Grounded 2 Base Building Guide — Shelter, Materials, and Best Locations

Building a base in Grounded 2 is more involved than placing a simple campsite — it requires unlocked recipes, specific materials, and smart placement to survive bug raids and the environment. Your shelter is also your crafting hub, storage depot, and safe respawn anchor, so getting the first one right saves dozens of frustrating material runs later. This guide covers everything from your first Lean-To to a proper multi-room shelter, including where to build it and how to haul the materials efficiently.

01Before You Build — Unlocking Building Recipes

Unlike the original Grounded, most construction recipes in Grounded 2 are not available by default. You unlock them in two ways: by scanning raw materials at Field Stations (which auto-unlocks the basic recipe for items made from that material) or by purchasing advanced blueprints from the Science Shop inside the Ranger Station, using Raw Science.

The Ranger Station is the first major outpost in Brookhollow Park — it's worth reaching early because it unlocks a significant batch of building and crafting options at once. Bring Raw Science (earned from scanning at Field Stations) to spend in the Science Shop.

• Scan Grass Planks, Weed Stems, and Sprig bundles at a Field Station to auto-unlock their basic building recipes.
• Visit the Ranger Station Science Shop for floor tiles, windowed walls, roofing types, and defensive structures.
• Raw Science resets between Field Station visits but stacks — don't rush to spend it, save for the upgrades you actually need.
• Some premium building sets (Mushroom Brick, Sturdy Stem) require scanning their base material first, then purchasing the full set from the Science Shop.

02First Shelter — The Lean-To and Minimal Base

Your very first structure should be a Lean-To — a simple one-piece shelter built from Sprigs and Plant Fiber that sets a respawn point. It's not a full base, but it costs almost nothing and prevents losing progress to a distant respawn if you die.

Once you have a Workbench, upgrade to a proper minimal base. The fastest functional first base requires only a few resources and gives you storage, a crafting station, and protection:

• Grass Floor tiles × 4–6 — the foundation. Lay them in a 2×3 grid for a small but usable footprint.
• Grass Wall tiles — surround the floor perimeter; one doorway gap is enough for entry.
• Grass Roof tiles — use the same count as your floor; the roof keeps rain debuffs away.
• Workbench inside — essential for crafting gear and tools without running back to a Field Station.
• Storage Chest × 2 — one for building materials, one for food and equipment.
• Dew Collector outside — passive water supply while you sleep or explore.

This minimal base can be built in under 20 minutes of resource gathering. Don't worry about aesthetics yet — get the functional core down first, then expand.

03Building Materials — Tiers and What to Gather

Grounded 2 uses a tiered material system for base construction. Early materials are abundant but weak; mid-game materials offer better durability and more building options.

Tier 1 — Grass and Weed:

• Grass Plank — chop tall grass stems with Omni-Tool; the core early building material for floors, walls, and roofs.
• Weed Stem — chop dandelions or large weed stalks; stronger than Grass Plank, used for sturdier walls and reinforcement.
• Plant Fiber — harvested alongside grass; used as a binding material in most early recipes.
• Sprig — small stalks from low plants; cheap structural component for Lean-Tos and basic furniture.

Tier 2 — Acorn and Mushroom:

• Acorn Top / Acorn Shell — break open acorns with a Tier 2 Omni-Tool; used for flooring with higher durability.
• Mushroom Brick — crafted from Mushroom Chunks at a Workbench; the first proper upgrade to exterior walls (resists bug attacks better than Grass Plank).
• Sturdy Stem — reinforced Weed Stem (requires crafting); essential for vertical structures and second-floor supports.

Upgrade your walls to Mushroom Brick as soon as possible — Grass Plank walls can be broken by medium-tier bugs like Stinkbugs during a raid, but Mushroom Brick holds up significantly better.

Resource regrowth through your base (v0.4.2+): Resources including Plant Fiber, Weed Stems, and Mushroom Chunks now regrow through player-built floor structures over time. Place floors in your gathering areas and resources will eventually respawn on them, reducing the need to range far from your base for common building materials. The Omni-Tool one-hits any resource that regrew through a player-built structure, making collection of regrown resources instant. Acorns, candies, and fast food items do not regrow this way.

04Best Base Locations in Brookhollow Park

Where you place your base matters almost as much as what you build. The right location reduces travel time to key resources and keeps your shelter out of heavy traffic zones for hostile bugs.

Beginner recommendation: The grass ring around the park's central area — flat, well-lit, close to the Ranger Station, and within range of multiple Field Stations. Grass Planks are immediately available, and Red Ants in this zone are farmable for early armor without wandering too far.

Other good early locations:

• Near a large rock outcrop — rocks provide a natural wall on one or two sides, reducing the number of walls you need to build and giving you elevation for visibility.
• Adjacent to a Field Station — lets you scan new materials and access the Science Shop without a long travel loop.
• Close to a Dew source — place near tall grass clusters so your Dew Collector fills reliably each night.
• Away from Stinkbug patrol routes — watch where Stinkbugs roam before placing your base; they are Tier 2 Angry creatures that attack on sight and can ruin an unsecured early base.

Locations to avoid: The park's shaded undergrowth zones (home to Wolf Spiders), near large rocks with Spider webs, or in open exposed areas with no natural cover.

05Hauling Materials — Using the Ant Buggy

Grounded 2's biggest quality-of-life improvement for base builders is the Ant Buggy — a tamed ant mount you unlock through a Ranger Station questline. On foot, your character can carry a limited stack of heavy materials like Grass Planks. Mounted on the Buggy, you can haul a much larger load per trip.

Once you unlock the Buggy, your material-gathering loop changes significantly:

• Mark your chopping spots on the map, ride out and chop a full batch of Grass Planks or Weed Stems, then return in a single trip instead of four.
• The Buggy can also help in combat — mounted attacks keep you mobile against slow-moving bugs like Weevils and Caterpillars.
• Unlocking the Buggy early is worth the quest effort; it directly cuts base-building time in half.
• Park the Buggy at your base entrance — it acts as temporary overflow storage for materials you haven't sorted into chests yet.

06Defending Your Base — Bugs Will Attack

Hostile bugs in Brookhollow Park will occasionally attack player structures, especially if you've been hunting nearby and drawn aggro. A base with no defensive preparation can have its Grass Plank walls chewed through in minutes.

Early defensive options:

• Upgrade to Weed Stem or Mushroom Brick walls — far more durable than Grass Plank; Stinkbugs and Ants can crack Grass Plank walls but struggle with Mushroom Brick.
• Stake Spear Traps (craftable from Pebblets and Plant Fiber) — place outside your perimeter to damage bugs on approach.
• Avoid building in Stinkbug territory — Stinkbugs are one of the most damaging early attackers and have a wide aggro range.
• Build elevated where possible — ground-level Tier 1 insects (Weevils, small Ants) cannot reach a base built even one wall-height above ground on a rock platform.
• Keep a weapon ready at your base chest — a spare Pebblet Spear lets you defend immediately if a bug breaches the perimeter.

Full raids with multiple attackers become more common as you progress deeper into the park's biomes. By that point, you should be using Mushroom Brick walls, Stake Traps, and ideally a second floor as a fallback.
