt), no partner required. Great for single-parent or same-sex households without using the science option.
• Science Baby: a solo or paired Sim can try for a baby through the computer or phone for about §1,200 — ideal when you want a biological child without a romantic partner.
• Male pregnancy: any Sim can be set to become pregnant in Create-A-Sim under the gender customisation options, so male Sims can carry babies too.

02Try for Baby: Step by Step

The standard method needs a little romance groundwork first:

1. Build the two Sims' romance bar to roughly 40% or higher using flirty interactions — the higher it is, the more reliable Try for Baby becomes.
2. Click a bed (a double bed, or other WooHoo-enabled objects like certain bushes or the rocket ship).
3. Select Try for Baby with the partner Sim.
4. A jingle and a notification confirm success. A pregnant Sim gets a moodlet and a visible bump appears around the second day.
5. If it does not take, simply Try for Baby again — there is a strong but not guaranteed chance each attempt.

03How Pregnancy Works (Day by Day)

Pregnancy in The Sims 4 runs about three Sim days on the normal lifespan, roughly one trimester per day:

• Day 1: the pregnancy is confirmed; early moodlets including occasional morning sickness (an Uncomfortable moodlet) appear.
• Day 2: the baby bump becomes visible and the Sim swaps to maternity outfits automatically.
• Day 3: the final trimester; the Sim is ready to give birth and you will get the option to have the baby.
• Giving birth: you can choose to give birth at home (free, instant) or travel to a hospital for a longer event. Both result in the same baby.

Keep the pregnant Sim well-fed and rested — a good mood reduces uncomfortable moodlets and makes the three days smoother.

04Twins, Triplets & Influencing the Baby

If you want more than one baby at a time, a couple of mechanics raise your odds:

• Fertile reward trait: buy it from the aspiration reward store (3,000 satisfaction points) — it increases the chance of twins and triplets and shortens pregnancy slightly.
• Fertility Massage: available through the Spa Day pack, it temporarily boosts the chance of multiples.
• On the Fertile Grounds / lifestyle effects from various packs can also nudge the odds.
• Some players report that diet and music influence the baby's traits or gender, but these effects are minor and have changed across patches — do not rely on them.

05Pregnancy Cheats

If you would rather skip the waiting, cheats handle it. Open the console (Ctrl+Shift+C) and enter testingcheats true first, then Shift+Click the pregnant Sim for options like 'Pregnancy' → make the Sim progress to the next trimester or give birth immediately.

• Shift+Click the pregnant Sim → Pregnancy menu to jump trimesters or trigger labour.
• Use sims.add_buff pregnancy buffs as an alternative method to start or advance a pregnancy.
• To get a baby without any pregnancy at all, use the adopt option from the phone — instant and partner-free.
